A collection of nine postcards donated by the Bass Coast Op Shop. Information on the back of No. 276-05. "Koala Bears were first seen by white explorers in the Blue Mountains, 1798. Early colonists from N.S.W. called it a "monkey bear". Koala means in Aboriginal "does not drink" or "no drink". They are slow-moving, tree-climbing, friendly marsupials with thick woolly fur coats, large ears and rubber nose. They live in gum trees and feed upon their leaves. Babies are born every two years, spending nine months in mother's pouch and then on her back for about six months, then leaving its parents and looking for a tree with comfortable branches."Nine coloured postcards of Phillip Island and wildlife. 276-01. Ferdinand Von Mueller came to Australia at the age of 22 arriving 15/12/1847 with his two sisters in Adelaide. He started work as an assistant chemist and in his spare time investigated the local vegetation. In 1852 he moved to Melbourne. From 1853 - 1896 when he died, he was the Victorian Government Botanist and Director of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens. He went on a series of expeditions to parts of Victoria including Mount Buffalo and Wilson's Promontory. He travelled all over Australia in various expiditions. In 1863 he was engaged to Euphemia Henderson for 6 months. Euphemia was a wildflower artist and painted bunches of flowers for Mueller. They allocated specimens at Phillip Island (1863) - one named Nematolepis euphemiae F Muell was named for her. Euphemia's sister was Gergianna who married John David McHaffie of Phillip Island. Euphemia lived with the McHaffies on Phillip Island. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-23: Joseph Richardson came to Australia in 1837 from Liverpool, England. Sarah Arbuckle and her two sisters arrived in 1850. Sarah and Joseph were married when gold was discovered in Victoria. They went to the diggings and had some success. Joseph bought land on Phillip Island when it was open to freehold selection in 1868. The family moved to Phillip Island shortly afterwards, to a house they built on a hill west of Cowes. They called their home "Everton" after a Liverpool suburb. The house still stands in Church Street, known as "Tallawalla". 466-24: The McIlwraith family came from Melton, Victoria to Heath Hill, Rhyll in 1869. They played an important part in the early history of Phillip Island. James was a foundation member of the Trust, John and Alan played their part in the local scene. Capatain Jansson was born in 1862 and came to Australia on the ship "Nosstaljee" in 1886. In 1887 he came to the Island and started work with Captain Lock. He bought land at Rhyll in 1891 and built a house two years later, now known as Jansson's Cottage. Johan married Evelyn Power.. a daughter of Captain Powell. He purchased the ketch "Swan" and later :Stephen" in 1914. They took chicory, seaweed, hay and other farm produce to Melbourne, returning with general cargo. Captain Jansson died in 1928 aged 66 years. 466-45: Evelyn Jansson. Evelyn was the daughter of Captain Powell. She married Johan Jansson on her 18th birthday. She died 1971 aged 95 years. She worked at "Summerland House" and later at the "Isle of Wight Hotel". She took great pride in keeping the altar linen and generally looking after the Anglican Church. Those who knew her said she was a gracious lady with a great sense of humour. Fanny went to a nursing home at Frankston where she resided until she died in February 1980, aged 90. Subjects had a long standing connection with the Mission Visual Record of Mission staff. The Oliver family played a significant and long term role as a family in the leadership, maintenance and publicising the services and role of the Mission from 1930-1960. Articles, a film and regular lectures and canvassing were used to generate funding and awareness of the importance and significance of the Mission to Shipping services for Australia. In the minutes of the 21st meeting of the Victoria Mission to Seamen, held at the Harbour Trust Board Room on Thursday, 8th October 1925 , the Treasurer, Mr Perry reported that he had obtained a fresh lease of land of the Central Institute with an extra piece of land to be used for the future tennis court. The lease started on the 1st of January 1926 and was for 21 years. The tennis court was funded by the Hawtorn branch of Ladies Harbour Lights Guild.The tennis court was a feature of other missions overseas and it seems seamen were asking for one in Melbourne. Reverend Weller succeeded the senior chaplain role after Rev Gurney Goldsmith in the mid 1920s until the end of the decade. He was a keen photographer himself. Freda Kathleen Oxley (1882-1969) pictured here holding a camera took pictures during a voyage to Melbourne on S.S. Persic via Cape Town in 1925. An album of 126 photographs is now held at the National Library of Australia in Canberra., containing views of the Mission to Seamen, Melbourne, with visiting sailors and clergy; family groups, gardens, ships, church picnics, a wedding, some views of Portsea. She seems to have been a childhood friend of Mrs Weller as she was like her born in Windsor, UK. She lived in the chaplaincy for 3 years and became a volunteer; she can be seen in a few photographs of picnics. On Boxing Day 1905, Mr Dudley Le Souef, the director of Melbourne Zoological Gardens, offered the grounds for a picnic. The seamen of the fifteen ships anchored in the harbour were invited. In the centre wearing a white cap is Mr Charles A. Holmes, Honorary Lay Reader of the Mission and behind him is Ethel Godfrey. The following day in the Age we could read: "Yesterday the scene of festivities was the Zoological Gardens, where a number of seamen from fifteen of the ships in the harbor had a sailors' picnic. The director of the gardens, Mr. Dudley Le Souef, kindly, allowed the picnickers the free use of the picnic ground, and also provided them with milk and hot water. A lengthy programme of sports was gone through, and those who were not inclined for athletics spent their time in strolling round examining the zoo logical inmates of the gardens. It was noticeable that the large carnivora were the favorites with the English sailors, whilst foreign seamen were immensely attracted by the kangaroos, wallabies and other Australian marsupials. After tea Mr. Le Souef delivered an interesting illustrated lecture entitled Sea Birds and Their Homes. In carrying out the two days' arrangements Mr. Goldsmith was energetically assisted by voluntary helpers, both ladies and gentlemen, and also received many contributions. R S Corson was a chemist in Koroit in the 1920s. This informally posed photo was taken in front of the old grandstand at Mortlake's recreation (football) oval. It shows 17 troopers in uniform, holding rifles. There are 7 horses, one trooper is mounted. All wear an early version of the slouch hat. An interested group of mainly boys and a few men, including a policeman, watch from the grandstand. Shows early preparation for national defence or conflict, at a local level. Britain had withdrawn its defence forces from the colonies in 1870, so the States had to provide their own. District defence groups were common at this time, meeting regularly for training. This un-named and un-dated photo appears to be a local (Mortlake) unit of the Victorian Mounted Rifles c. 1885,[A local expert on weaponry believes they are from the 'Victorian Rangers' judging from their rifles.] They were precursors of the Light Horse regiments of the Boer and First World Wars. This pine tree (Allepo Pine, Pinus halepensis) a native of the Gallipoli Peninisula (Gelibolu, Turkey), was grown from a cutting obtained from the War Memorial Canberra and planted in the Mortlake Botanic Gardens in 2002. It replaces the original which grew outside the Mortlake RSL Hall which blew down in a storm c.2000. That tree (Allepo brutius)came from 'the original on Gallipoli' and was planted to commemorate 'fallen comrades' in 'the Jubilee year 1965.' However, two soldiers first brought home pine cones direct from that fateful battlefield. . One was Sgt. Keith McDowell of the 24th Btn. His aunt, Mrs. Emma Gray of Grassmere (Vic.) planted the seeds c. 1928 and four seedlings resulted. One was planted in Wattle Park, Melbourne, one at the Shrine of Remembrance, one at the Soldier's Memorial Hall at The Sisters (c.15 km. south of Mortlake) and one at the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. The First World War (or 'Great War') and in particular the battle for the Gallipoli Peninsula is of immense national significance. Lone Pine or Plateau 400 was the scene of a major offensive on August 6th 1915. All the trees on the ridge at this point were cut down but one, which was dominated by the 'Lone Pine'. In three days of fighting more than 2,000 Australians lost their lives and seven Victoria Crosses were won. Two Australian soldiers souvenired pine cones - one was brought back to Victoria (see above). The scene on the postcard depicts the Spanish courtyard (or Cloisters) as a space within the Mission to Seafarers Melbourne. The view to the courtyard is from the Celia Little Room. The Spanish mission design was inspired by a need to make the 1917 Mission complex at Flinders st extension distinctive and easily found.
