Five page handwritten letter on light brown or fawn lined paper within a brown envelope within Reg. Item 2488, page 105. The envelope has been glued to the back cover of the book and is address to "Mr. James Inspector / Electric Supply". Seven overseas stamps have been stuck to the envelope. The letter dated 11/10/1937 from an unknown person who lived at 305 Eyre St Ballarat, not signed, outlines the building the horse tram depot in Wendouree Parade. The person put in a quote as the plumber. Notes various aspects of working on the site, materials, difficulties, Thompson and Moore of the Adelaide as the contractors, number of people on the job, problems with the construction, wind damage, building the workers cottages, their rooves and the cash boxes for the conductors. Newspaper clipping contained within Reg. Item 2488, pages 105, titled "Cutting the Ribbon" of Ballaarat Mayor, Cr J. Pryor cutting the ribbon to the open the extension of Lydiard St. North from Gregory St to Norman St or the New Cemetery. Notes the colour of the ribbon, the scissors and the Cr Pryor drove the tram over the extension. Features SEC No. 32 with flags and the SEC Logo over the headlight. ESCo Employee Hours Work Record book that has been used by an ESCo/SEC inspector, H. P. James as a record / note book for his personal collection or papers or journal titled "Out of the Past". Book sewn with string in 36 page sections, blank end papers, board covers with stipple paper out sides and Rexene cloth binding. Comprising plain paper end papers and 104 printed pages (52 leaves), with each sheet printed in black on feint ruled paper for recording the hours worked and other details of drivers and conductors employed by ESCo. Printed for daily use, with Day and date page headings - made out for the 1930's. Images: Book - i1 Inside front cover - i2 Members Certificate - i3 Has been used to gather mementos such as photos, articles, newspaper clippings, letters and other miscellaneous documents on Ballarat local history. Newspaper cuttings etc often have side notes written by Mr. James. Inside front cover has certificate recording Mr. James membership to the Ballarat Historical Society for 1940. Receipt signed by Edward Crimmins. Also a newspaper cutting on the cost of pensions to Lord Nelson's family. On facing page a photo of Queen Elizabeth, a printer colour cover or sheet about Walt Disney's "Pinocchio", a newspaper cutting regarding Father's Day and a black and white photograph of a young girl in a hospital carriage being pushed by a man. Pages numbered odd numbers only in the top right hand corner in pencil. Primary items are: 1 - Coloured cover to a writing tablet, titled "Australian Birds". Handwritten notes in pencil noting the time of the photograph, the tram weight, couplings, lamp brackets, the possible purpose of the photograph, the incompleteness of the tram when compared to actual running condition. Certificate contained within Reg. Item 2526, page 8 titled "Public Inoculation Depot / Pneumonic Influenza". Printed form on paper with perforated left hand edge, to record the H.P. James of ESCo had received the two injections for the Spanish Influenza outbreak of 1919. Formed signed by Geo. F. Morton as Acting Town Clerk. Has been stamped that the second injection had been received. The required date for the 2nd injection was 4/2/1919. H.P. James refers to the outbreak in the item on the retirement of Bob Haines (Reg. Item 2529), and notes he was the "Dispenser-Inspector" of two quinine powders to each man and that they had to wear gauze masks. S Note Item Not formally Numbered. Newspaper clippings contained within Reg. Item 2526, page 11 and 12. Cutting on page 11 titled "Lament and Reverie on Passing of Melbourne's Cable Trams", written "By a Former Traveller", with date of 26-10-1940 in blue pence. Notes that the person was glad not to know of the last run of the Melbourne cable trams, the previous Saturday. Laments their passing, rides, crews, St. Kilda Road, the tramcars and the services provided. At the base of the cutting has a photograph of cable trailer No. 1 being off loaded in Lonsdale St. to go into the Museum. Cutting on page 12, titled "Cable Trams .... Clang Into History" written by Hugh Murphy. Appears to have been written prior to their withdrawal in Melbourne but noting their closure at the end of the year. Ticket contained within Reg. Item 2526, page 58, ESCo, Ballarat Tramways, Lunch Hour Weekly Ticket, price 1/6, printed for Week 4, that is not available for Sundays or Holidays. Ticket printed on light weight card, in two colours, dark yellow and light brown, numbered 4267, for specific use between the Orphanage (Victoria St) and Doveton St. Notes the conditions of use, the time available for which the ticket may be used. Ticket has been punched or nipped four times and shows that it was stapled to a block. Printed by J.J. Miller, Melbourne. Note Item Not formally Numbered. Ticket contained within Reg. Item 2526, page 58, SECV - Ballarat Tourist Ticket - 1/- on light weight card, white colour - punched for October 5, 1939, for use in Ballarat. Has three conductor's punches in the right hand margin of the ticket. Has numbers "1" to "31" on bottom section of the ticket. On rear has year and month of use.
