This photograph shows men cutting marble slabs at Buchan on James Cameron's property. The marble was used in the Shrine of REmembrance in Melbourne. The slabs in the photograph were about 8.5 metres long. The Shrine of Remembrance was created to meet the needs of a grieving community after the extensive loss of lives in the First World War (1914 –18). Sixteen dark Ionic columns were made of .Buchan marble In the early 1900s black marble was being mined in the Bruthen district. Some was used for the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne and also Australia House in London. 900 tonnes were shipped to London to be included in the construction of Australia House. Marble quarrying has been a significant part of the history of Buchan in East Gippsland. Bogong Village, which was known as “The Junction”, is well recorded. The first tent camp was at the junction of Pretty Valley and Rocky Valley streams in the early 40’s. Further downstream were the sawmill, stables and blacksmith’s forge. Horses were the main mode of transport in the early days. The road to Bogong had reached the lookout spur just beyond Roper’s Spur track just before the 1939 fires. The early forties saw rapid growth of the village, with single and married men’s quarters, workshops, mess huts and administrative offices. The facilities necessary for communal living were quickly in place- a post office, police station, co-op store, medical centre, community hall/theatre, tennis courts and school. Much of the temporary accommodation that housed groups such as the Albion Quarrying Company were in the area now under water.Pictorial history of the early years of Bogong Village including one photo taken following the devastating fires of 1939. This slate comes from the Glasgow Estate (Ellen Isabel Glasgow died in Warrnambool in 1971). It is presumed it was used by members of the Glasgow family. Slates such as this were used by all school children in Victoria (and presumably elsewhere) in the infant and younger age classes from the early days of the State until the early 1940s. It had the advantage of the work being able to be easily erased so that other work could be written. A slate pencil was used to write on this board.This is significant firstly as an example of past educational tools used by small children and so has important social significance as every school child of past generations would have used a slate. It is also important as it belonged to the Glasgow family. John Glasgow (c.1847-1925), at his property, Blackwood Hill, Wangoom, was a prominent cheese maker in the late 19th century and was one of the first shareholders and a member of the first Board of Directors of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford.
