Report: Auditor-General, The Auditor-General, Audit Report No 3, 1990-91, Department of Defence, Australia's Army Reserve, 24/8/1990 (exact)
"The report highlights significant deficiencies in achieving the major objectives for the ARes that were set out in the Defence White Paper. It also identifies inadequacies in the organisation of the ARes, shortfalls in the level of resources required to maintain its effectiveness. It indicates a need for a major review of the structure and disposition of ARes units and asset holding. The ANAO has developed estimates of the cost of the ARes and these estimates indicate that the cost of training and supporting an ARes member for each day of service are substantially higher than for a ARA soldier. The report points to difficulties in recruitment and retention and the need to examine the role of women in the ARes. Training was not closely focused on the roles and objectives of the ARes and the subsequent evaluation of training activities could be improved."ISBN 0 644 13030 X army reserve, audit reports, auditor general, australian national audit office, defence reviews -

Book, Work of the English Puritan Divines - M Henry, Early 1840s
This book was given in 1847 to E. Callender by an unknown person (‘C.E –‘). There is a reference in the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper to an Adam Callander, a Port Fairy baker whose wife Alice committed suicide in 1870 and, more importantly, a reference to a Miss Callender arriving as a ship passenger to Warrnambool in July 1854. There is a record of Eliza Callender marrying Peter McFarlane in 1858. The book may have been a New Years’ Day present or a birthday present or a presentation to someone leaving England to migrate to Australia. This book is kept because of its inscription and its early date (1847 – some months before Warrnambool was founded). Further research may reveal the extent of the book’s significance. This is hard cover book of 320 pages. The cover is dark brown with embossed scrolls on the front cover and gold lettering on the spine. The book has eight chapters, including a biography of the author, Matthew Henry, and two black and white sketches. On the first page is the stamp of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. The cover is slightly stained.‘To E. Callender with kind love from C.E- (the last letter is not clear – it could be an ‘E’ or a ‘D’ or merely a decorative flourish) ‘1st January 1847’ e. callender, warrnambool, work of the english puritans divine -

The Cyril Kett Optometry Museum
Equipment - Ophthalmoscope, unknown, Liebreich ophthalmoscope, cased, 1875 (estimated); late 19th century
Richard Liebreich of Germany invented his design of ophthalmoscope in 1855. This example is complete in its case with Coccius lenses and condensing lenses. Early ophthalmoscopes required an external source of illumination, eg lamp or candle, and light was reflected into the eye to be examined by the mirror on the ophthalmoscope. The earliest versions of the Liebreich ophthalmoscope used a polished metal surface to reflect light; glass mirrors were introduced in 1870. A condensing lens was held in front of the patient to view the image. A Coccius lens could be clipped into the holder to counter ametropia of user or subject. This Liebreich ophthalmoscope is significant for the collection as it is the only complete example of the three held in the collection.Cased Liebreich ophthalmoscope with 5 small coccius glass lenses and 2 glass condensing lenses. Non-illuminated ophthalmoscope has concave mirror in round head with central sight hole.Hinged coccius clip attached to hold lenses. Black metal head, silver coloured mount and black turned timber handle. Case has black leather outer lining and purple velvet and satin inner linings. Case hinged with snap closure. On front of case:"LIEBREICH'S OPHTHALMOSCOPE" 4 of 5 Coccius lenses engraved with powers: "8-", "12-", "-01", "+01"ophthalmoscope, optometry, ophthalmology, liebreich, coccius, lenses, eye examination, fundus, funduscopy, non illuminated, instrument, eye doctor, liebreich ophthalmoscope -
