Gertrude Perry was born in California Gully in 1917. Her singing skills were recognized at an early age. She later sang with local choirs and sang on radio. She was involved with the Bendigo Operatic Society for many years. Gertrude began her working life in sales. After studying book keeping she worked at the Bendigo Ordnance Factory during WW2 and then worked for local solicitors and accountants. Stuart Hats commenced manufacturing hats in about 1948 and closed their factory in Orbost around 1953 probably because of the high transport costs. The company's head factory was in Melbourne. The hats made in Orbost were sold all over Australia as well as in Melbourne at Myers and David Jones. Orme Andrews Ladies' Wear was the only store in Orbost to stock the locally produced Stuart Hats. The building became first a Dry Cleaners and then a private home.Stuart Hats was a significant manufacturing business in Orbost in the 1950's employing nearly 20 local people.A woven straw hat with a wide brim. Thomas Buzza (1833-1904) was a Cornish born miner who came to Bendigo in 1853. He bought the BAckCreek sawmill (1861-1865). He had several other sawmilling enterprises and later operated a hay and corn produce store. He also built and operated paddle-steamers in the Murray Darling system. He left Myers Flat in 1893 and died in Goolwa, SA in 1904. He had married Emily Rainsdon (1852-1926) in 1867.Printed family history spiral bound with perspex cover. Contents page - no index. In 1949 an architect produced this plan to detail the addition of a bedroom for the nursing staff, who looked after children in the Blind Babies nursery.
