Initially named the Conservation Corps, the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) was founded in 1959 by the Council for Nature. Today BTCV is the “largest practical conservation charity in the United Kingdom”, and celebrated its fiftieth birthday in February 2009. Its original name had been adapted from that of the Civilian Conservation Corps launched by President Roosevelt in Depression-era USA: - "I propose to create a Civilian Conservation Corps to be used in simple work, not interfering with normal employment, and confining itself to forestry, the prevention of soil erosion, flood control and similar projects. More important, however, than the material gains, will be the moral and spiritual value of such work. Roosevelt’s idea had been revived by Governor Jerry Brown of California in 1976 and exchange of ideas and personnel between the California Conservation Corps (CCC) and other US conservation corps) has flourished since. Mark Dwyer (later to play an important role in Green Corps) was leader of the first California Conservation Corps three-month exchange program to Australia in 1988. This is an original policeman’s helmet, known as a ‘Wolsley’. The design was in use by Victoria Police from 1877 to 1947 then replaced by more suitable caps. The helmets were made in Ballarat by the Victoria Police's official supplier, A W Sudweeks. Some of these helmets were re-sold at Stokes and Sons in Melbourne and would carry that company’s name. This Victoria Police helmet represents an early era in its uniforms, from 1877 to 1947, when the design was based on the English versions. The design was later replaced by head wear that better suited the local climate and conditions. Helmets of a similar shape to this one were worn by the local Volunteer Corps.Policeman’s helmet, Victoria Police. The black, stiffened canvas hat has a high crown and a leather chin strap. The five panels of stiffened canvas are stitched together. The helmet has a metal ventilation dome at the top. The two small holes at the front are for the officer’s identification badge. This merchant navy officer's cap has a black woollen felt hat band, black woollen felt fixed top cap and a black patent leather peak. Along the top of the peak there is a black patent strap. At the left hand of the peaked cap is a non-standard black plastic button and on the right side is a standard black cloth button. Above the peak there is a black wool badge of an Officer of the Merchant Navy. This insignia has a central, oval reserve of red velvet edged with gold metal coil with base metal anchor at the centre. The oval is surrounded by oak leaves of gold purl with stems of applied gold coil, and surrounded by a stamped base metal crown. The badge is backed with a wool blend fabric and attached to the top cat by brown cotton. Along the base of the hat band there is a bias hem. Inside the cap, the hat band is lined with hessian. This informally posed photo was taken in front of the old grandstand at Mortlake's recreation (football) oval. It shows 17 troopers in uniform, holding rifles. There are 7 horses, one trooper is mounted. All wear an early version of the slouch hat. An interested group of mainly boys and a few men, including a policeman, watch from the grandstand. Shows early preparation for national defence or conflict, at a local level. Britain had withdrawn its defence forces from the colonies in 1870, so the States had to provide their own. District defence groups were common at this time, meeting regularly for training. This un-named and un-dated photo appears to be a local (Mortlake) unit of the Victorian Mounted Rifles c. 1885,[A local expert on weaponry believes they are from the 'Victorian Rangers' judging from their rifles.] They were precursors of the Light Horse regiments of the Boer and First World Wars. This brand of starch was first manufactured in 1914, during the First World War, and continued to cover the other wars and military conflicts that followed. It was a time when Australian made was important due to the limited supplies coming from England and Europe. This was a period when the demand for "home grown" produce was at its peak. This was in a time when by necessity not by the "Buy Australian" campaign (of later years) which was the major factor for the demand of goods. It was in a time when starch was used in formal clothing to put a "crisp" or fresh new appearance for clothes. The important social more of "clothes make the person" was in vogue.This box which once contained starch powder is very significant to a rural semi isolated region because it clearly demonstrates that the social mores of the city were also entrenched into the rural population. The fashion of the day, even in remote areas, especially rural, were still a requirement to be maintained on certain special occasions. Cleanliness and stiff "upper lip" persona were just as important in the rural sector as in city and Government circles. Institutions such as hospitals, Government Offices and the legal personnel were bound by the fashion of the starch appearance (no dirt sticks to a personage with the "starch" look). Appearances, especially the first ones, were the judgmental image that remained in the uppermost regions of the viewer. This box with white writing and a "formally clad" man on a navy blue background held Australian grown maize based starch powder(1 LB gross). The package is made from 200 gsm thick cardboard. As production was made during the two World Wars 1914 to 1945 the promotion was heavily focused on Australian made and Australian grown maize.The same cover both front and back, "DANDY" below this a figure outlined in white on a navy blue background "hat and tails" outfit. This is a complete uniform of the Warrnambool Urban Fire Brigade in the mid 20th century. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade, located today in Mortlake Road, Warrnambool, was established in 1863. The formation was prompted by a fire at the Flying Buck Hotel in Liebig Street. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade has a long proud history of service to the people of Warrnambool and district for over 150 years. The uniform belonged to John (Jack) Sizeland, a firefighter for over 37 years. He retired in 1977. This uniform is of some significance as it shows the type of uniform worn by Warrnambool firefighters in the mid 20th century. It is also of importance because it belonged to a local firefighter, Jack Sizeland. This is a Warrnambool Fire Brigade uniform consisting of:- .1 A black cloth single-breasted jacket lined with black and white material. It has four silver metal buttons down the front and two on the top pocket lapels. The buttons have the inscription ‘Country Fire Authority Victoria’. There are two red and black cloth tabs stitched on the top of the sleeves (‘Warrnambool Urban Fire Brigade’). Bernard joined the RAAF as an Airmen was trained and employed as a Clerk Supply (CLKSPL) between 1996 - 1977. He undertook officer cadet training at the Army Officer Cadet School in 1978 and was commissioned into the Ground Defence Category on the 09 December 1978, where he served for 18 years and rose to the rank of SQNLDR. As an historic army uniform with an association to Victoria this item is of local historic and social significance. It is also in very good condition. Woolen khaki peaked hat has a central head band with solid peak connected to the lower front of the head band. The top is high at the front and protrudes out from the headband about 3cm on all sides. There is a brown leather chinstrap on the lower front of the headband above the peak and this has a slide extension that can be enlarged to go under the neck to keep the hat in position in high winds. The chin strap in connected to the headband with two plastic button that have queens crown above a map of Australia. Affixed to the front of the headband above the peak is the Artillery Corps metal hat badge in gold colouring. The interior of the top of the hat has a cotton lining under the woollen exterior and then a plastic protective lining to avoid sweat bleeding onto the exterior.
