Functional Object - Cap Badge, Stokes & Sons Melbourne, "Motorman", 1905?
Demonstrates the detail of the uniform of tramway/motorman workers.1940 - Cap Badge for a "Motorman". Made from a cast brass item, nickel plated to indicate the position held by the wearer on their cap as part of their uniform. Cast in the form of the handwritten or script word/s and underlined. On the rear, silver soldered on are two brass loops at either of the badge to enable it to be sewn or fitted with clips onto the cap. On the back of the back of the badge in very small letters is the name of the manufacturer - Stokes & Sons / Melbourne. Same manufacturers logo as in Reg Item 1937. Part of the ESCo company and possibly early SEC uniform. ESCo employee number on a special lapel bade - see Reg. item 1952. Not used by the SEC from 1940 - employee number on the cap but early SEC uniforms show them on the collar of the jacked - not known if this uniform adopted. See Reg. Item 1368 for photos of early SEC uniform showing badge on the neck. This uniform serves as an example of the military dress worn by the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineer during the late sixties.The Royal Corps of Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME) is a corps of the Australian Army that has responsibility for the maintenance and recovery of all Army electrical and mechanical equipment. RAEME has members from both the Australian Regular Army and the Army Reserve. Prior to being given the title of 'Royal', the Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (AEME) were raised on 1 December 1942. This uniform was issued to WW2 Veteran "Gerald John Clancy" VX 105938. Discharged 15 April 1946, Rank Cpl. Last unit 29/46 Aust. Inf. Bn.1. Jacket. black wool. Four pockets held shut with silver buttons. Front held shut with four silver buttons. Each collar has a silver number badge - 1779. Each arm has a cloth badge marked "Corps of Commissionaires". Each arm also has a 75mm round badge with a 7 pointed star. It is surmounted with a crown. Inside the 'star' is a blue ring with the words "Service - Loyalty - Integrity". Inside the blue ring is a red dot. On that dot are symbols - Eagle, Anchor and a Rifle. Ob the left forearm is a 25 mm cloth badge with a silver letter "R". 2. Belt, wool, black. 1. Red woollen jacket with white facings and white cuffs. On the collars are a 38Bn NVR badge. On epaulettes are - Brass letter "R". Brass Major's badge, small brass button - motif is Australian Military Forces. The jacket is lined with red cotton. 2. Red woollen vest, cotton backing. Two small pockets, Four small brass buttons - motif is Australian Military Forces - vest lined with white cotton. 3. Black trousers, wool with a red wool stripe on outside seam (4cm wide). Button fly (6 buttons) Pockets are white cotton, waistband lining is blue and white striped cotton. Small piece of leather at bottom of trousers at back. Two side pockets. One back pocket on right.
