The Municipality of Kew was granted independence in 1860. It was declared a borough in 1863, a town in 1910 and a city in 1921. In 1994, Kew was amalgamated into the new City of Boroondara.Black and white photographic positive of the front of the (former) Kew Town Hall in Walpole Street between High Street and Malmsbury Street, on the west side where Woolworth's supermarket now stands. The photograph, from August 1970 shows the detailing of the Italianate rendered-brick facade, added in the 1880s when the hall was renovated. The earliest building on the site was the Kew Athenaeum Hall (built 1860) which was purchased by Kew Council in 1865. This is one of eight embroidered panels, completed during the 1988 Australian Bi-Centennial, and carried out under the auspices of City of Kew Council and the Kew Historical Society. Nearly 600 residents, including many children, participated in their production by adding a few or more stitches. A book records their names and the panels upon which they worked. Alfred Deakin was the second Prime Minister of Australia, after having served under Edmund Barton as Attorney-General. He held the office of Prime Minister three times: 1903-4, 1905-8 and 1909-10. He was buried in St Kilda cemetery after a state funeral. Elizabeth Martha Anne (Pattie) Browne married Alfred Deakin in 1882, when she was 19 years old. They had three children, Ivy, Stella and Vera. Pattie Deakin was awarded a CBE (Commander of the British Empire), for her contribution to public life.
