Functional object - Haeusler Collection Mid-Century 'Miranda's Dream Cigarettes' Tobacco Tin, Dodo Designs
The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This tobacco tin is one of the many objects in the Haeusler Collection that provides insight into life in early to mid-twentieth century Wodonga, and Australia more broadly. Smoking in the first half of the twentieth century was incredibly common in Australia and other western countries. In 1945, more than three out of every four men and one in every four women were regular smokers. While rates of smoking decreased over the next two decades due to observations and research regarding the links between smoking and illness, an increase in tobacco use was documented after the advent of television as people were bombarded with advertisements for cigarettes. These advertisements, much like the image on the Haeusler Collection 'Miranda's Dream Cigarettes' Tobacco Tin, depicted smoking as sophisticated and glamorous, distracting consumers from the serious health risks associated with smoking. Orientalist depictions of Middle East were common in tobacco advertising in the West in the first half of the twentieth century, an attempt to associate cigarettes with the supposed sensuality and mystery of the Orient. There have been significant changes in both legislation and popular perceptions of smoking in Australian society since the manufacture and consumption of 'Miranda's Dream Cigarettes'. In 1992 the Tobacco Advertising Prohibition Act was introduced, making it illegal in Australia to publish or broadcast messages that encourage people to start or continue smoking. In 2011 the Australian government also introduced plain packaging laws to reduce the appeal and promotion of tobacco products, and make health warnings more effective. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history. A tobacco tin with a coloured illustration of a woman in stylish 1920s-1930s dress sitting in an armchair smoking a cigarette, while watching an Orientalist scene featuring a belly dancer and a snake charmer wearing a turban. Branding on the lid of tin: "Miranda's Dream Cigarettes"cigarettes, tobacco, smoking, cigarette tin, haeusler, haeusler collection, wodonga -

Booklet, Love sweetens truth, 1880s
This book was a prize awarded to Miss Middleton, a pupil at Ormiston House College, East Melbourne in 1887. The Principals of the school were the Misses Singleton and their father, Dr John Singleton was a practising doctor in Warrnambool from 1860 to 1865. He had an important influence on Warrnambool, establishing several Total Abstinence Societies and campaigning for improved health conditions for pastoral workers in the district and the aborigines at Framlingham. In Melbourne Dr Singleton and his wife worked tirelessly for the underprivileged. He established many institutions for the less fortunate, including the Prisoners’ Aid Society, the Children’s Hospital, lending libraries, cottages for widows, shelters for homeless men and women, a society for the protection of animals and the Collingwood Free Medical Dispensary. He died in 1891 at Ormiston House, his daughters’ school and home. It is not known which of the Singleton daughters ran the school and no information has been found on Miss Middleton. This book is of considerable interest as it has a close connection to Dr John Singleton, important not only in the social history of Melbourne but also in the history of Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 160 pages with 16 pages at the back of the book of advertisements for other books published by the Religious Tract Society. The cover is brown with a sketch of a young man and lettering in gold and an ornamental floral pattern on the front cover. The gold lettering and the ornamental floral pattern are also on the spine. The book has 13 chapters with ornamental scrolls and initials at the beginning and end of each chapter. There are also some full page black and white sketches in the book, with the one at the front of the book covered by a piece of tissue paper. The book plate at the front of the book is white with a gold border pasted onto the page and handwritten details have been added in black ink. The book is a little scuffed at the edges of the cover. ‘Ormiston House College, East Melbourne, Principals, The Misses Singleton, Prize for Writing and Maps in Upper Third Class Awarded to Miss Middleton, Christmas 1887.’ dr john singleton, ormiston house, history of warrnambool -

Booklet, Victorian Almanacs, 1860s
These Victorian Almanacs were published from 1859 to 1916. They contained information of interest to all Victorians, especially historians, businessmen, farmers and gardeners and must have sold many copies in Warrnambool, particularly before the local Warrnambool Standard Almanacs began publication in 1875. These booklets are of interest as examples of 19th century almanacs published in Victoria. They are also somewhat similar to the Almanacs published annually by the Warrnambool Standard newspaper from 1875 to 1930. The 1869 Almanac is of particular interest as it has on the front cover the printed name of James Hider, stationer and bookseller of Warrnambool. James Hider had been a carpenter, a land agent and a rate collector before opening a shop in Timor Street, selling books and stationery and operating a Circulating Library. In 1865 Hider set up as a photographer and was still operating this business in 1878. He was active in community organizations, including the Mechanics Institute, the Fire Brigade, the National School, the Musical Group and the Benevolent Society. He was also a Councillor and a Mayor in the 1860s. It is interesting to note that his name does not appear to have been been added to the 1869 Almanac cover but is part of the original printing. These are two soft cover booklets of 60 pages each. The back covers of both are missing and the 1868 booklet has some back pages missing. The 1868 Almanac has a black and white cover with ornamental scrolls and the 1869 booklet has a red, green black and cream cover with an ornamental border and images of flora and fauna. The 1869 Almanac cover has a Coat of Arms with Advance Australia printed at the bottom of it. The 1869 Almanac also has a map of Victoria as an insert. Both almanacs contain an historical calendar, Victorian Parliamentary information, data on Victorian cities, postal regulations, farmers’ and gardeners’ guides etc. Both contain advertisements relevant to Melbourne. Both have been bound with string. victorian almanacs, annual journals, james hider, bookseller and stationer,, warrnambool. -

Australian Nursing Federation ratios campaign badge, 2003
Button distributed to and worn by Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) members and staff as part of a 2003-2004 campaign to secure minimum nurse staffing in the public healthcare sector. The '5-4-20' denotes a minimum of five nurses for twenty patients in a general medical or surgical ward. During this period, staffing ratios were secured as part of bargaining negotiations between unions and employer groups. After decades of campaigning from the ANF/ANMF, ratios were legislated for the public sector in Victoria with the passing of the Safe Patient Care (Nurse to Patient and Midwife to Patient) Bill in 2015. This campaign was featured in ANF Victorian Branch newsletters from late 2003 to early 2004. Entitled the '5-4-20 campaign', it was officially launched on 19 November 2003. Advertisements and shirts from the time featured the slogan, '5 nurses for 20 patients. Nothing less!' along with the ANF logo and illustrations by The Age cartoonist Ron Tandberg. The campaign was to promote the role of minimum nurse to patient ratios in ensuring patient safety and encouraging nurse recruitment and retention.Circular yellow, blue and red badge. Book, The Complete Etiquette for Gentleman, c.1890
This book has the sub-title: ‘A Complete Guide to the Table, the Toilette and the Ball Room with hints on Courtship, Music and Manners’. It was sold in Warrnambool at the book shop of C. & R. Lavery. They were early Warrnambool settlers and opened their bookselling and newsagent business in 1877. The shop was in the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street. This book is of interest as an example of the type of book produced in the late 19th century as an instructional manual for men in the area of manners and etiquette. It is also of interest because it was sold by a local bookstore in Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 184 pages. The cover is green with black lines on the cover edges and the titles printed in black lettering. The book has several pages at the front and the back giving information on other books produced by the same publisher (Ward, Lock, Bowden & Co.). These advertisements are accompanied by black and white illustrations. The book has an introduction and 24 sections on etiquette for men for various places and occasions. Each section starts with an ornamental first letter in black and white. The book cover has partly come apart from the pages and the cover is somewhat stained and very faded on the spine. Several of the pages at the back are torn and stained with some of the text missing. There is a label with the sellers’ information pasted on to the back of the front cover. ‘C. & R. Joseph Jordan, born in England, took up photography whilst on military service in India. In 1890 he set up as a professional photographer in Warrnambool and became well-known for his family portraits and official photographs of civic dignitaries in the town. He retired in 1916 and the business was continued by his son, Arthur. The Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition was held over three months in 1896-7 in the civic buildings with some temporary buildings added. 70,000 people were said to have attended over that time with concerts, operas, art and sporting competitions and many exhibits. Joseph Jordan had the exclusive rights to publish a souvenir booklet. These booklets are of prime importance because:- 1. They are invaluable pictorial records of Warrnambool and district in the late 1890s. 2. They contain valuable advertisements which give us pictorial representations and other information on businesses in Warrnambool in the late 1890s. 3. Three of them relate directly to the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition and contain an article dealing with the Exhibition. 4. They contain a written description of Warrnambool in the late 1890s. 5. They show the work of one of our most important photographers, Joseph Jordan and probably also the work of his son, Arthur. These booklets have been published in 1896 by the Warrnambool photographer, Joseph Jordan and contain 15 pages of black and white photographs of Warrnambool and district, many advertisements for local and Melbourne business and an article of the town of Warrnambool. Three of the booklets also contain information on the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition. Booklet One and Two – dark red hard cover with the title in gold and ornamental scroll work. The cover printing of Booklet Two is almost obliterated. The books are glued and reinforced with string. Booklets Three, Four and Five – soft covers in beige tonings with the title in black print and featuring ornamental scroll work with a sketch of a bird. The covers have much foxing. The booklets are bound with black and brown tape. Booklet One: ‘Ivy Morden’ Booklet Two; ‘Mr Peter Gibbons’ joseph jordan, warrnambool industrial and art exhibition -
