The Catholic Church in Port Fairy was built 1859-1867 Foundation stone laid in July 1857, money being raised be subscription and a government grant. Charles Hansom was the Architect, Nathaniel Billing Engineer. Born in Ireland 1864, Daniel Mannix entered into the Catholic Church and in 1917, he became the Archbishop of Melbourne. Dedicated to the community and its issues, he was known to have spoken against conscription. Elizabeth Hogan was born at Inglewood. She married Gus Gervasoni of Daylesford. Their only child, John Hogan Gervasoni, weas born at Daylesford on 29 September 1929. Juliana Magan was the seventh child of miner Patrick Magan and his wife Mary (née Flanagan). She was Postmistress at Linton from 1898 until at least 1912. Juliana Magan married Daniel Garvey at St Francis' Catholic Church in Melbourne in 1916. At a press conference in Melbourne, the Australian Council of Church, Australian Catholic Relief, the Baptist World Aid and Relief Committee, the Lutheran World Service and the Seventh Day Adventists joined to speak about a combined appeal to relieve drought victims in Africa. One speaker was Anglican priest the Rev. James Murray, who had recently returned from some of the drought-stricken areas with a film-maker, having been sent on behalf of the appeal. Looking westerly across the Yarra from Westerfolds Park you can see a large and imposing building at the top of the escarpment above the river. This is the Christian Brothers Training Centre at Lower Plenty and known as Amberley. This significant building dates from 1930 when it was the rather grand residence of Oswald Darch. On Sunday 19 December 1954 at 3.30 pm, 52 people attended the inaugural general meeting, which was held in the Catholic church hall at Theodore Street, St Albans. Slovenians at the meeting were enthused at the prospect of developing closer ties and a committee was formed to organise the next dance. This humble beginning laid the groundwork for the establishment of the first Slovenian organisation in Melbourne, Victoria.On 5 December 1954 the first meeting of the club’s preparatory committee was held at 36 Prentice Street, East St Kilda with 26 people in attendance. The group prepared a list of regulations and decided on the name Slovenski klub Melbourne – Slovenian Club Melbourne (SCM). The Sacred Heart Catholic church was opened and dedicated on 7/12/1884, and completed in 1922. Sacred Heart Mission is a medium-sized not-for-profit organisation that grew from the Catholic parish of The Sacred Heart in 1982. It became a separate legal entity in 1984. It addresses homelessness, social exclusion and disadvantage. The Op Shop is in the Church Hall at 87a Grey Street.
