Joseph William Cairnduff (1876-1929) was born in Hobart, Tasmania. He married Ann Walker in 1900. When he enlisted on 19 August 1914 he was given SERN 4. At the time he was living at 'Tyne', 96 Guildford Road, Surrey Hills. He was 5'5", 38 years old and employed as a civil servant. He had served for 5 years in the Senior Cadets and 3 years in the Australian Signallers. He was given the rank of sergeant in the Divisional Signal Company 1 and embarked for Egypt from Melbourne on board HMAT A10 Karroo on 20 October 1914. Surviving service on Gallipoli and the Western Front, he returned to Melbourne leaving on board HT 'Wiltshire', 12 November 1916. He was discharged medically unfit. Joseph and Ann had a large family before he left for WW1: Ann Mary b.1901; James William Cotter b. 1903; Mathew Norman Banks b. 1904; Doris Jean b.1906; Claude James b, 1908; Elsie Edna b. 1910; Clive Bruce b. 1912 and Gladys Janet b. 1914. After his return he and Ann had more 2 daughters - Sylvia McLaren b. 1917 and Mavis Morley b. 1918, who commenced at Chatham Primary School in 1927 and 1928 respectively. Joseph and Ann are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M-NS-0492). Joseph's twin brother, James Banks Cairnduff (SERN 571) also served in the AIF and is also buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M-NS-0003). After attending Eton College, Herbert Chermside attended the Royal Military Academy where he graduated at the top of his year and was commissioned in the Royal Engineers in 1870. After several postings and expeditions, including the Arctic in 1873, he was promoted to captain in 1882 and appointed to the British Army's intelligence staff in Egypt and given command of the Egyptian Army's 1st Battalion. He spent four years in Egypt. Promotions and consular appointments followed and eventually he returned to Britain. He was appointed in command of the Curragh Camp in Ireland, 1900. However, he was sent to South Africa to command the 14th brigade and the 3rd division during the Second Boer War. Late 1901 he returned to his position in Ireland and in 1902 he was appointed the first Post-Federation Governor of Queensland, Australia. He announced his retirement in 1904 and returned to Britain. He retired from the Army in 1907. Chermside was awarded the Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1886, Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1880, upgraded to Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1897 and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1899. This hand carved framed mirror is part of a special bequest to the Mont De Lancey Museum of hand carved furniture and items made by Mr Franz Striezel by his grandaughter Mrs Dorothy Adamson. Dorothy was a friend of Nella Lord (nee Sebire). Dorothy passed away in 2007. It was to be known as The Franz Striezel Collection. Franz Streizel came from Germany in 1886 and was one of the three recognised craftsmen (Art Carvers) in Australia who contributed to the wood carvings in public buildings and honour boards throughout Australia. The National Gallery at their request had two small panels and a tobacco jar (some of his work), donated by Mrs D Adamson.
