This was the first police station built in Watgania, and it was probably built during the goldrush era of late19C to early 20C.The photo is of local significance to Watgania and the Ararat district because of its rarity and because of its subject. There is now (in the year 2023) little or nothing left of the township of Watgania, north of Willaura, though there are still several inhabited properties in this area, which shelters close under the eastern face of the Grampians mountains. The figures in the photo add to its significance, since a good deal of information about the goldfields can be gleaned from their manner and their dress.Black and white photograph mounted on cardboard. Tenders for the building of a Savings Bank building, designed by Messrs Reid and Barnes were called in 1872. The winning tender was for 3,800 pounds by Mr Wright. The building was opened 9th June 1873. Until this time the bank had been operating out of temporary offices at the rear of the Beehive Building.Now and then, history in pictures. Memorial Plaque given to the family of Henry Tippett, killed in Action in France 26 July 1916. Henry enlisted when he was 28 years old on the 6 September 1915 in Melbourne. He was born in Carlton and was living at 529 Canning St. Carlton when he enlisted. A small man at 5'.5'' weighing 9 stone. He was allotted to the 15th Refits of the 7th Battalion. He embarked from Melbourne on the 18 June 1916 on the Kinfaune Castle and landed at Alexandria, On the 29 June 1916.he was transported to Marseilles and one moth later was reported Missing in Action on the 28 July 1916, A court of enquiry concluded he was Killed in Action on the 19 July 1916. He had been in France just 20 daysInscribed with the name Henry Tippett. The plaque was presented on the 4 October 1922. His father William could not attend in person and a Donald Tippett was authorised to pick up the plaque by his mother Eliza Tippett. The plaque number is 319981.His mother Eliza Tippett was granted a pension of one pound per fortnight from the 8th November 1916
