Box, c. 1921
According to the Australian War Memorial, "The Red Cross maintained a policy of ensuring that comfort and entertainment for the wounded in hospital was onging and stated in its Gazette of December 1917 'Wherever they are, our boys will have a reminder on Christmas Day that the thoughts and sympathy of their people in far-off Australia are with them.' The boxes were usually packed in Australia and contained 'a pipe, tobacco, cigarettes, chocolate, playing cards, match-box, handkerchief and an attractive card, Australian in nature, conveying greetings from the Society.' (Gazette no 7, January 1918)." This particular example dates to 1921, after the war had ended. It is apparent that the efforts of the Red Cross extended beyond wartime years, possibly to those still stationed overseas or returned servicemen and women. This box is an example of charitable gift boxes which were delivered to Australian troops during the war by the Australian Red Cross Society.Wood imitation printed card box in two parts, rectangular in shape fashioned from two pieces of card folded and stapled on shorter sides. DVD, Rajon Distribution Pty Ltd, Life in the Trenches
Distributor's blurb: " The First World War (1914-1918) was supposed to be 'the war to end all wars'. For the young, eager and patriotic men who enlisted in their thousands to fight for King and Country, it was to be a marvellous adventure - an opportunity to march to Glory with the battalions of 'pals' and 'chums'. Nothing could have prepared them for the nightmare that beckoned. This video explains what it meant to live and fight on the Western front, from the innocent patriotism of 'Kitchener's Army' to the war weary anger of the war poets. This is the story of the horror of life in the trenches. Powerful contemporary film footage and photgraphic images are revealed in this DVD, featuring the latest computer graphics and dramatised accounts of those who were there, with comment and analysis by Dr. David Chandler and a special appearance by Brian Blessed.DVD: 1-16x Speed 55 Minutes 4.7 GB Picture Format 4:3 Colour PAL 0 Disc Format DVD 5 Audio Content 2.0 Stereo9 325425 026123dvd, life in the trenches, ww1 -

Equipment - Belaying Pin
Belaying pins can be metal but are often made of wood, treated or untreated, plain or with handles. A belaying pin is used to secure the running ropes of the rigging to the ship's rails using holes drilled onto the rails for that purpose. The belaying pins are inserted into holes in the ship’s rail, drilled for that purpose. When the sail has been raised, the ropes are wrapped around the upper and lower sections of the pins in a figure-eight pattern. The shapes of these belaying pins taper from the rounded end of the handle inwards towards the bottom, which allows them to have a firm fit into the holes in the rails. The rigging rope is wound around the pins in such a way that a tug on the pin's handle pulls it out of the hole and quickly frees the rope and the sail. These belaying pins are significant for their association with sailing vessels, particularly vessels of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Belaying pin, metal, painted brown.flagstaff hill, warrnambool, maritime village, maritime museum, flagstaff hill maritime museum & village, shipwreck coast, great ocean road, sailing equipment, nautical equipment, rigging, yards, sails, belaying pin, sailing ship -

Functional object - Hand Shears
Hand shears - also called blade shears - were used to shear sheep prior to the introduction of machine shears and are still used today where no power machinery is available. Hand shears consist of two blades with a hinge at the end furthest from the point. The cutting edges pass each other as the shearer squeezes them together and shears the wool close to the animal's skin. In 1892 Jack Howe an Australian shearer sheared 321 sheep in one day using hand shears. This record has never been broken. This pair was made by Burgon and Ball in Sheffield under patent number 294. Filed in 1865, this brand of shears has been in constant production since then, although this pair was probably made in the 1930s.Spring double handled hand shears for shearing sheep."HIND'S PATENT DOUBLE HOLLOW GROUND BURGON AND BALL PATENT NO. 294 (inside a shield with a crown on top) MADE IN ENGLAND"churchill island, hand shear, burgon and ball, shearing -

Midwifery box used by midwife Mary Howlett, c. 1866 - 1920
Mary Howlett (1840-1922) began practising as a country midwife in 1866 in the western district of Victoria. She qualified as a 'ladies monthly nurse' in 1887 and continued to practise as a nurse and midwife until 1920.She began her six months training at the Melbourne Lying-In Hospital. She was known by many as 'Auntie', and her career spanned more than 50 years. Mrs Howlett's midwifery box and contents were given to Dr Frank Forster, and he donated them to the museum collection in 1993. The contents of this box are consistent with use by a midwife, but such a box would have been cumbersome and heavy to carry around. It is possible that Mary Howlett would also have had a bag for her midwifery requirements. This midwifery box is highly significant as it includes close to the original contents of one midwife's 'professional kit' up to 1920. The contents reveal something of the professional practice of a midwife in country Victoria at that time.A wooden box with hinged lift-up lid, one drawer, and an inner wooden tray. Rests at each side inside box indicate another tray may have originally sat across the top. Pasted inside the lid is a product list from Robert McDonald (chemist and druggist). There are locks for both the main chest section and the drawer. A circular section is cut out of the bottom of the drawer. The contents of the box include, enema syringe, a red rubber douche, glass breast pump, nipple shields, a thermometer in travel case. Also includes cotton bandages, a tooth extractor, and fetal stethoscope.midwifery -

Clothing - Sample of Knitting, c. 1940s
This knitted layette including a bonnet, cardigan, and two booties was created by Mrs Lavinia Brown, a champion knitter who loved Churchill Island. Mrs Brown was born on 16 June 1913 in Regent, and she entered all of her knitting into the Royal Melbourne Show. Her daughter recalls that her knitting never won anything less than first prize, and was most often Champion. She remembers that once Mrs. Brown's work was disqualified as being 'machine knitted', and after an appeal in which she was required to knit a pattern in front of them, she was awarded the champion. Mrs Brown chose to use bicycle spokes with wax ends as she could not find needles small enough for use to make babies' clothing.Lavinia Brown loved Churchill Island, and this was donated by her daughter, A. Sewing Machine, 19th Century
This sewing machine, made in Germany in the 19th Century, was used extensively in Tatura Camp 3. Its owner; Mrs Elisabeth Hoffmann, was permitted to bring it with her from Palestine on condition that she would make it available to everyone who wanted to use it. There was a roster system and the machine was in constant use for five years. Because normal dress material was scarce, the internees made clothes out of some of the grey army blankets and burgundy overcoats issued to them. The coats were boiled to remove the burgundy dye, then re-dyed green, navy or black, and converted into various items of clothing. The sewing machine coped well with this heavy use. After release from the camp in 1946, Mrs. Hoffmann continued to use it until 1972.Hand operated, table top model sewing machine, with decorative pattern and lettering in gold, hinged to wooden caseGM Pfaff, Kaiserlauternsewing machine, pfaff, polacsek e, uhlherr h, camp 3, tatura, domestic, sewing -

This certificate was awarded to Violet Murrell for a race sponsored by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria in 1929. Violet Murrell (formerly Violet Farmer) was one of the best female riders in Victoria, who won many events for dressage, show jumping and straight-out gallops at country meetings. When she married Bill Murrell, a well-known jockey, they came to live in Mentone. Photograph c. 1980s, Introduction of TTY Technology
TTY means a Text Telephone, or is sometimes referred to as a Telephone typewriter or telecommunication device for the Deaf. TTY is the more widely accepted term, however, many people use TTYs, not just people who are deaf. A TTY is a special device that lets people who are deaf, hearing impaired, or speech-impaired use the telephone to communicate, by allowing them to type messages back and forth. With early TTY models (such as in the photos) you set a telephone handset onto special acoustic cups built into the TTY. As you type, the message is sent over the telephone line, just as your voice would be sent over the telephone line if you talked. You can read the other person's response on the TTY's text display. These photos are significant as they record the introduction of TTY technology at Vicdeaf. TTY technology is a text-based system for communicating over phone lines and its introduction made the deaf and hearing impaired less isolated. Document - Speech, Legacy Commemorative Address by Brigadier Neil Weekes AM, 2007
A copy of a speech at the Commemorative Service held during the National Conference in Townsville in October 2007. He mentions the battle of Fromelles in WW1. It looks at how lucky Australia was that Legacy was around to look after families of other conflicts. "While we send our young men and women into dangerous situations the chances are that someone will be killed. Then a family will be in darkness, but at least they will know that there is a torch, a Legacy torch, that will help them, via the Legatees, through their difficult times. That torch is not just a light in the darkness it is the light of the human spirit, of mateship. It is a light of hope that helps one go forward." Document was from a folder of documents donated to the archive by Legatee Bill Rogers that related to his time as President (March 2006 - March 2008).A record of a prominent serviceman being involved with the Legacy conferences.Three A4 page photocopy of a speech by Lieut Weekes at the Commemorative Service of the National Conference 7 October 2007.conferences, brigadier neil weekes
