Football was played on rough surfaces which had holes and mud. The goal posts were timber props positioned much further apart than they are today. This team pictured helped South Bendigo win its 21st flag in 1900. Bendigo Football Association was superseded by the Bendigo Football League in 1913. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Undertakers: Peter Fizelle and Michael Mulqueen formed a partnership in 1898 which continued until Fizelle's death in 1901. It was then that Michael Mulqueen became the sole proprietor of the parlour with his brother John in charge of stables - an integral part of the business as many of the cabs were hired from the ranks next to the Shamrock Hotel. The business continued in this format until 1926 when the brothers purchased a motorised hearse, built in Melbourne by Australian Motor Industries.
