The International Committee of the Red Cross was formed in 1862. The effect of this work for the recipients was to bring comfort in its truest sense, for a seemingly trivial gift of a bar of chocolate of a pair of dry socks could bring the most profound relief for a soldier on the Western Front. Medal ribbon used for Olympic medals in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and made from fine 19.5 micron merino wool. It was made by Melbourne company TD Noone Woven Products who created the ribbon on a conventional ribbon loom. The finishing processes were undertaken by Superior Fit Australia, an Albury-based company. The pattern is an adaption of the SOCOG wave design. The ribbon was colour tested against various garment colours to confirm design suitability and colour balance and trialed for wearer comfort as it needed to be soft against the skin when carrying a medal. Durability was important as an Olympic medal is a lifelong keepsake. The Melbourne Argus on the following Day reported on the event: "MILITARY CONCERT. A sequel to the military sports gathering recently held on the Melbourne Cricket ground was provided last night at the Town Hall in the shape of a military concert, at which the prizes won at the sports were distributed. The proceeds of both fixtures will go to further the Y.M.C.A.'s work of providing winter comforts for troops on active service. Additional aid to the fund will be forthcoming from the sale of the handsome souvenir programmes the cover ol which is a replica of the A.N.A. roll of honour, and depicts the landing on Gallipoli. The charge made was an indefinite I one, with an irreducible minimum of six-pence." According to the Australian War Memorial, "The Red Cross maintained a policy of ensuring that comfort and entertainment for the wounded in hospital was onging and stated in its Gazette of December 1917 'Wherever they are, our boys will have a reminder on Christmas Day that the thoughts and sympathy of their people in far-off Australia are with them.' The boxes were usually packed in Australia and contained 'a pipe, tobacco, cigarettes, chocolate, playing cards, match-box, handkerchief and an attractive card, Australian in nature, conveying greetings from the Society.' (Gazette no 7, January 1918)." This particular example dates to 1921, after the war had ended. The extensive fashion and design collection of the Kew Historical Society has been assembled over a number of decades. One subsection of this collection is shoes, designed and manufactured for Australian women by Australian and European designers. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. Keighley War Hospital at Morton Banks was originally The Morton Banks Fever Hospital and after local funds were raised, extra wards were built to turn it into a War Hospital. It opened in time to take some of the first casualties from the Battle of the Somme in July 1916 and continued until the end of the war. The War Hospital Register archived at Keighley Library contains 13,214 names of servicemen who were treated there. It also contains the names of German prisoners of war who were being held locally and required treatment from time to time, notably from the influenza epidemic. Morton Banks had 746 beds. The book records the details of the hospital between 1916-19 including staff, hospital layout and departments, the Auxiliary Hospitals, Discipline, Recreation, Education, Comforts Committee and Affiliated Associations.Document of Military Hospital in Keighley, U.K. during WW1. From the beginning of World War 1 in August, 1914, until it ended in November, 1918, teachers from across Victoria enlisted for the Australian Imperial Force and embarked for overseas. Anzac, the Sinai Desert, the vast fields of France, and in Palestine the Education Department soldier-teachers toiled manfully thoughout. Of the 752 enlistments 724 were teachers, two were School Medical Officers, one was a School Nurse, one an Inspector of Schools, while the remaining 24 belonged to the clerical division employed by the Education Department. 146 died. But it was not only teachers who contributed to the war effort. Children and parents gave 400,000 articles of comfort sent abroad, contributed as a rough estimate 460 tons of supplies to hospitals at home, made contributions of £50,000 to The Young Workers' Patriotic Guild, and £217,419 for the war savings effort in the schools, and £422, 470 in general school subscriptions.Hardcover book, bound with brown cloth cover and gold embossed title containing 306 pages, black and white photographs and illustrations and text. This building was constructed in 1901 by surgeon Dr. William Cussen, a surgeon. His name is still visible in the leadlight above the front door. In 1998 Dr Cussens was an Honorary Medical Office with of the Ballarat Orphanage. In July 1920, the building was gifted to the citizens of Ballarat for the ongoing welfare of returned servicemen and women. Sir John Monash officially opened the building as the Ballarat War Memorial Building. In 1942 a voluntary organisation called The Comforts Fund took up residence in the building with the permission of the R.S.L to transform it into a hostel, providing beds, food and support for many service men and women during World War II. It is estimated that by the end of the war in 1945, one million meals had been served. The building was returned to the R.S.L in the later part of 1945. Before that time the Association provided relief for needy pioneers. relief included monthly monetary payments, loads of firewood, medical assistance and distribution of Christmas bosed of groceries to deserving pensioners, and in some cases payment of burial costs. ::a) The dominant purpose of the Association is to give public benevolent relief as a charity, but providing independent living accommodation in our Retirement Village for person in need who are over 65. ::b) To raise funds by membership subscription, commercial and residential rents, donations, gifts and voluntary work, for the purpose of providing direct relief of poverty, distress, misfortune or helplessness. ::c) To maintain the important heritage and ongoing viability of the Old Colonists' Association.
