Information about Simon (Simeon) Max and Max family. Sam Sin and Max Sina arrive Melbourne 1857 from Prussia. (half-brothers). Sam Sina (Hebrew name Shimon) married Annie Nathan, Sandhurst Synagogue 1873 (shown on marriage certificate as Simon Sina). Died in Sydney, known as Simon or Simeon Max.. Simon had pawnbroking and jewellery shop in High St, Sandhurst. Annie buried White Hills Jewish Cemetery. Max Sin resided in Sandhurst, married Hannah Mathews. Max Sina signed his marriage certificate Sina Max.person, individual, max family, american ship dragoon, simon max, annie max, bendigo synagogue, hannah mathews. -

George Henry Backhaus (1811-1882) was born in Prussia. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1836 and began his missionary work in India. In 1846 he came to Australia, first ministering in Sydney and then Adelaide. With the discovery of gold in Victoria, Backhaus believed he was called to become a missionary on the goldfields. His first Bendigo mass was celebrated 2/5/1852. He travelled extensively throughout the goldfields eventually establishing a tent church on the site of St Killians in 1852. In 1853 this was replaced by a slab-walled and canvas-roofed church.. The site also included a Catholic school. In 1863 he returned to Germany but came back to Bendigo in 1867. He retired from parish work in 1881 and moved to Melbourne but as his health declined he returned to Bendigo in 1882 to die.The age from 08/01/1966. In 1927 the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) visited Australia. The Port Melbourne Council established a Strong Post in St Kilda Road to welcome the royal couple. Standing third and fourth from left Mrs CRICHTON, holding an Australian flag, and Cr J P CRICHTON. The tall man in centre of photograph looking at the camera is S S ANDERSON, Town Clerk. Second from right is Cr William HOWE, Mayor. In 1927 the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) visited Australia. The Port Melbourne Council established a Strong Post in St Kilda Road to welcome the royal couple. Standing third and fourth from left Mrs CRICHTON, holding an Australian flag, and Cr J P CRICHTON. The tall man in centre of photograph looking at the camera is S S ANDERSON, Town Clerk. Second from right is Cr William HOWE, Mayor. This is a proof version of the final photo also held in the PMHPS collection (293.02) where the oval inset of the royal couple has been swapped from the right hand upper corner in the proof to the upper left corner in final version. Wales are printed in white in the lower right hand corner of the image. On the border, the words Mosman's Bay Sydney Harbour are printed in black and the words Wishing you many happy returns of the day are handwritten there also. On reverse it is addressed to Miss Dean McKenzie St Golden Square. A black and white image of palms appear on the left hand side with the words NSW Bangalore Palms in white along the bottom.
