Decorative object - Conestoga Wagon, Mr Chas W Davis, Unknown
The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. This model of a horse drawn Canestoga Wagon replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public during the 1880's. A model of a long covered Conestoga Wagon with two horses, brown and tan. The cream fabric covers curved shaped metal bands and is laced with string around the base to attach it to the wagon. It has a green base, green wooden seat and footrest. There are two wooden barrels attached by wire on one side and the other side has a luggage box. It has two small gold painted spoked wheels with painted black tyres at the front and two larger ones at the back. The forerunner of the Conestoga Wagon had its origin in Europe as a mobile home for shepherds and nomads in the early 1800's. The east coast of America became home to people from all over Western Europe so the old wagon designs were carried to the New World. The wagons were named after a river in Lancaster County Pennsylvania where the Stutz family built them for the western treks of history. Fondly known as the 'Prairie Schooner', the cost in 1840 was $48.00, unpainted spare wheels $8.00, Lawson axles $12.00. They came in 12 and 14 feet beds.replicas, models, scale models, vehicles, carriages, horse drawn vehicles, toy horses, drays -

Photographs - Demolition of the old Tawonga District General Hospital. Set of 8 colour photographs
In the early stages of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme the State Electricity Commission took over the financial and construction responsibility of the Tawonga District General Hospital building at a cost of 27,000 pounds. This included the removal and re-erection of the ex-military Bonegilla ward from Wodonga while in addition they carried out all the necessary building works that allowed the hospital to operate as a functional unit. The work was completed and handed over to the Hospital Committee of Management on September 1, 1949. Local residents raised 3,400 pounds through fund raising. The balance was met by the SEC and the Hospital and Charities Commission. The initial project was to provide for a basic temporary hospital which was later to include an Operating Theatre, Offices, Store, Mortuary and a Nurse’s Home, until the establishment of a permanent medical premises. Following the opening, 455 patients were admitted to the Tawonga District General Hospital and 254 operations were performed in the first year. The hospital relocated to Mount Beauty in the former SEC administration offices located in the town centre. Official opening of the 18 bed Tawonga District General Hospital on April 29 in 1961. The old weatherboard building was demolished around the late 1900’s to early 2000’s and replaced with a new modern brick building. Alpine Health CEO Mr Lyndon Seys oversaw the opening of the new Mount Beauty Hospital in November 2001 alongside Board of Management President Mr Andrew Randell, other board members and politicians. The Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme the State Electricity Commission played a pivotal part in the planning and initial funding of the Tawonga District General Hospital, with a view to providing medical support for its many workers on the Hydro scheme. Later, spouse and family members of workers were also able to access medical assistance The hospital was originally located in Tawonga away from the majority of the patients as the Hospital and Charities Board was not prepared to have it within the SEC controlled area and it was not until the gate at Tawonga South was taken down that the hospital was moved to the main centre of population at Mount Beauty.8 Colour photographs of the demolition of the original Tawonga and District Hospital situated in Mt Beauty circa 20001. hair clips, 1930's
This clip was not made to be worn in the hair, it was made to create fingercurls, a style of hairdo very popular in the 1920's and 1930's. The 1920's and 30's saw new simple hairstyles. The hair was often short and cut into a bob shape and then curled or more commonly ornamented with fingerwaves. the children came in. These hairclips were used to hold the curl in place as the hair dried. These items are examples of women's hair accessories commonly used in the mid 20th century. Two metal butterfly clips for waving hair. Book, Australia in the War of 1939-1945 The Island Campaigns
This item is from the ‘Pattison Collection’, a collection of books and records that was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute, which was founded in Warrnambool in 1853. By 1886 the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute (WMI) had grown to have a Library, Museum and Fine Arts Gallery, with a collection of “… choice productions of art, and valuable specimens in almost every branch and many wonderful national curiosities are now to be seen there, including historic relics of the town and district.” It later included a School of Design. Although it was very well patronised, the lack of financial support led the WMI in 1911 to ask the City Council to take it over. In 1935 Ralph Pattison was appointed as City Librarian to establish and organise the Warrnambool Library as it was then called. When the WMI building was pulled down in 1963 a new civic building was erected on the site and the new Warrnambool Library, on behalf of the City Council, took over all the holdings of the WMI. At this time some of the items were separated and identified as the ‘Pattison Collection’, named after Ralph Pattison. Eventually the components of the WMI were distributed from the Warrnambool Library to various places, including the Art Gallery, Historical Society and Flagstaff Hill. Later some were even distributed to other regional branches of Corangamite Regional Library and passed to and fro. It is difficult now to trace just where all of the items have ended up. The books at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village generally display stamps and markings from Pattison as well as a variety of other institutions including the Mechanics’ Institute itself. RALPH ERIC PATTISON Ralph Eric Pattison was born in Rockhampton, Queensland, in 1891. He married Maude Swan from Warrnambool in 1920 and they set up home in Warrnambool. In 1935 Pattison accepted a position as City Librarian for the Warrnambool City Council. His huge challenge was to make a functional library within two rooms of the Mechanics’ Institute. He tirelessly cleaned, cleared and sorted a disarrayed collection of old books, jars of preserved specimens and other items reserved for exhibition in the city’s museum. He developed and updated the library with a wide variety of books for all tastes, including reference books for students; a difficult task to fulfil during the years following the Depression. He converted all of the lower area of the building into a library, reference room and reading room for members and the public. The books were sorted and stored using a cataloguing and card index system that he had developed himself. He also prepared the upper floor of the building and established the Art Gallery and later the Museum, a place to exhibit the many old relics that had been stored for years for this purpose. One of the treasures he found was a beautiful ancient clock, which he repaired, restored and enjoyed using in his office during the years of his service there. Ralph Pattison was described as “a meticulous gentleman whose punctuality, floorless courtesy and distinctive neat dress were hallmarks of his character, and ‘his’ clock controlled his daily routine, and his opening and closing of the library’s large heavy doors to the minute.” Pattison took leave during 1942 to 1945 to serve in the Royal Australian Navy, Volunteer Reserve as Lieutenant. A few years later he converted one of the Museum’s rooms into a Children’s Library, stocking it with suitable books for the younger generation. This was an instant success. In the 1950’s he had the honour of being appointed to the Victorian Library Board and received more inspiration from the monthly conferences in Melbourne. He was sadly retired in 1959 after over 23 years of service, due to the fact that he had gone over the working age of council officers. However he continued to take a very keen interest in the continual development of the Library until his death in 1969. The Pattison Collection, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute Collection is primarily significant in its totality, rather than for the individual objects it contains. Its contents are highly representative of the development of Mechanics' Institute libraries across Australia, particularly Victoria. A diversity of publications and themes has been amassed, and these provide clues to our understanding of the nature of and changes in the reading habits of Victorians from the 1850s to the middle of the 20th century. The collection also highlights the Warrnambool community’s commitment to the Mechanics’ Institute, reading, literacy and learning in the regions, and proves that access to knowledge was not impeded by distance. These items help to provide a more complete picture of our community’s ideals and aspirations. The Warrnambool Mechanics Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and the important role it played in the intellectual, cultural and social development of people throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s publication collection is of both local and state significance. Book - Travel, Thomas Brassey, author et al, Voyages and Travels of Lord Brassey 1862-1894 Vol 1, 1895
The papers gathered for this work, one of two volumes, focus on journeys of Thomas Brassey (1836-1918) who was born and educated in England. They include the period 1862 to 1894, before he accepted the position of Governor of Victori, Australia, in 1895. During that time, he'd won a seat in parliament, which he held for 18 years, and for periods was a civil lord and parliamentary secretary for the Admiralty. He was passionate about the sea and addressed his naval and maritime concerns in public lectures, letters, pamphlets and books. He was also for a time lord-in-waiting to Queen Victoria and president of the Institute of Naval Architects. This book is from Flagstaff Hill's ‘Pattison Collection’, a collection of books and records that was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute, which was founded in Warrnambool in 1853. It was edited by Captain S. Eardley-Wilmot, and published by Longmans, Green and Co. of London. The Longmans, Green and Co. was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. The book is an account of travels from 1862 to 1894 of Lord Thomas Brassey, giving first-hand experiences of 19th century travel. Brassey was a former Governor of Victoria before Australia’s Federation. Brassey was passionate about naval and maritime matters in public and government capacities. The work is important for its connection with the publisher Longmans, Green and Co., of London, a firm that has been established for over two centuries, renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. Textile - Quilt, Mrs Adolphina Noll, Wilmington Wagga, 1934
Made by Adolphina Noll in 1934 in Wilmington, South Australia as a wedding gift for Mr Joe and Mrs Ida (aka 'Ike') Fulwood. Mrs Noll was Ike's maternal grandmother and was 69 when she made the quilt. (It was used on a bed in a plain heavy woven calico cover which was secured with safety pins. The cover is not in existence.) It was given to Lois Densham in Adeleide from Ike, who was a close friend of Lois' sister, Doreen Saunders.Double bed sized quilt cover insert made from several items of clothing: men's frock coat (possibly from the 1900's), another men's coat (date unknown), a woman's coat with a fur trim on the pockets (possibly from the 1930's) and a woman's dress or skirt (circa 1920-30's). The clothing pieces have been arranged in an apparent haphazard way to create a shape with straight edges and corners to fit neatly into a cover onto a bed. Lining materials are apparent on the back of the woman's skirt/dress pieces which may also show that this item of clothing was either taken apart or never finished. Orange cotton lining material is also evident on some pieces of the men's coat.handicrafts, quilting, running stitch group, running stitch collection, highlights of the national wool museum: from waggas to the wool quilt prize - exhibition (22/09/2001 - 02/12/2001), noll, mrs adolphina fulwood, mrs e. g. -

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village
Book - Papers and Addresses, Thomas Brassey, author, Papers and Addresses Mercantile Marine and Navigation from 1871 to 1894, 1894
The papers in this work are focused on Thomas Brassey (1836-1918) who was born and educated in England. They include the period 1871-1894, before he accepted the position of Governor of Victori, Australia, in 1895. Interestingly, the logo in some books, such as “Steam Turbines 2nd edition, published in 1922” has the year “1724” but the logo in books such as “Advanced Agriculture, published in 1894” has the year “1726” in the logo. The book is significant for publishing historical papers and addresses by Lord Thomas Brassey, former Governor of Victoria before Australia’s Federation. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s publication collection is of both local and state significance.Papers and Addresses Mercantile Marine and Navigation from 1871 to 1894 Author: Lord Brassey Arranged and Edited Captain S.
