Date thought to be 12/12/1958. Tram has destination of City. Can see the Bucks Head Hotel in the background and the full length of Bridge St., with Victoria St. hill as well. W. Gribble & Co. building on the right hand side of the photograph. Although folder dated 23/2/62, the photo is taken before 12/1960, as tram has not been fitted with dash canopy lights, so date taken as for photograph BA1, Reg. No. 2381 - note angle of shadow. hi res scan made and image updated 23/5/2020. Although the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme was first proposed in 1911, construction did not commence until 1938. As part of the push to cut electricity costs and diversify supply, the Victorian Government (circa 1930) initiated the conversion from primarily brown coal supply to hydro – electricity. Field investigations during the 1940’s resulted in a new proposal for a scheme that had more than double the capacity of the 1938 scheme. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme became the largest scheme of its kind in the State Of Victoria and the second largest scheme in Australia. The number of personnel involved in the planning and construction of the scheme increased dramatically. During the late 1940’s, most activity centred around the construction of the West Kiewa Power Station, Rocky Valley Reservoir, McKay Creek Power Station and the Bogong Creek Aqueduct.A common thread across all the larger hydro scheme constructions was the need for workers, both qualified and unqualified who came from around the world seeking a new life for themselves and their families. New accommodation and facilities were required for the army of workers engaged in construction in often remote and wild areas. The SEC had a high demand for timber, and set up the first of a number of sawmills at Bogong Creek in 1939 and set up the first hardwood logging in the headwaters of the Kiewa River. These new ‘towns’ such as Mt Beauty and Bogong, survived, serving the needs of operational personnel and their families, and expanding with growth of new industries. Mount Beauty, and to a lesser extent Bogong, are among these places. Black and white photograph of the Bendigo Hotel located in Bridge street. All nine windows are multi paned. There are two men and a boy standing in the doorway. Opposite the door stand and man and a boy near the cart belonging to Batchelder the Photographer. The man is wearing bowler hat. A corrugated iron fence spans the gap to the next building. The first building in the line is build using corrugated iron for the roof and walls. These retail establishments have a verandah along the footpath. A small group of retail staff are standing around watching the proceedings in the street. Two shops are name; J. Holdsworth and Glass & China warehouse. Booklet - Mulqueen Funeral, 2003
In 1853 Thomas Abell opened a carpentry and undertakers in Bridge St, Bendigo. In 1855 the business moved to a two story building on the corner of Bridge St and Cemetery St. In 1856 the business was bought by George Oakley. His son William operated the business in partnership with Peter Fizelle from 1886 but this partnership was dissolved, rather acrimoniously in 1895 with Oakley opening a rival business. In 1898 Peter's daughter Elizabeth Fizelle married Irishman Michael Mulqueen and from 1900 the business became known as Fizelle and Mulqueen. Peter Fizelle died in 1901 but the company retained his name until 1934 when it becam known as Mulqueen and Sons. Telegram, 15th September 1872
Edward Buckley died at Newbridge in 1878, a resident for 17 years. He established and operated a flour mill (Lancaster Bridge) which was sold two months after his death. A large lot of papers, including this and other telegrams, were apparently found in the ceiling cavity of the Sandy Creek/Tarnagulla Post and Telegraph Office in the later 20th Century, during building works. Donald Clark Collection. Telegram sent from Tarnagulla Telegraph & Post Office. From Edward Buckley, Newbridge to Mr L Fraser, Baker, Sandhust. Message reads 'Please tell my Teamster to bring Malt from Kangaroo and oblige by giving him Four Pounds for freight'. -

Arched Bridge (Monash Bridge) The Rose Series P. 4036 Reproduced in a brochure advertising the "Wattle Valley Estate" 7 minutes from the bridge. The new bridge designed by Sir John Monash over the Diamond Creek near Hurst's original home "Mia Mia" seen in the distance. The Wattle Valley Estate was first advertised in August 1925 as weekend building allotments by the Greater Melbourne Land and Development Company. Advertised from £28.10.0 or £60 per block. In August 1926, 30 picked allotments of 60x150 feet were put up for auction Saturday August 14, 1926 with frontages to Valley View Road and Fawkner Crescent advertised in the “Heart of the Glorious Wattle Country” and “Within 15 Minutes of the Newly Electrified Railway Station”. The Advertiser on August 13, 1926 in an article promoting the auction stated “the estate is regarded as one of the best in the district, and will be sold practically without reserve.” It is noted that an advertisement running in The Argus February 22, 1951 offered the remaining 16 blocks for sale at £12.10.0 or £200 the lot. Shillinglaw Cottage on its original site (present day 895 Main Road) showing old picket fence c.1964. The cottage and land were purchased by the Shire of Eltham as the site for a new shire office building. The cottage was destined for demolition but members of the community concerned at losing one of the areas earlist buildings (built c.1859) initiated a fund-raising campaign to save the cottage. In 1964 the cottage was dis-assembled, all the bricks numbered and reassembled several hundred meters to the south on a site between the Gahan house and the Eltham Railway Trestle Bridge (present-day Panther Place), which bcame known as the Eltham Common.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (now Melbourne Water) was established in 1891. From that time, as part of their work laying water and sewerage connections, they created detailed plans of houses and other buildings in the Melbourne metropolitan area. In 1956 it acquired powers to construct and maintain highways and bridges, protect and improve the foreshores and create and maintain parks within the metropolitan region.
