8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection
Book, Glimpses of Colonel Tom
This is a supplement to Winty Calder's earlier work 'Heroes and Gentlemen'. Thomas Caradoc Rose Price CB, often known as Colonel Tom Price, was an Australian soldier, and acting commandant of the Commonwealth Military Forces in Victoria in 1902. Joining the British Indian Army in his early years, he served 20 years in India before returning to Australia. In 1885, he raised the Victorian Mounted Rifles, and was instrumental in establishing the concept of light horse units within the Australian Army. In 1900, he led a Victorian contingent during the Second Boer War, and was the only Australian officer during that war to command a force of British regulars. He remained in the Australian military after the war, serving in Queensland until 1904 when he was medically discharged. He retired to Victoria again and died in 1911 at the age of 68.Soft cover book with adhesive binding on spine, A4 size, 56 pages being a collection of addresses and letters of Colonel Tom Price, compiled by Winty Calder, published by Jimaringle Publications 1985. In 1977, the Leopard AS 1 Main Battle Tank entered service with the Royal Australian Armoured Corps. It was the replacement for the Centurion Tank, which had given sterling service since 1952 including four years on active service in South Vietnam. Although the Leopard AS1 had been in service for 23 years, with some upgrading it still has a formidable battlefield presence and will be a key weapon system in the Australian Army inventory. Transport by rail was the major method of moving the tank around the country.Five coloured photographs of Leopard tanks on rail wagons at Albury Railway Station, circa 1978. -

Photograph - Technical Tour of the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1984
... Army Survey Regiment personnel. Royal Australian Survey Corps ...This collection of 10 photos was most likely taken in 1984. It’s evident in these photos the visitors were taken on a tour through the production areas of Air Survey Squadron, with Wild B8 photogrammetic plotting workstations featured in the first three photos and demonstrations of the AUTOMAP 2 production system in the following photos. The AUTOMAP 2 system was an upgrade to the AUTOMAP 1 system comprising Intergraph graphic edit workstation terminals networked to VAX 750/785 main frame computers. Unlike AUTOMAP 1, operators could display digital topographic features on monitors for editing. Successful adaptation of this system meant RASvy was at the forefront of digital mapping/cartographic systems in Australia and overseas. The system comprised Input (B8 feature extraction) Raster Scanning (digitising from compilation sheets, Graphic Edit (cartographic completion) and Plot Verification Sub Systems. CAPT Rob John was the project officer responsible for the acceptance trials and implementation of AUTOMAP 2. The system was operational from 1984 to its ‘Newheart’ upgrade in 1993. Throughout its life, the system was progressively refined with productivity gains, achieved from award winning technical development in-house by talented and innovative Army Survey Regiment personnel. This is a set of 10 photograph of a technical tour of the Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1985.
