A photo of Operation Firewood which provided help to widows by supplying and stacking firewood for the winter. Photo shows a truck being loaded with wood at a depot, believed to be 1987. Legacy provided this for many years, with the help of Linfox who provided the trucks. In the June 1995 edition of The Answer Melbourne Legacy thanked the Cobram/Yarrawonga Group for their help in supplying and cutting the wood over many years. RMS Queen Elizabeth that sailed primarily on the North Atlantic Ocean from 1939 to 1968 for the Cunard Line , later owned by the Queen Corpration and then the Seawise University. Queen Elizabeth was a slightly larger ship (than the Queen Mary) , the largest passenger liner ever built at that time and for 56 years thereafter. She also has the distinction of being the largest-ever riveted ship by gross tonnage. She first entered service in February 1940 as a troopship in World War II, and it was not until October 1946 that she served in her intended role as an ocean liner. With the decline in popularity of the transatlantic route, both ships were replaced by the smaller. Queen Elizabeth was sold to a succession of buyers, and finally was sold to Hong Kong businessman of the Orient Overseas line in 1970. By 1910 revenue from the Beech Forest railway was $15,500, working expenditure $12,000, with a net loss (including interest charges) of about $4,000. This and the following year were the lowest net losses ever experienced. Passenger journeys rose steadily, outwards goods traffic rose to a record 12,959 tons (in 1911), and inwards goods traffic was a record 3,359 tons.. The railway station possessed a goods shed, stock race and yards, engine shed, coal stage, crew cabins, a refreshment room, and a four-roomed station building, with the station staff to match. Beech Forest was the principal despatch centre at this stage for split timber. Edward Blatchford Wright was born in 1894 in Birmingham, son of Edward Wright and Florence Emuss. It is not known when he migrated to Australia but he served in the AIF during WW1, seeing action in France. On enlistment aged 20 years 9 months, he gave his occupation as farmer. He married Gertrude Matilda Wain in 1919. He came to Surrey Hills c1924. He was a grocer in the area for several decades with shops in Canterbury Road. In 1942 he is listed at 235 Union Road. This was a residential address. Alan Holt's Surrey Hills property register places him at 365 Canterbury Road (c1920-1930) and 359 Canterbury Road (c1930-1940). He died in 1972 in Mont Albert. His last electoral roll entry in 1968 gives 18 Serpentine Street, Mont Albert. Pulpwood was often split by hand or with black powder splitting guns into more manageable sizes and cut into 8 foot lengths (or billets). Billets were first stacked endwise to drain the sap and lighten the load before they were loaded by hand onto flat bed trucks for transport to the mills. This long length metal hook was used to pull and manoeuvre the pulpwood billets onto the truck. A newspaper article about Legacy delivering firewood to 130 families in The Age on 21 March 1960. The article calls it 'Operation Wood Lift' but it was normally known as Operation Firewood. The widow was Mrs E Angus of Richmond. Operation Firewood provided help to widows and families by supplying and stacking firewood for the winter. The Thompson brothers, George and Joseph, formerly of Ballarat and the new owners of Yallum Park, established the Glenthompson Brickworks in 1900. The entire process of creating a solid, pressed Glenthompson Brick happens on site, where red and cream clay is excavated. Brick presses dating back to 1940 are still in operation today, the kilns are stacked by hand to ensure specific needs are met and colour varieties are achieved.
