Private Bertie Ernest Alfred Henderson served in the 5th Pioneer Battalion, 5th Division of the AIF. He died of wounds In France on 29/5/1918 or 1/6/1918. His burial place is Crouy British Cemetery, Crouy-sur-Somme. The framed 'In Memoriam' has been in the custody of family members until presented to W&DHS in 2013 by Mrs Beris Porter. Pte BEA Henderson, 1866, 3 Pioneer Battalion(2 Reinforcement Group) was a farmer and single. His father was Mr HH Henderson of Naringal. He enlisted on 27/5/1916 then sailed on the Themistocles on 28/7/1916 and transferred to the 5 Pioneer Battalion. His name is recorded on the War Memorial, Artillery Crescent, Warrnambool as having made the supreme sacrifice.Mass produced Memorial page with a sepia original half portrait photograph of a soldier surrounded with two mounts,narrow white and dark/grey brown, and a thin gold gilt surround next to an inward angled plain, wooden frame with clear glass. Single cylinder horizontal petrol engine mounted on a 4 wheeled trolley. Two flywheels, one either side, no pulley. Galvanised cylindrical fuel tank mounted on a wooden box in front. Box contains a battery and ignition coil. Trolley has cast iron wheels and is designed for pulling by hand. Painted red and grey. Probably a power source for farm machinery. On a brass plate fixed to the cylinder. F. M. Brown & Co were a foundry located (in 1892) on the corners of Creek and High Street in Bendigo. This embosser was manufactured by them for the City of Bendigo. Large, decorated, hand operated cast iron embosser with an top iron winder. Winder has a large knob on each end and when turned lowers and raises the seal. Embosser is decorated with a layer of plaster with is black with gold hand painted decorations including scrolls and flowers. Object is extremely heavy. Robert Clark was a self educated man who had arrived in Australia with his step father to take up mining in 1854. He worked in several local mines and being familiar with the hardships associated with mining life, helping to establish the eight hour day for miners. Robert married Sarah Jane Kernaghan in 1862 and together they had nine children. Robert Clark was first elected in 1872 and remained a councillor until his death in 1883. He died aged 41 years. This elaborate Letter of Appreciation was hand drawn and painted by artist and photographer Frederick de Kock who was associated with Mr N Caire's photographic Studio, View Place and by 1882 was producing and teaching hand painting on ceramics. In 1883 he advertised as a photographer with his own studio on the corner of Mitchell and King Street, which was later named the Bendigo Portrait Rooms. 180.1 Donated by Jenny Taylor; 180.2 Organisational created.
