It was fully restored by an enthusiastic local lady, It was presented to the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum on 20 April 2022. The Museum is now known as the Bendigo Military Museum. Mervyn Clive Townsend was born in Bairnsdale on 5.2.1917 to Edward and Muriel Townsend. The family moved to Bendigo in 1930. His father was a teacher at the Bendigo High School. Mervyn enlisted in the RAN on 14.10.1940 age 23 years for temporary service and Commissioned at HMAS Cerberus. He was posted as Surgeon Lieutenant (Dental) on the HMAS Sydney on 5.4.1941. He was later KIA on 19.11.1941 along with the whole crew of 645 during a battle with the German Cruiser (Raider) Kormoran. George Frederick Pierce No 2839 enlisted in the AIF on 29.6.15 in 9th reinforcements 6th Batt age 20 years. Embark for Egypt 9.10.15, embark for France 2.4.16, awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1917, KIA 4.10.17, no known grave. The “DCM” award. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He took command of his Lewis Gun Section in an attack and bombed an enemy Machine Gun post single handed, capturing the gun. Later he carried ammunition to the front line through heavy barrages. Horace Selleck served in the Citizens Military Forces for many years prior to enlisting in the 38th Batt AIF as a Captain on 4.5.16. He embarked with the 38th Batt in June 1916 as part of D Coy. WIA on 1.2.17 with Deafness from Shelling. WIA 2nd occasion 4.10.17 with multiple GSW's to the arms and wrist. He was KIA on 20.7.18 at night by a sniper while visiting night posts in Vaire Wood. Thomas William Francis No 2584. Enlisted on 7.7.1915 in 4th reinforcements 29th Batt AIF age 25 years 6 months. Embarked for Eygpt 14.3.16, embark for France 16.6.1916, reported missing 19/20.7.1916, listed as KIA 20.7.16 (Fromelles) no known grave. The photo is one of a number that originally hung in the "Gallery of Honour" foyer of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Pall Mall Bendigo now the Bendigo Military Museum. In 2008 a mass grave was found with 250 remains in. On 12.4.2013 it was announced that the remains of Thomas Francis had been identified. Published in the Bendigonian 18th May 1916. J.H. McCOLL believed to be James Hiers McCOLL father of Lieut. Hugh McCOLL, C Coy 38th Battalion AIF. Pre war Hugh McColl spent 11 years in the junior and senior cadets and then 1 year as a Commissioned Officer in the local 67th Batt. He enlisted in the AIF with the rank of 2nd Lieut on 1.3.1916 aged 27 years 4 months. Embarked for England on 20.6.1916 and then France in November 1916. WIA on 12.10.1917 with concussion, hospital 7.4.1918 with sprained ankle, KIA by machine gun fire on 12.8.1918 during an advance near Proyart.
