The photos are the presentation by Alan Holmes President of Bendigo RSL to Cliff Clohesy in February 1997. Clifford Clohesy served on the Committee Bendigo RSL 1989 to 1991, 1993 to 1996, he was President the years 1993 to 1996. Cliff was a hard worker in the two RSL Appeals each year. One of his achievements was the building of 22 Single person units in Kangaroo Flat finished in 1997. Alan William Holmes served on the Committee 1993 to 2001. He was President the years 1997 to 2001. Two of the later years was the change over from Bendigo RSL to Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc. He was the Organizer of events for the "Australia Remembers" 50 years after the end of WW2 in Bendigo. It was Alans proposal to turn the SMI into a Museum in 1996 with the first Museum Sub Committee being formed in May 1997 and the opening in February 1998. Now the Bendigo Military Museum. He stayed heavily involved until 2003. He was the organizer and conducted the Sandakan Memorial Service from 1999 to 2012. From there as much as possible Alan visited veterans in Nursing homes and a Wing of "BUPA" was named "Holmes Wing". The uniform belonged to Wing Commander "Leonard Bacon", born 11 June 1906. He enlisted in the RAAF on 31 May 1926 No. 03305 with the rank AC.1. In 9 postings in Vic, QLD and WA he rose through 11 ranks to Sgt Maj Class 2 by 1940. He was commissioned as Flying Officer on 1.8.1940. He rose through the ranks to be Wing Commander on 1.7.1951. During WW2 from 1941 he was explosives Inspecting Officer at Northern Area 5 then to Explosive Inspecting Officer for the whole RAAF in the S/W Pacific. This role took him to some 21 places in the North from Townsville - Darwin to across the islands many several times. Leonard was awarded a "Mention in Despatches" on Morotai in 1945. Post WW2 in 1950 Leonard was appointed Chief Inspector of explosives in the RAAF, one of these roles was the supervision of the disposal of large quantities of War Stock. On 13.6.1958 he was recommended for an “OBE” which he received in the 1959 New Years Honors List. Leonard retired from the RAAF on 11.6.1960 after 34 years. This is a set of five black & white photographs of troops from the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment undertaking ceremonial drill at the military funeral for SSGT Peter Dew in 1977. The location of the funeral service was at Fortuna, Bendigo. He was buried at Bendigo Cemetery in Quarry Hill. Peter Dew died in a tragic accident at home. He was fondly remembered as one of Lithographic Squadron’s colourful personalities. See item 6243.7P for photos of Peter Dew at work in Lithographic Squadron. The "Super Animal of the Year" Peter Dew Memorial Award was an award presented to a member of the squadron for a crude act. Frame 5. Photo 1. Lonely graves on a battlefield. This has been identified as "Vaire Wood cemetery" just south of the Somme at Vaire-sous-Corbie. Some 28 diggers from Vaire Wood were later reburied at Crucifix Corner Cemetery at Villers Bretonneux. Photo 2 and 3. Two photos, troop train luxury travel. This is possibly 45th quota men 'en route' from Gamaches to Havre in early 1919. From Havre they sailed for England on the "Prince George". Photo 4. Bert Grinton receiving his "DCM" from Lady Denman for actions around Clery on 31/8/1918. His CITATION reads: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Clery on 31st August 1918. he became detached from his Company and joined another party in the advance. mainly through his assistance with a Lews Gun, they cleared an enemy trench, killing about 30 and capturing several machine guns. he got on top of the trench and under heavy fire silenced a field gun which was firing over open sights. In 1941 he is elected to the Committee of the Bendigo RSL, serves as Snr Vice President 1949 - 57 then President 1958 - 60. Maxwell Barry Cowden VX19297 enlisted in the 2/nd AIF on 30.5.1940 age 18 years (put his age up to 21) in 2/2 Pioneer Battalion AIF, embarked for the Middle East 8.4.1941, promoted L/Cpl 25.6.1941, promoted Cpl 29.10.1941, took part in the Syrian Campaign. On 31.1.1942 the unit embarked for Australian but were diverted to Java to defend it, disembarked 18.2.1942. Java surrendered and they were taken POW, reported MIA on 30.4.1942 then after as POW. As a POW he worked on the Burma Railway. In December 1944 they were on the Hell Ship AWA Maru and sailed for Japan to work in the Coal Mines arriving mid Jan 1945. He was repatriated back to Australia on the HMS Formidable, discharged on 28.11.1945 with the rank of Cpl. Joyce Hayward was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1981 for services to the arts in Warrnambool. The British Empire Medal was instituted in 1917 as part of the Order of the British Empire and in 1922 became a separate award known as the British Empire Medal. Joyce Hayward came with her husband Cyril to Warrnambool from England in 1955. For 30 years they were the dominant figures in the performing arts organizations in Warrnambool. Joyce Hayward was the Director of the Warrnambool Theatre Company from 1955 to 1985 and directed more than 80 plays and musicals. She founded the Warrnambool Calisthenics Club, helped develop the Holiday Actors organization and was a key figure in the revival of the Warrnambool Arts Council in the 1970s. She was a Life Member of the Warrnambool Theatre Company. She also helped establish the Performing Arts Centre in Warrnambool. She received the Warrnambool City Council Citizenship Award in 1970.It is a significant honour to be awarded a British Empire Medal and the acquisition by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society of the medal awarded to Joyce Hayward is of considerable importance. Joyce Hayward and her husband, Cyril came from England to Warrnambool in 1955. For 30 years she and her husband were dominant figures in the performing arts organizations in Warrnambool. Joyce was the Director of the Warrnambool Theatre Company from 1955 to 1985 and directed more than 80 plays and musicals. She founded the Warrnambool Calisthenics Club, helped develop the Holiday Actors Company and was a key figure in the revival of the Warrnambool Arts Council in the 1970s. She was a Life Member of the Theatre Group. Along with her husband she helped to develop and build the Warrnambool Performing Arts Centre. She was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the arts in Warrnambool in 1981. Warrnambool City Council gives Citizenship Awards annually. This is a significant item as it was an important award received by Joyce Hayward, a prominent person in the Warrnambool arts scene for 30 years. This is a bronze-coloured medallion presented to Joyce Hayward as a citizenship award in 1970. It is circular in shape with the crest of the City of Warrnambool on one side and a laurel wreath with inscriptions on the other. It has a metal ring at the top for hanging the item. It is in a black leather box lined with red velvet and white silk and includes a small metal stand to display the medallion. This music stand belonged to Eva Veronica Gaspar. Miss Gaspar (1913 -1978) was one of Warrnambool's most notable musicians and photographers. She gave free music lessons to Warrnambool and district children, organised choral festivals and ran a printing business. She was a life member of the Warrnambool Music Society and organized the Mozart Music Festival for many years. She was a Warrnambool Citizen of the Year 1956 and was awarded a British Empire Medal in 1972 for her services to music. She also conducted the Warrnambool Civic Orchestra, St. Joseph's church choir, junior choirs and recorder groups. In 1977 she held an exhibition at the Warrnambool Art Gallery of her photographs, drawings and monochromes. This music stand was used by Eva Gaspar mainly in Mozart Hall in Gilles Street. This stand is of interest as a memento of the work of Eva Gaspar an important musician in Warrnambool in the twentieth century.This is a wooden music stand with a circular base on four feet. The base has an outer ridge with a shallow indent and a domed top into which the pedestal is attached. The pedestal has decorative features . The ledge at the top is rectangular shaped with a projecting curved edge at the base. The top has a compartment for holding music and/or notes. The pedestal is attached to the top tray with a circular brace and metal screws. The whole item has been varnished but is stained and rubbed. This is an empty box but the cover tells us that it was a box used for dentist materials from William Davidson, the Warrnambool dentist. Davidson (1870-1945) came to Warrnambool in 1892 and set up his dental business in the Tozer Buildings in Kepler Street. By 1915 Davidson had one of the most extensive dental practices in the Western District. He served in World War One and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and was mentioned in despatches. In Warrnambool Davidson was a keen sportsman, being active in the cricket and bowls clubs. He retired in the early 1940s. This box is of some significance as it came from the dental practice of William Davidson, a prominent dentist in Warrnambool for nearly 50 years. This is an envelope used in the business of Ludeman Real Estate, Warrnambool. The Director, Bruce Ludeman, had previously been a stock and station agent before establishing his real estate business in Warrnambool in 1985. Bruce Ludeman, a business broker, auctioneer and property manager, is President of the Otway Division of the Real Estate Institute of Victoria and received a Presidents Award in 2012 for services to the real estate industry in the Western District. This envelope is of minor interest as an example of the type of business envelope used today in the real estate businesses in Warrnambool. This is a business-type white envelope with a see-through insert to show the address. It is self-sealing. The name and business address of Ludeman Real Estate is printed at the top left hand corner of the envelope. This book, ‘Tom Wallis’ written by Louis Becke was awarded as a third prize to Bertie Wilson by the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School in 1910. Grasmere is a small settlement about 12 kilometres from Warrnambool and was settled in the 1840s by pastoralists prior to the founding of Warrnambool. The Grasmere Presbyterian Church and Sunday School were established in 1898 though services had been held prior to this date in an older church which was converted at that time to house the Sunday School. The Sunday School was burnt down in 1914 and later rebuilt. Mr Paton, the Sunday School teacher in 1910, was on the Board of Management of the church in 1911. This book is significant because it is a memento of the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School of 1910. Sunday School attendance was a strong feature of the religious, educational and social life of many children in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Sunday Schools still operate but have fewer children attending in relation to the numbers of Protestant churches adherents. This is a hard cover book of 320 pages plus several pages at the end detailing other books published by the Religious Tract Society. The cover is dark red with an illustration in black, red and grey colours of two sailors aboard a ship. The book was a prize given to Bertie Wilson from the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School in 1910. There are several illustrations (black and white plates) inserted throughout the book. The General Service Badge was issued to persons who served full-time for a period of 28 days or more, continuously or in aggregate, and discharged without becoming eligible for the Returned from Active Service Badge during World War II. Persons who were discharged because of misconduct and those who were in a reserved occupation, were not eligible for the badge. This badge was awarded to Ernest Henry Swan. This medal was awarded to Ernest Henry Swan. He served from December 1941 to July 1942 in the Citizen Military Forces and from July 1942 to September 1944 in the Australian Imperial Forces. His reason for discharge was reserved occupation. He held the rank of corporal in 26th Motor regiment. He was born in Colac 19/11/1919 to Ernest Swan and Daisy Johnson. He died 04/08/2009 and is buried at the Warrnambool cemetery. During his life he farmed a soldiers’ settlers block in the Grasmere area, north of Warrnambool.A common item which commemorates the service of many military personnel which fought in World War 2.This medal is round and silver metal with a crowned image of George VI on the obverse and the reverse side has an image of a lion standing on top of a dragon like creature. This tray was commissioned as a perpetual trophy for the Apex District 2 (south west Victoria) public speaking competition. The names of 27 winners from 1977 to 2003 are inscribed on the tray. Apex Clubs are service clubs that provide people with the opportunity to volunteer within their community. Members are aged between 18 and 45. The first Apex Club was formed in Geelong in 1931 and Warrnambool Apex Club was the fifth club established in 1931. It went into recess in 1941 and was re-established in 1952. The club closed in 2011. This tray is of interest as an example of the awards given by local Apex Clubs and is retained because the Warrnambool Apex Club closed in 2011. This is a rectangular-shaped silver-plated tray with an etched decorative pattern, two handles attached to the base by metal screws and two side railings also attached to the tray by metal screws. The base has a brown board (mock leather?) inserted through the metal screws. The tray has the names of the winners of the trophy inscribed around the edge of the tray. This book, a de-luxe copy, was given to John Dwyer as the Chief President of the Australian Natives Association from 1938 to 1940. The Australian Natives Association (A.N.A.) was established in Melbourne in 1871 as a benefit society. Originally membership was restricted to white men born in Australia. The A.N.A. was influential in Australian politics, especially in the 1890s when it campaigned vigorously for Federation. In 1993 it merged with Manchester Unity I.O.O.F. to form Australia Unity, for many years the largest benefit society in Australia. The annual Victorian Conference of A.N.A was held in Warrnambool in 1931. John Beynon Dwyer (1904-1999) came to Warrnambool in 1937 and assumed control of the legal practice in Kepler Street of Desmond Dunne, retiring in 1984. J. B. Dwyer was a long-serving City Councillor (1937-1975) and was awarded an O.B.E. for municipal service in 1966. This book is of considerable importance as it was a presentation copy given to John B. Dwyer, a prominent Warrnambool lawyer, when he retired as Chief President of the Australian Natives Association in 1940. This is a soft-cover book of 92 pages. It is a de-luxe edition with a green leather cover with gold printing on the front. The inside of the covers has a green and yellow mottled pattern The leather on the spine is very worn and the book’s cover is scuffed. There are some insert title pages in yellow and blue thick card.
