The date is approximate.Black and white photo of a large eucalyptus tree which appears to have had its canopy pruned. A woman in a cloche hat, identified as Mrs Mabel Carter, is leaning against it as if reading. In the background is a paling fence, beyond which is a weatherboard house and (?) a later brick house. The area between the foreground and the paling fence is roughly grassed without a footpath. About 10 feet up the trunk of the tree a wooden sign can just be distinguished. This is the street sign for Everton Grove. Norman and Mabel Carter lived at 21 Everton Grove. Norman took many photos of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert from the 1920s, in particular of events and activities of the Church of England.everton grove, trees, norman brodley carter, mrs mabel annie carter, miss mabel annie moore -

Equipment - Chair from Bob Hymans' Alpine Chairlift, 1957
Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today. This chair is significant because it is the last chair from the first chairlift ever constructed in Australia. This is the last known chair of the Alpine Chairlift built in 1957 and deconstructed in 1961. It was built by Bob Hymans from recycled SEC Poles. The chairlift had 40 chairs on the 390 metre trip to the top. It carried its first passengers on 21 July 1957. Available to all visitors, the lower end of the lift was about 90 metres above the Upper Kiewa Road and it ascended 120 vertical metres to the top terminal above the race-line. The forty chairs transported skiers continuously at a speed of 1.5 metres per second, the upward trip taking just over four minutes. Each chair has a safety bar above the rider's knees.bob hymans, australia's first chairlift, alpine chairlift -

Although the route is close to Fitzsimons Lane it will follow streets and paths that may not be familiar to many local residents. It will include commentary on the history of this corner of the Town of Eltham. This walk on Saturday 2nd July will follow a “there and back” route, that is returning over much the same course. It is about 2.5 km in length and will take 2 to 2.5 hours. It includes some hills. It will start at 2pm at the corner of Bolton Street and Old Eltham Road (Melway ref.21 F10).Born Digitalelection day, heritage excursion, activities, eltham district historical society, fitzsimons lane, mini -

A walk around Little Eltham, 21 June 2017. Eltham’s first industrial area at the end of present day Pitt Street near the Diamond Creek. Just upstream a bit, near these oak trees was the flour mill. The most significant owner of that was Henry Dendy. Better known for founding Brighton but he lived in Eltham longer than he lived in Brighton, during the 1860s. There was also the brewery and slightly downsteam from here was the tannery. The brewery needed fresh clean water so it was upstream from the tannery. The Oak trees were most likely planted during Henry Dendy's time. Decorative object - Ship model in a bottle, c. early 20th century
The handmade model in a bottle is the work of a hobbyist, in about the mid-20th century. The word 'Cork" may indicate the location of the maker. The Pamir was a four-masted barque built for the German shipping company F. Laeisz. One of their famous Flying P-Liners, she was the last commercial sailing ship to round Cape Horn, in 1949. By 1957, she had been outmoded by modern bulk carriers and could not operate at a profit. Her shipping consortium's inability to finance much-needed repairs or to recruit sufficient sail-trained officers caused severe technical difficulties. On 21 September 1957, she was caught in Hurricane Carrie and sank off the Azores, with only six survivors rescued after an extensive search. The model represents the work of an individual as a hobby project in the early to mid-20th century.Ship in bottle.
