In 1892 Richard Pybus took up a large land grant on Bruny Island, the traditional home of the Nuenone people of south-east Tasmania. Within months of his arrival there were no Nuenone left on the island - they had either died from disease, or been murdered or exiled. Truganini, the last of the Nuenone, died in 1876, having spent her adult life in exile as a dependent of the colonial government. History of Aboriginal occupation of the Melbourne area. Evidence of shell midden refuse associated with their campsites. Evidence of scarred trees and scatters of stone artefacts along major stream systems. It has been established that man was in the Melbourne area 40,000 years ago and that Aboriginal occupation probably continued uninterrupted throughout the extremes of the last ice age, around 20,000 years ago when Port Phillip itself was dry land. John Batman's Treaty, signed on the banks of a creek (Merri Creek?) on 16 June 1835, was an agreement with eight Aboriginal leaders to transfer the land of Port Phillip area to Batman. Governor Bourke disallowed the Treaty the same year.australia, history, john batman
