The Greatorex company came to Wodonga in August 1945 under the Cain Government decentralisation policy. It initially had premises in Beechworth Road, around the corner from Tallangatta Road (now Thomas Mitchell Drive). Due to expansion they later relocated to the corner of Tallangatta Road and Anne Street Wodonga in 1952. Greatorex had its main manufacturing plant in Melbourne, Victoria. At their peak Greatorex Pty Ltd. which also operated as Supreme Surgical Hosiery Co., manufactured brassieres, swimsuits, elastic thread, surgical hosiery and employed 90 staff in Wodonga. The company which was operated by Thomas Greatorex with Mr M. P. Brain as Manager, also owned Fulflex Yarns Pty. Ltd. Fulflex produced elastic yarns to be used in the manufacture of garments at Supreme Surgical Hosiery. In 1960, due to the increasing cost of freight charges for moving raw materials and manufactured goods to and from Melbourne, the company was forced to close down. Plant and machinery valued at over £30,000 was moved to Melbourne. Some personnel were given the opportunity to also transfer to the parent company. A photo of Anzac Day in London in 1956 from a Comradeship photo album. It identifies Sir Thomas White at the East door of Westminster Abbey after the service. The caption says Sir Thomas White was the 3rd President of Melbourne Legacy. He had also been the Australian High Commissioner in Britain until 1956, so he was soon to return to Australia. An account of the wartime experiences of Legatee Thomas White who served a term as President in 1925. This is the story of the capture and escape of Captain Thomas White, Australian Flying Corps on the Baghdad Road, Mesopotamia (Iraq), 13/11/1915. Captain White had been ordered to cut the telegraph wires behind the Turkish Lines along with his observer Captain F. Yeats-Brown from the 17th Indian Cavalry. Although they achieved their objective, the Maurice-Farman Longhorn aeroplane was damaged on landing and could not be repaired and were subsequently captured by the Arabs and local Gendarmerie. After the Arabs had beaten them up they were taken to Baghdad, escorted by the Turks and imprisoned. On 26 July 1918 Captain White escaped with Captain AJ Bott of the Royal Air Force. After making their way by sea (under very difficult circumstances) they arrived and went ashore at Odessa on the Black Sea. Odessa at the time was occupied by Austria and German troops and the Bolsheviks (the Russian revolution was under way). On 3 November 1918 they boarded a ship for Varna where Brigadier-General Ross met them, motored to Salonika, arriving 10/11/1918, then subsequently sent to Cairo. Tommy White became the third President of Melbourne Legacy in 1925-26 (Melbourne Legacy Bulletin 19/7/1990). He also went on to be the Australian High Commissioner in Britain until 1956. A menu card from a dinner dance held in 1962. Charity balls were held with the proceeds from the evening going to aid Melbourne Legacy. The ball was held under the patronage of 'His Excellency the Administrator of the Commonwealth of Australia, General Sir Dallas Brooks.' From Wikpedia: "Brooks was appointed Governor of Victoria by Premier Thomas Hollway and served from 1949 to 1963. During his term as governor, he acted as Administrator of the Commonwealth three times. He served in this capacity for almost seven months after the governor-general, Viscount Dunrossil, suddenly died in office in 1961 after serving only one year. A menu card for a dinner given to farewell Group Captain Thomas W White, D.F.C., V.D given by his friends on the occasion of his appointment as High Commissioner for Australia in the United Kingdom. Although this dinner on 25 June 1951 was not an official Legacy function, many of the names such as S.H. Birrell, F.J. Doolan and J.G. Gillespie on the back page under the heading 'Hosts' are recognisable as Legatees. This may not have been an exhaustive list of attendees, as evidenced by the abbreviation E.& O.E. (errors and omissions excepted) following the list. T W White was knighted during his term as High Commissioner, but died of a heart attack in 1957 only a year after he retired to South Yarra. The food served at the dinner was typical of the times but the pudding (Bombe Nesselrode) is worthy of mention - it was a frozen pudding which was popular in the Victorian era, flavoured with chestnuts and maraschino, which is not often seen today. According to www.historicfood.com it was 'originally made by the French chef de cuisine Carême in 1814 for the diplomat Count Karl Von Nesselrode and became the most popular ice pudding of the nineteenth century, particularly appreciated by the English upper classes.' A lawn bowls contest in 1990 held at East Malvern RSL lawn bowls Club. The winner of the Dallas Brooks Trophy was Andrew Tucker and he met the previous year's winner, Thomas Tucker (no relation). The event was held annually and was a fundraiser for Legacy and well as a social event for legatees. A copy of the text an address by Legatee R T Eldridge at a Legacy event on 24 January 1984 to honour Sir Thomas Blamey who had been a patron of Legacy. The speech summarises his life, including his war service in both world wars and inter war years as Chief Commissioner of Police, Victoria. In World War 2 the speech outlines he was in the middle east before returning to Australia and had some difficulties with US General McArthur and also the Press. The penultimate paragraph says "Nobody but Blamey could have been appointed Commander in Chief, held McArthur at bay and influenced the Australian Government through Curtin. On this 'national level he showed wisdom, fortitude, loyalty and a degree of tact. He was indifferent to public opinion, was abrupt, intolerant of little men, had poor opinion of the politicians and the press which created difficulties and detractors." A leaflet from a parade held to present the Field Marshall Sir Thomas Blamey memorial fund awards and the Citizen Military Forces Officer Training course prizes for 1967. The parade was held on 26 May 1968. It included a Blamey Memorial Fund Oration by Brigadier J D Rogers which is a summary of his life and service. Sir Thomas Blamey was patron of Legacy for some years. To perpetuate his memory and achievements The Field Marshal Sir Thomas Blamey Memorial Fund was established by a number of eminent persons in late 1954. The fund was to make periodic awards to members of the Australian Defence Force selected for outstanding qualities of leadership. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Ken Green (President of Melbourne Legacy in 1981). The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee Green was born in 1917 and died in 1987. More details of his life are outlined in the articles. Colin graduated the RMC Duntroon as an infantry officer and his active service included two year in Malaya with 3RAR in 1957-59 and two tours in South Vietnam, in 1964 with the Australian Army Training Team and in 1969 as GS02 (Ops) HQ of 1st Australian Task Force and the Australian Force Vietnam. He attained rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He joined Peninsula Group, Melbourne Legacy in 1976, and served as its president in 1985. A portrait of a Legatee that had rejoined to serve in the second World War. The caption says it is Legatee E T T Scott. From NAA.gov.au Edward Thomas Tronson Scott joined on 6 March 1918 to serve in World War One, he was enroute on a troop ship when Armistice occurred and then ship returned to Australia. He caught influenza and was hospitalised for several months before being discharged. His records from the DVA show he enlisted 13 July 1940 and attained the rank of Major (service number VX46714), his posting at discharge was AASC Vic L of C Area. The portrait was in an album of photos taken in the 1940s (mostly 1945). The newsletter from July 1951. It featured former Sir Thomas Blamey on the cover. The president's introduction talked of the death of Sir Thomas Blamey and his career. There was a piece on the Legacy residence named after Blamey with photos of the residence in Balcombe Road, Black Rock. Pages showed news from the different Boys and Girls Classes and suggested physical exercises. Plus a piece on the Mothers' Club and the Intermediate Club activities. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War". A small wallet of badges donated back to Melbourne Legacy by the family of Field Marshall Sir Thomas A Blamey (who was once a Patron of Legacy) and his son Lt. Col. Thomas R Blamey who was an active supporter of Legacy throughout his life, especially on the Mornington Peninsula. The folder contains 21 badges of various colours and donation values. Black and white photocopies of articles and information about the first Blamey House owned by Legacy between 1947 and 1956. It includes articles about the opening in November 1949 with Sir Thomas Blamey in attendance. It shows the property was described as "a home, a huge rambling weatherboard house with a swimming pool, flood-lit tennis court, and four acres of beautifully kept lawns and gardens." The title deed was handed over to Legacy by Sir Robert Knox, the chairman of trustees of Blamey House, Melbourne (the servicemen hostel that had been operating during the war). Other pages show the property had been built in 1930 as a holiday home for Toorak business man Mr Arthur Jack and his wife Ms Langlands-Jack. It was sold to James Picken by 1941 and it was known as 'Mossgiel'. The Pickens remained owners until 1947 when it was purchased on behalf of Legacy with money donated by the Blamey House Trustees (the servicemen hostel that operated during the war) to be used as a toddlers and childrens' home. When Legacy no longer required the property it was sold to the Beaumaris RSL (or it's precursor RSSALIA) as its clubrooms. There was controversy in 2015 when it was sold to developers for housing.
