Functional object - ESCO Tram Destination Symbol, Circa 1913
Tramcar Destination Sign used by the Electric Supply Company of Victoria on the Ballarat Electric Trams. The ESCo operated the Ballarat electric trams from 1905 to 1934. Tramcar destination symbols originated in a time when a large part of the population was illiterate. The symbols were displayed on the front of the tram enabling the public to easily identify a tram's destination. The destination signs had a painted circle in the middle, the colour indicated the tram's destination. This particular sign has a yellow circle indicating the destination was Lydiard Street North. See Reg No. 5488.Yields information about how the public related to the trams and their destinations.Square sheet of steel, painted dark green and with a painted yellow circle 125mm in diameter in the middle. Has two circular holes near one side with an extended slot for fastening over hooks or screw heads. Has at least two layers paint with slightly different shades; all layers of paint are flaking. Functional object - Conductors Bell, Conductors Bell Tramcar No. 34
The bell from the final tram, Tram No. 34, to run on Lydiard Street North in 1971. Demonstrates a conductors communication or signal bell made for use on tramcars. A reminder of the network of trams that existed in Ballarat. Brass Conductor Communication Bell consisting of cast frame, bell pull part, one nut to secure the bell to the frame and two rivets securing for the bell pull part. Displayed in wooden frame with brass plaque. Stamped at one end with "48" "1". Photo of the installation of an electric arc type street lamp in Lydiard St North, near the Provincial Hotel Ballarat. The tower wagon is drawn by a single horse. Two boys standing alongside while two men are on the top of the wagon, a man on the top of the ladder is positioning a lifting beam while two men on the ground hold the rope for this beam. On the side of the wagon is possibly an extension that could be lifted onto the top of the tower itself to give a greater working height. The buildings between Mair St and the railway station on the west side of Lydiard St North remain in position. Image of the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard Streets looking north towards Lydiard St. Photograph shows a horse drawn tram turning from Sturt into Lydiard St North, while another crosses Lydiard St, heading west along the north side of the street. Photo shows the Post Office, the Robert Burns statue, and the large arc lamp in the middle of the intersection. Two copies held.
