John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the district working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. Edward John Price (Ted)(1899-1974) was the third child of Edward Joseph and Annie Price. He lived a very industrious life in the area. When the new CRB road cut through the family land Edward John established a Corn and Produce store on a level area adjoining the new road . Along with his brother Charlie, Ted took up road contracting and formed Grange Road in 1923. They also took up contracts to metal the CRB road between The Gap and Olinda. Edward John married Myra Wilson in 1930. They lived in the first brick home built in the district. Edward Joseph Price was the first settler to take up a lot (Lot 1, Section 1) in the Village Settlement. He built a slab hut and brought up his family in 1896. This photograph shows a newer home built in 1908. It had a section used as a shop and also had a large room built that was to be used for public gatherings. The Lundy-Clarke family were related to the Price family through the marriage of two Ross sisters - Annie Ross to Edward Joseph Price and Helen Ross to Robert Lundy-Clarke. Edward Joseph Price took up Lot 1 in the Village Settlement and Robert Lundy-Clarke was persuaded to take up Lot 2. He felt it would be unproductive. He signed it over to Edward Joseph Price and took his family to New Zealand. After his death in 1911 the family returned to the district. The Lundy-Clarke family were related to the Dunbar family as Caroline Dunbar was a sister to Annie and Helen Ross. Agnes Annie Clarke aged 18 daughter of Robert Lundy-Clarke and Helen nee Ross. Alan Price was the son of Edward John Price and Myra (nee Wilson) Price. He had a brother Edward Joseph 2nd (Teddie). Alan and Teddie were the grandsons of early settlers Edward Joseph and Annie (nee Ross) Price. Alan Price worked at his brother's depot in Ringwood, in charge of mechanical equipment. He rode to and from work on his motorbike. Alan was killed in a motorbike accident on his way home from work in 1971. Alan married Patricia Guerin in 1960. They had five daughters and one son. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Battery Quartermaster Sergeant Harold Bauerle served with the Albury Battery in the 1920s and 1030s. Shortly following Federation the military unit in Albury was redesignated No 4 New South Wales Battery Australian Field Artillery (AFA). It was under the command of Major John Wilkinson, an Albury solicitor and comprised about 100 citizen soldiers, 4 guns and about 40 horses. Training centred on the Albury Drill Hall located in Victoria Street. A reorganisation in 1912 resulted in the Battery being named No 17 Battery AFA. When war broke out in 1914 the Battery then under the command of Major Joseph Shellshear, and Albury doctor, offered its services as a trained artillery battery to the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). The Battery cooled its heels and continued to train till July 1915 when a second division was raised in the AIF and trained artillery was needed. When the call came 150 officers and men of the 17th Battery went into the AIF, many to the 13th Battery with Major Shellshear in command and others to other AIF batteries of the 4th and 5th Artillery Brigades. The 13th Battery was adopted immediately by the townsfolk of Albury as the Albury Battery. The Battery served in France and Belgium and was involved in all the major battles fought by the Australians perhaps most notably at Noreuil where the Battery found itself surrounded but continued to fight till eventually the enemy was driven back. Following the war members of the Battery nominated this battle as their most significant achievement and consequently a newly developed recreational reserve on the Murray River foreshore was named Noreuil Park. In 1919 the Battery resumed training as part of the Citizen Military Forces or Militia. Changes of title were frequent, first 27th Battery, then 60th Battery and finally 40th Battery AFA. Battery commanders included Captain Leslie Colquhoun, an Albury real estate agent, Captain Roy Collings, Albury town clerk and Captain Clifton Mott a newspaper editor. The Depression of the early 1930s almost brought about the closure of the Albury Battery but it survived through the intervention of the mayor, Alderman Alfred Waugh, who made direct representation to the Minister for Defence. When the Second World War erupted in 1939, the Battery was at full strength and a rich source of officers and trained men for the second AIF. Militia training of the few remaining officers and Albury adopted the 2/23rd Infantry Battalion which had been raised at the Showground. Following WWII, CMF soldiering recommenced in the form of an armoured regiment, the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. After nearly a half a century of service in war and peace the Albury Battery has faded and exists now in this collection of objects and images. The Breeden family came to Surrey Hills in 1905, first to Guildford Road, then Middlesex Road where Horrie Breeden lived as a boy. He sometimes used to help with milking at the adjoining Kenneally's dairy in Highfield Road. Sometimes he and his brother drove the cows from there to Schneider's property near Florence Road on the way to Surrey Hills Primary School. The cows would graze here until the boys took them back after school. At other times he would deliver milk from the Croydon Road dairy (Isherwood's or Bovill's) to St Joseph's Boys Home before school. Horrie became an apprentice in woodwork / carpentry at Vine's timber yard before serving in World War 1. Horrie's father died in 1919 and in the same year he bought 3 cows and established his own dairy on his mother's property on the corner of Goodwood Street and Boisdale Road. In the 1920s Horrie built the first house in Goodwood Street. He went on to build others in the street including his own at No 7 Goodwood Street. He did all the joinery and internal fittings for this. Milk bottles such as this one that include the name of the producer or retailer are historically significant as they represent the period in Surrey Hills' history before milk production was centralised. This note to the local milkman was associated with the milk bottle from the Wattle Park Dairy, which was purchased by Robin Kelly from a home in Surrey Hills in the 1970's or 1980's. This belonged to Sue Slonek, who at the time was Secretary of the Surrey Hills Historical Society and an active volunteer working with the collection. She died unexpectedly and this and a book were formally donated to the collection by her son Alex. Wilfred Shipman Bishop was Sue's father. As a young man he grew up at 21 Grovedale Road, Surrey Hills. His father Frederick James Joseph Bishop was a bookbinder. Wilfred enlisted in the AIF in WW2 (V46365). He married Lucy Isobell Legge in 1943. They had 4 children - Sue and 3 boys. 1st Mont Albert Scouts meet in the scout hall at Surrey Park, where they share facilities with 9th Box Hill Scouts.A Black and white photo within a brown matt board of 25 boys and young men dressing in scout uniform. Joseph Starkie was the Chairman of the Sunbury Waterworks Trust from 1905 to 1913. During that time he was instrumental in getting a permanent water supply installed for the town of Sunbury. After his death in April 1913, the townspeople erected a memorial which stood at the intersection of Brook and Stawell Street. It was unveiled on 26 January 1915 by Terence O'Brien. The original memorial included a drinking fountain and horse trough. As traffic increased within the town, the centre section of the fountain, without the horse trough, was resited in a reserve opposite the Memorial Hall. The photograph shows the monument on its original site. It was blessed and opened by Archbishop Carr on 20th November of that year. In January 1905, the Sisters of St Joseph took charge of the school. Archbishop Mannix opened and blessed the new brick school on 10th November 1918. From 1941-1972, Fr Tim Fitzpatrick was parish priest and head of the school. He is the priest on the LHS of this large school photo. The property is identified as 'Strathmore', the home of Joseph Sutton Crow and his wife Winifred (Jessie) Temby, whom he married in 1910. Joseph Sutton Crow: (1881-1969) - Joseph Sutton Crow gained his Diploma of Music from the Marshall Hall Conservatorium, the forerunner to the Melbourne University Conservatorium, in 1907. He taught both piano and organ and was organist and choirmaster in several churches. However it was as a fine administrator that Sutton Crow made a significant contribution to music in Melbourne. From 1910-1920 he was Secretary and Librarian of the Music Department at the University of Melbourne and from 1920 was the Secretary and Assistant Director of the Conservatorium of Music. From 1919 he was also Secretary of the Australian Music Examinations Board. He married lyric soprano, Jessie Temby and moved to ‘Strathmore’, 75 Victoria Crescent, Mont Albert in 1924 and lived there until 1952. In c1926 he was one of those behind establishing the public appeal to raise a million shillings to go towards the establishment of a permanent Symphony Orchestra. The appeal successfully raised both £4000 and the profile of orchestral music in Melbourne. The result was the Melbourne University Symphony Orchestra, which later became the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and from 1926-1939 he was its manager. Close local musical contemporaries were violinist Stanislau de Tarczynski and pianist Edward Goll, both of whom lived in Mont Albert.
