He was a former client of Michael Ryan and had received a Supreme Court order to pay $1300 legal fees. Besides sizeable legal fees he had already paid and the loss of $200,000. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. Military Service Certificate, 1919
Many families at this time obtained and framed these military service certificates. This was part of the empire spirit of 1914. The prose at the top of the certificate is a quote from Act 5 scene 7 of William Shakespeare's "King John".Black and white certificate commemorating the war service of former WHS student Lt. Steel. A number of symbolic images including two men or horseback, a queen, a broken cart, a portrait surrounded by flags and lions and three rifles surround an photograph of Lt. Steel. Bordering the photograph is a modified Australian Government symbol, a laurel wreath, the Australian and British flags and two crossed rifles. Above the Portrait is a FOR KING AND EMPIRE banner and a quote from 'King John', and below is Lt. One worn TB uniform clothing buttons donated by a former Ballarat Tram driver. Button about 23 diameter, with TB crest, with backing piece and lug for sewing on rear. Nickel plated silver? Badge has been worn on a jacket as in poor condition compared to new. Has name of manufacturer stamped on rear part - "Buttons Ltd" of Birmingham, England with their trade mark, a pair of fully opened scissors. See tm1762i2 for image. The file contains detailed histories and a large number of annotated photocopied photographs of the house and garden. Most of the items were compiled and donated by Veronica Coudou, a descendant of the Syme family. The main 10-page [copyrighted] manuscript by Coudou covers the period 1863-1908 and describes the buildings, gardens and the owners. These items are undated. This photo was taken prior to the building of the replica Police Station to serve as a lunch room. The origional timber weatherboard building had been relocated around the rear of the residence years earlier but had since been demolished due to termite infestation.
