Club Terrace, situated in East Gippsland, is important as a timber milling centre. The name probably derived from the ‘Ace of Clubs’ mine which operated for a time there and which took its name from the ‘Ace of Clubs’ cattle brand of still earlier days. The school first opened on 1st of February 1900, the teacher being Samuel Beaver. In 1960 the number of children enrolled grew too great for the little one-room school that had served so well. A modern type school of two rooms, built on a new site away from the mills, was occupied at the beginning of the 1961 school year when R. Lawry and his wife were the teachers. Later in the same year the school was officially opened by the DI Cyril Bowden. Also present were B. Evans, MLA, B. May, MLC and several Councillors from Orbost Shire. This school record is of immediate interest and value to the pupils and staff who have learned and taught in the Club Terrace State State School. The record also has a much wider significance, to the community in which the school is situated, as a record and research tool.A black / white photograph of a group of students and their male teacher standing outside a wooden building. corsage, 1930's -1950's
A corsage is a small bouquet of flowers worn on a woman's dress or worn around her wrist to a formal occasion, traditionally purchased by the woman's date. A corsage originally referred to the bodice of a woman's dress. Since a bouquet of flowers was often worn in the center of the bodice, the flowers took on the name "corsage." This corsage was worn by Marjorie Burton. It was probably pinned on a dress to decorate it and may have been made by Marjorie or her mother. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from a middle-class, working, church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who made many of Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. document, Celebration of the Orbost Signatures of the 1891 Women's Suffragette Petition, 2009
In 1891, Premier James Munro said he would introduce a bill into parliament for women's suffrage if it were demonstrated that ordinary women wanted this right. The Victorian Woman's Temperance Union and the Victorian Women's Suffrage Society took up the challenge, joining forces to organise a petition. Embarking on a door knocking campaign across Victoria they collected about 30,000 signatures in six weeks. The 'Monster Petition' is housed at the Public Records Office Victoria where a purpose-built perspex case protects the 260 metres of signed pages glued to sewn swathes of calico. (ref. Creative Victoria). In 2008 the petition was a centrepiece of the centenary celebrations of women's suffrage. This document was prepared for that centenary celebration. The Women's Suffrage Petition (1891) reflects the dedicated work of those women, who went from door to door across Victoria to collect the signatures. gramophone record, Ave Maria / Ora Pro Nobis, 1930's-1940's
Zonophone was a record label founded in 1899 in Camden, New Jersey, by Frank Seaman. The Zonophone name was not that of the company, but was applied to the records and machines sold by Seaman from 1899–1900 to 1903. In the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, the Gramophone Company continued to use the Zonophone label until 1931. 'Zonophone' indicates the British label rather than Zon - O- Phone, the earlier American label. Madame Deering was Eleanor Jones-Hudson. Eleanor Jones-Hudson (1874-1946) was a Welsh soprano and wife of the flautist Eli Hudson. She recorded extensively for the Gramophone Company, in excerpts from opera, operetta, oratorio, ballads and songs. She was sometimes credited as Alvena Yarrow and as Madame Deering. The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction until late in the 20th century, replacing the phonograph cylinder record—with which it had co-existed from the late 1880's through to the 1920's. Records retained the largest market share even when new formats such as compact cassette were mass-marketed.. (ref Wikipedia) This item is an example of an item once commonly found in homes. By the late 1980s until 1991, digital media, in the form of the compact disc, gradually replaced the vinyl record.A black gramophone record with a blue and gold label - Zonophone. book, East Gippsland's ANZACS a tribute to those who served in World War 1, 2016
This book was produced as a project for the 1915 ANZAC centenary. The book became too unwieldy and was then divided into written information and a CD with the details of each man - name; rank; service number and unit. Almost 2500 names have been traced. For current Australians, the Anzac Centenary is one of the most significant commemorations to take place during their lifetime. It was a time to contemplate the legacy of those who served in World war 1 and those who never returned to their families or friends. This book records that time and especially honours those from East Gippsland.A paper back book, titled "East Gippsland's ANZACS a tribute to those who served in World War 1".
