Photograph of X1 461 at the Ballarat Road terminus with the driver turning the trolley pole. The tram has a "Pay as you enter sign" sign. The driver who drove the tram one man collecting fares has a summer jacket on and is carrying the ticket bag without a ticket wallet - Fare Box tram. All fares were 2 1/2d or 2d tickets sold in lots of six tickets. See item 876 Sections and Fares Book. The driver's trousers do not appear to have a red seem. The tram carried Fare Boxes 9/1930 to 6/1936. The MMTB Timetable details the trips from Elsternwick or Point Ormond for each day of the week. The sheet records the time of the last tram, 1036pm, driver G Loft No. 2480, and the tram as X2 677 on 22-10-1960. The donor advised that the MMTB following the practice adopted for the Bourke St changeover in 1940, the MMTB chose to pull the tram service before the last advertised trip for the day. Those present to ride the last started early and rode up and down for quite a few runs, then, on one arrival at Elsternwick Station, the Inspector (known as grasshoppers or Braids) on board instructed the driver to keep going and we rode through to GH Depot without paying another fare. They noted a half-cab bus, destination 'Clifton Hill', lurking ready to take up the running. The donor reported (and as you will see from the endorsements on the timetable) “I circled the time of the last run and got the signature and badge number of the driver. The Victorian Railways continued to operate a bus service along the former Black Rock - Sandringham line, long after the tram line closed. The Brighton - St Kilda Bus lines could issue tickets, as an agent, from St Kilda Railway Station to Melbourne on behalf of the Victorian Railways. These dated tickets represent a sample of these. A group of tickets would be issued to each driver for the day who would issue them in order from his ticket tray or kit. Following the closure of the St Kilda Brighton Electric Street Railway (tramway), the Victorian Railways continued to sell through rail and bus tickets from Flinders St Station. When Australia changed from imperial currency to decimal currency on 14/2/1966, a well-planned operation of conversion took place. This involved changing public transport tickets as well, especially those where a printed value was shown. The MMTB printed dual currency tickets as part of the process. Passengers could often transfer from one service to another - eg changing from a tram to a bus, without having to pay a second fare. A transfer ticket would be issued on request and this along with the original fare ticket would be shown to the conductor or bus driver at the time of transfer. Check tickets would be issued by a conductor to record that the person had shown a periodical eg scholars ticket. This enabled passenger counting as well. VFL Park did not have a formal public transport service and this was one reason for its demise. See the reference for its history. Public transport - buses were provided from a number of railway stations. This block of tickets - blue ink on off-white paper consisted of two hundred tickets - VFL Park - Concession - Single Journey - $1. Ticket number in red ink.
