The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. The London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company began in 1854 as the London Stereoscope Company (LSC), from 1856 was known as the London Stereoscopic Company, and from May 1859 as the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company.This card is from the collection of a pioneer family of the City of Moorabbin.Stereograph Card manufactured by 'The London Stereoscopic Company' 54 Cheapside - black and whiteThe Falls of Montmorenci, near Qubec, Canada "These beautiful falls are eight miles distant from Quebec, on the Montmorenci river and situated at a point where the river is sixty feet wide. The descent of the torrent is 250 feet higher than those of Niagra, but only about fifty feet in width. The effect of the view of these falls upon the beholder is most delightful. The river at some distance seems suspended in the air, in a sheet of billowy foam. The water which first breaks over the ledge in on sheet is more and more divided as it plunges against the successive layers of rock, which it almost completely veils from view; the spray becomes very delicate and abundant, from top to bottom, hanging over, and revolving round the torrent, till it becomes lighter and more evanescent than the whitest fleecy clouds of summer." In the winter time the spray form the fall freezes in the form of a cone to a height of nearly 100 feet, and at such time the falls a greatly resorted to for the amusement of sliding down the cone with the tobogen, or Indian sleigh. Taken in the 1990’s, the photograph depicts an exhibition in Beechworth featuring a series of shop fronts or a streetscape inspired by the 1850s gold rush to Beechworth. Gold was discovered in the Beechworth area in 1852, leading to a significant rush to the area as diggers and hopeful migrants alike hoped to strike it rich. This gold rush to Beechworth, which was part of a larger and prolonged gold rush to the Victorian colony in the 1850’s, led to significant communal, social, and economic shifts in the area and the colony.This photograph contains historical and social significance, connecting with several themes such as gold mining, making regional centres, and marking significant phases of development for Victoria’s towns. The gold rush of the 1850’s was a significant historical phase for the Victorian colony that led to widespread social, economic, and communal changes as the population of the colony nearly tripled in size. The rush to Beechworth after the discovery of gold in 1852 was one of the earliest gold finds. The photograph depicts an interpretation of store fronts in Beechworth during the 1850’s following the gold rush, providing an example of the historical interpretation of the Beechworth gold rush in the 1990’s. The photograph also demonstrates the enduring importance of Beechworth’s gold rush history to the local community, who continued to demonstrate an interest in the Beechworth gold rush. The Cramond and Dickson Store was a major one in Warrnambool operating from 1856 to 1973. Both John Glass Cramond and James Dickson , the original firm partners were prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool. These labels are important ones because the Cramond and Dickson store was major one on the corner of Liebig and Timor Streets, Warrnambool. Anthony Truscott (1856 -1913) was born in Cornwall. He established a grocery store in Havilah St., Long gully and shortly before his death he handed the business to his so Anthony.Grocer's daybook. The book has a red cover and brown spine. It has 514 pages, used by the storekeeper to record the purchases made by customers. The re-drafting of the constitution set out by the British Mission to Seamen coincides with the centenary of establishment of the 1856 Mission in London. This pamphlet appears to have been received by someone who was offered a Life membership in 1957.6 pages of text pamphlet outlining a brief history and outcome of a Special meeting of members at Buckingham Palace gardens 16th May 1956, that is a redesigned Constitution of the Mission to Seamen. Designed to include non-British based Mission representatives. Gold was discovered at Vaughan in 1853. Vaughan had a high proportion of miners who belonged to one of the Methodist churches. This stained glass lancet window was presented to Christ Church by John Fletcher's immediate relatives as a memento to his Life and influence. He was born in approx. 1856. Henry Sutton was born at Ballarat on 03 September 1856. He taught Electricity and Magnetism at the Ballarat School of Mines between 1883 and 1887. Sutton was an incredible inventor. The Somerset Inn was built for Edward Carter Holmes by carpenter Isaac Sutherland and his two sons in 1855/1856. Situated on Bruce's Creek on the Shelford - Bannockburn Road.
