She was a cabinet minister in the second Rudd ministry and is now part of the Shadow Cabinet. Gough Whitlam was Australian Prime Minister from 1972 to 1975. The Whitlam government was a reformist government that introduced Medibank, the end of conscription, and free university education. His government was dismissed (parliament was dissolved) on 11 November 1975 by the Governor General Sir John Kerr owing to parliament's failure to pass Appropriation Bills. Malcolm Fraser was appointed as caretaker Prime Minister until an election was held. Photograph: Norm Borchers, Simon Crean and Betty Borchers Norm Borchers passed away in 2008. Borchers was a Club President of the Sebastopol Lions Club (1975-76). He worked for the railways as an engineering employee and was long-term trade unionist (Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Australian Railways Union) and ALP member; he lived and worked in the Ballarat area. Norm was active in workplace disputes during the ALP split in 1955. He was a long time supporter of Ballarat Trades Hall. Simon Crean served as President of the ACTU - 1985-1990. He served as a member of federal parliament - 1990-2013 - holding various cabinet posts. He retired at the 2013 election. Betty Borchers worked as a legal secretary. There are two coreflute posters. One of Karen Overington and Steve Bracks side by side and the second one of Karen Overington by herself. Karen Overington was a former welfare worker and served as a councillor and mayor (Sebastopol Borough) before she was elected to federal parliament in 1999. Karen did not contest the 2010 election. She died from cancer in 2011. Steve Bracks was the 44th Premier of Victoria from 1999-2007. He served in the shadow ministry as Shadow Treasurer. Steve Bracks was born in Ballarat. Sir David Fairbairn KBE DFC was Honorary Colonel of 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regiment 1981-83. Sir David served with 21st Light Horse prior to World War Two. During WWII he served with the Royal Australian Air Force flying Spitfires in Britain and Europe, and later in the war, in the Pacific theatre. Following the war, he entered politics, holding the federal seat of Farrer from 1949-1975. He was Minister for Defence 1971-73. She came back to Australia owned by the Federal ...Built in 1910 by A & J Inglis, of Glasgow, Scotland (yard no 290). 1412 t. Her length of 310 ft (95 m) made her the largest paddler on the bay, serving until 1942. It was initially owned by Huddart Parker Ltd, Melbourne. She then embarked on a new adventure having been bought by the US Navy for use as an accommodation ship. She sailed to Sydney and then onwards via Brisbane and new Guinea under tow. She ended up in the Philippines sailing as part of the towed convoy of assorted vessels backing up the US invasion. She came back to Australia owned by the Federal Government and sold for scrap. Australian - Polish Community Services was established as an independent organisation at the inaugural meeting on the 10th May 1983. There were four full-time workers who used office at 1 French Street, Footscray by the courtesy of MRC Footscray. The office acted as a first point of contact for all persons of the Polish community who needed welfare services or assistance of any kind. Currently the agency manages eight aged care programs (funded by the federal and state governments) that support over 500 clients a week, with a particular focus on elders from Eastern European backgrounds. The Bendigo Ordnance Factory began operating in 1942, producing heavy artillery and naval guns. In the late 1990s the then Federal Government-owned facility was sold to the multinational Thales, which continues to operate the factory today. This Bendigo Historical Society collection of glass negatives includes some slides of women working in the munitions factory. Seven slides were included in an album that was prepared for Dr Edith Summerskill who visited Australia in 1944 as part of an Empire Parliamentary Delegation. The album included photographs of Australian women working at the factory during WW2. A copy of the album is in the Collection of the Australian War Memorial.Box 1 of 3, Glass Slide Negatives of the Bendigo Munitions Factory, later known as the Ordnance Factory and then the Australian Defence Industries. Each negative is sealed between two pieces of glass. The edges are sealed with thin pieces of tape.
