Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and VillageTool - Caulking iron, mid-to-late 20th century
Caulking is the use of cork or other substances to seal the seams and joints of the vessel to make them watertight. Caulking lasts for quite some time but eventually dries out and needs to be replaced. A mallet or hammer is often used with a caulking iron to drive it along the seams. The caulking iron’s blade is tapered to be narrower at the tip to make it easier to remove it from the joint. The shipwright’s tools on display in the Great Circle Gallery are connected to the maritime history of Victoria through their past owner, user and donor, Laurie Dilks. Laurie began his career as a shipwright in the mid-1900s, following in the wake of the skilled carpenters who have over many centuries used their craft to build and maintain marine vessels and their fittings. You can see Laurie’s inscription on the tool called a ‘bevel’. Laurie worked for Ports and Harbours, Melbourne, for over 50 years, beginning in the early 1960s. He and a fellow shipwright inscribed their names on a wheelhouse they built in 1965; the inscription was discovered many decades later during a repair of the plumbing. Many decades later Laurie worked on the Yarra moving barges up and down the river and was fondly given the title ‘Riverboat Man’ His interest in maritime history led him to volunteer with the Maritime Trust of Australia’s project to restore and preserve the historic WWII 1942 Corvette, the minesweeper HMAS Castlemaine, which is a sister ship to the HMAS Warrnambool J202. Laurie Dilks donated two handmade displays of some of his tools in the late 1970s to early-1980s. The varnished timber boards displayed the tools below together with brass plaques. During the upgrade of the Great Circle Gallery Laurie’s tools were transferred to the new display you see there today. This hand groover is sometimes called a seamer, grooving iron, punch or fuller. It would have been used by a metal smith, such as a blacksmith, tinsmith or sheet metal worker. It is used to join two edges of metal. The smith overlaps the edges of the metal, then places the tool on top and beats it with a hammer on the top, forcing the metal into the tool's groove, which joins the metal. The device would be moved along the edges to complete the seam. The same tool could give a decorative finish to an artisan's work.This handmade tool was made for the particular purpose of joining sheets of metal together. The metal formed in this way could be used for water tanks, boilers and other similar items. It is an example of the equipment made and used in the trades of a metalsmith and blacksmith in the 19th and early 20th centuries.Tool: a fuller, used to form a groove in heated iron. Steam Locomotive - 2-6-2 2-6-2 Beyer Peacock & Co Garratt NGG16 No.129 build No. 7430 Loco - Garratt NG129 Date acquired - 1996 Acquired from - South African Railways State when acquired - Work done - Currently being rebuilt to 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) gauge as a backup for G42. Expected Return to service in 2019. Restored to service - Current State - Currently being Rebuilt It was built by Beyer Peacock & Co of Manchester (builder's No.7430 of 1951) to their "Beyer Garratt" patented design of articulated steam locomotive. The South African Railways Class NG G16 2-6-2+2-6-2 of 1937 is a narrow gauge steam locomotive. Between 1937 and 1968, the South African Railways placed 34 Class NG G16 Garratt articulated steam locomotives with a 2-6-2+2-6-2 Double Prairie type wheel arrangement in service on the Avontuur Railway and on the Natal narrow gauge lines - The third order was for a further seven locomotives in 1951, numbered in the range from NG125 to NG131, once again from Beyer, Peacock. These and the subsequent locomotives had welded water and coal bunkers and flat-topped water tanks with rounded top side edges. 22 NBHC - Passenger Carriage - Excursion Car - specially modified for Wheelchair access allowing it to carry for wheelchairs and Guard's Van Puffing Billy Service History or Notes Between 1979 and 1988 the Puffing Billy railway built six more NBHs, numbered 18-23. These had steel frames, padded seats, and a wide "window sill". At first glance they look the same as the previous NBHs. There are other minor construction differences due to the use of steel framing. 22NBH entered traffic in 1998. Currently these six steel framed NBHs (numbers 18-23) are being modified to provide double doors and space for wheel chairs at one end. The photo on the right shows the exterior of one such NBH. These have a seating capacity of 24 passengers. Oct 2009 - Rebuild continues. In October 2000, Council invited three artists from the region (Deborah Halpern, Matcham Skipper, Tony Trembath) to submit designs for a sculpture / public art work for the Eltham Town Square. The commission was paid for by supermarket giant Safeway (Woolies) as part of its supermarket permit, which required them to contribute to beautification work in the Town Square.This is the first of three parts. The 'Spirit of Nillumbik' is a celebration of the artistic spirit of Eltham and surrounding communities. Each area is identified through the flora and fauna represented in the panels. The work honours the many creative artists and architects, past and present, who have built homes and shaped lives and livelihoods with their unique creative spirit. Halpern describes her work as a public expression of their individual and collective visions. Halpern acknowledges these contributions to our hand-made history and the influence they have on the character and identity of Eltham and Nillumbik. Five picture and six woven balustrades each made out of welded steel / organic wrought iron and coated with wax. Imagery (flora - plants, landscapes and fauna - animals, birds, reptiles, insects) are all based on the local environment. There is also a relevant aboriginal presence amongst each of the panels. Each panel represents the different areas that make up the Shire. 'Water' for Warrandyte, 'Kangaroos' for Christmas Hills, 'Cockatoos and 'Valley Creek Flats' for Hurstbridge, 'Wombats', 'Bluetongues' and 'Possums' for St. Andrews/Kinglake, 'Orchids' for Panton Hill, 'Cows' and 'Grapevines' for the Kangaroo Gound Hill landmark. Dean Bowen is renowned for his charming, child-like aesthetic and unique thematic interplay between the urban and rural as well as humans and animals. Bowen has developed a distinctive and humorous symbolic language that filters through each work. His highly charismatic and whimsical renderings of animals, human characters and Australian environments celebrate the vicissitudes of life, evincing the simple pleasures of human habitation within the artificial and the natural world. The work and thoughts of Jean Dubuffet, particularly those which focus on the philosophy of 'Art Brut', give support to Dean's belief that untrained artists are more honest, that artists interested in emulating the art of children are trying to regain the pure expression they lost with childhood. 'The Offering' was a finalist in the Nillumbik Art Awards in 1997. The work refers to the act of giving back, rather than taking which Bowen sees as more prevalent in our Western society. While the image is childlike, the expression of the boy is a mixture of sadness and happiness, knowing and naivety, youth and age. The smile has a Mona Lisa quality and the earthy and sensuous colours suggest landscape. When realising the images he relies on memory rather than observation so that the struggle with drawing and representation sometimes doesn't work. The style of the drawing and the flat space relates to the graphic style of cartoons and caricature. Carl Wehl and Son Bark Mill, located in Taylor Street Stawell. The coloured photo depicts what remains of the building in Taylor St. Stawell. The mill has not been used for many years. The original factories were on Stawell Flat. Carl Wehl a native of Hanover, Germany came to Victoria in 1861. Carl Wehl was at Pleasant Creek in 1872 when he started business as a wool scourer and tanner. By 1880 his business of tanning wool scouring discontinued, and he commenced trading, (mongering) in Bark Milling. The Mill was described as being the largest of its kind outside Melbourne,Two photographs of a weather board building with corrugated iron roof. One black & white photo and an enlarged photo of the building when used as a Bark Mill. The coloured photo obviously more recent as the writing has faded and can just be made out on the front of the building. One of the original colour photos is missing (152-2).
