Hellfire Corner was a junction in the Ypres Salient in the First World War. The main supplies for the British Army in this sector passed along the road from Ypres to Menin - the famous Menin Road. A section of the road was where the Sint-Jan-Zillebeke road and the Ypres-Roulers railway line crossed the road. The Rats of Tobruk Association, Inc, Victoria was formed in September, 1945. The Association was open for those Servicemen who had Served at, and during, the Longest Siege in British Military History - the Siege of Tobruk - 240 Days, between April10th and December 10th 1941 in WW2 and who were fortunate enough to return to Australia at the end of hostilities. Of approximately 14,000 Australians involved in the Siege of Tobruk, 559 were KIA, 2450 were WIA and 941 became a POW. Formed in 1885, Victorian Mounted Rifles companies were recruited in rural centres, including Wangaratta. Members of country rifle clubs formed a significant component. They were semi-professional: only a small allowance was paid to members. Mounted Riflemen were required to provide their own mount. Not to be confused with similarly named contingents to the Boer War. He established a large sheep property and built a notable large Georgian style home which still stands in the town of Bacchus Marsh today. From shortly after his arrival the area became known to the colonists as Bacchus's Marsh, and was later officiaslly named 'Bacchus Marsh' in his memory.Small framed painting of William Henry Bacchus. The light horse shoe carry pouch is not from World War 1, but is a later manufacture. British Universal Pattern(UP) 1902 as worn by horses in the Australian light horse, artillery, and horse drawn transport between circa 1902 and 1942. Alex's grandmother used it in 1942 to make button holes.Historical: Type of machine used by S.E.C.V. wives living in Mt Beauty in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. The Percy Uebergang family lived at Tooram Park, Allansford from 1912 until 1992. Percy and Myrtle Uebergang's children were twins, Ray and Joyce born in 1926 who lived at Tooram Park until their deaths, Ray in 1986 and Joyce in 1992. Neither Ray nor Joyce married and following the death of her brother Joyce set up the Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation which supports the local community. This advertising mobile is part of the collection of items given into the care of the Cheese World Museum. The van Nooten family purchased the neighbouring property Tooram from the Neale family. Albert E. WILLIAMS (1899-1986) Born Victoria, Australia Albert Edward Williams was among the first to undertake the five-year, Technical Art Teacher’s Certificate (TATC) at the Ballarat Technical Art School in 1915, with work placement at the Ballarat Lithographic company. Williams taught for several years before he was selected to undertake further teacher training at the Working Men’s College, Melbourne, in 1926. He returned to teach at Ballarat in 1928, facilitating many student activities, while pursuing the arduous Art Teacher’s Certificate. From its inception in 1914, it was 30 years before the first candidate achieved the certificate’s exhaustive requirements. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. This set of 10 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s victorious rifle shooting team was taken outside the Tavern at Fortuna, Bendigo in c1979. The rifle shooting competition was the ‘Irwin Trophy for Shooting’, a contest with the British Army’s 42nd Engineer Regiment, the equivalent military geographic mapping unit at the time to the Army Survey Regiment. The bent .303 rifle seen in photo .3P was retrieved from the bottom of Fortuna’s lake when it was drained for restoration. It is believed an excavator drove over the rifle before it was retrieved.This set of 10 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s rifle shooting team was taken at Fortuna, Bendigo in c1979. The Australian Red Cross was established in 1914 as part of the British Red Cross and the Warrnambool branch was established in the same year. The local Warrnambool branch volunteers were mainly women who held sewing meetings, organized parcels for the soldiers abroad during World War One, undertook First Aid courses to be of assistance in hospitals and raised funds for the Red Cross, especially the local branch and the Melbourne branch. This badge would have been sold as part of the1916 fund-raising campaign.This badge is of particular interest as a badge connected to the Warrnambool Red Cross in World War One and presumably sold to raise funds for the local branch of the Red Cross. These medals were struck to commemorate the feat of Colonel Baden Powell who, with his troops, defended the town of Mafeking in South Africa during the Boer War for 217 days. Robert Baden Powell (1857-1941) was a British Army officer who served in India and Africa from 1876 to 1910. In 1907 he founded the Boy Scout movement, now an international organization for boys and with his sister Agnes, founded the Girl Guide movement, also now internationally established.These medals are of local interest as they commemorate Colonel Baden Powell’s heroics in defending in 1899-1900 the town of Mafeking in South Africa during the Boer War. Civilian Registration Identity Card issued to Ernest Thomas Orford of Irvines Road, Eltham, farmer, signed by subject and witnessed by Elizabeth J. Cox of Eltham. This type of card was issued to British subjects who were civilians. During World War II everyone in Australia was issued with a personal identity card and was required to report changes of address to the government. Menin Gate at Midnight (also known as Ghosts of Menin Gate) is a 1927 painting by Australian artist Will Longstaff. The painting depicts a host of ghostly soldiers marching across a field in front of the Menin Gate war memorial. Longstaff painted the work after attending the unveiling of the Menin Gate memorial, at Ypres in Belgium, on 24 July 1927. The memorial commemorated those men of the British Empire, including Australia, who died in the battles of the First World War around the town. The painting is part of the collection of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. It was purchased by Lord Woolavington for 2,000 Guineas and presented to the Australian government.[1] After a royal command viewing for George V and the Royal family at Buckingham Palace, the painting was displayed in Manchester and Glasgow. It was then taken around Australia, where record crowds paid to view the work. The majority of parents within the Kiewa Valley, had a slight resentment of the "high and mighty" attitude of city dwellers with a "plum in their mouths" and the effectiveness of city bred teachers was to overcome these ingrained mores. The mentioning of European nations and lifestyles was to the pupils in the infant schools far more like "fairyland" than the realism that they experienced on the "land". However at this age level fantasy was more important than reality. Hamilton Hill (Harold Hill 1858- July 1910) was a baritone singer born in Bendigo. In 1897 he was a member of Mr Bracy's Opera Company. In 1899 he left for San Francisco and then onto London in 1910. He began recording on both cylinders and discs in London in 1903 (as such he was the first Australian to make recordings for a mass audience). He toured extensively in Britain and the US, with occasional return tours to Australia.
