The Australasian Wood Duck is commonly described as 'goose-like' in appearance. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century.This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. Photograph shows Hawthorn Tramways Trust bogie Tram 15 at Glenferrie and Riversdale Roads 1916-1920. The tram body was built by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide and entered service during April 1916. It was renumbered N class 121 by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board following the absorption of the Trusts by the MMTB in 1920. The tram is eastbound in Riversdale Road. The tracks of the Prahran and Malvern Tramway Trust can be seen in front of the tram. The conductor has alighted from the tram and walked forward to check for trams on Glenferrie Road. A Fire Brigade street fire alarm can be seen on the corner. The existing connecting curves at the corner were installed in 1925. The tramcar had a number of significant accidents and was disposed of in March 1938. Understood from the donor, that the house on the corner was known as "Pax" and demolished when commercial development of the corner occurred. The donor's family operated the Purvis Real Estate on the southeast corner from the building now known as Stotts Corner. Label written by Dr Frank Forster documents that this item belonged to Private RP Holbery, who carried the caul as a good luck charm when he served in the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) during WWI. Refer to supplementary file for War Records at Cat no: 34 A caul is a small slightly yellow coloured membrane that can cover the newborn baby's face. After birth, the caul can be removed and laid on a piece of paper to dry. Superstitions regarding cauls are very ancient, and believers in superstition thought that babies born with a caul would never drown. They were traditionally sold to sailors to bring good luck. Lawyers or advocates in the legal profession would buy cauls as they believed it would confer the "gift of the gab". Cauls were also carried by servicemen during the early part of the 20th Century. World War I pushed up the price of cauls. They were often carried in silver cases engraved with commemorative inscriptions. This photograph was taken on the 20th June 2004 as part of an event called "Successful Tree Planting!", organised by the Wooragee Landcare Group. It was addressed to all local residents and landholders in the area and involved practical demonstration of techniques suitable for successful planting of native trees and shrubs, as well as information about weed control. In the photograph are illustrated from left to right the following people: Chris Robinson; Tony Prowse; unknown child; Lesley Finedon; Ann Henderson, unknown. Revegetation can improve the condition of remnant vegetation in the area and provide habitat for local animals. Correct species selection, including all layers of vegetation, along with proper weather conditions and adequate site preparation, can maximise the successful outcome. Printed by the Argus and Australasian Limited in 1948 as a general text book for students. The Argus Newspaper had been printing interesting, informative and instructive articles on various phases of the work in schools every Saturday in their newspaper and the students were expected to cut these articles out and paste them in a convenient form for study and revision. The decision to publish the articles, by the Argus, in one volume was welcomed by the Director of Education, Victoria, J.A. Seitz and stated that it "can be recommended confidently to teachers and pupils."Gives a general overview of a lot of different subjects that students were being taught in the 1940's.It includes such areas as the three layers of government, simple mechanics and electrical theory, nature and general science. Scottish miller and immigrant, John Eadie established his water-driven flour mill on Jacksons Creek in Sunbury in 1861.To make of a sufficient water supply to operate the mill, he built a weir and a water-race to drive it. Some of these can be seen today. The machinery for the mill was bought from Scotland and transported here. The mill continued to operate until 1914. At that time the 20 ton metal wheel and the iron roofing removed to aid the war effort.This mill is one of a number that were built along the water courses in the Sunbury-Bulla area to process the wheat grown in the area.A non-digital black and white photograph in post card format of a an old bluestone mill building sited on the bank of a watercourse in a deep valley with bare hills in the background. This endobronchial tube was invented by Sir Ivan Magill. It can be identified as pre 1948, as from that time on the wire spiral was eliminated from the body of the tubes. Sir Ivan Magill is famous for his involvement in modern anaesthesia. He worked closely alongside plastic surgeon Harold Gillies in the treatment of facial injuries sustained in World War 1. This particular specimen is a brown colour with pale edging to the wing feathers rather than the plumage being a darker black which can help identify this bird as female. The feathers have a white edging on the stomach giving this bird a scaly appearance. The bird has a small dark bill, two glass eyes, black legs and a long tail. Around the front of the upper breast, the bird has a striking white crescent shaped band. This note-pad and holder perhaps belonged to Jessie Bell whose name is written on the first page. There are several entries on the pages and the dates range from 1908 to 1929. The entries include references to a Banquet for Mr J. Duffus, Purnim, 1912, Jack Ross’ Wedding Party, Dennington, 1912, R.J. Jones’ Dance, Woolshed, 1928 and Leila Jenkins’ 21st Birthday Party, 1928. This notebook and holder is of interest because it is an example of the type of appointment book used by the more affluent in the early 20th century. This is a heavily-embossed silver note-pad holder with a hinged lid on the front and clips at the side to hold a pencil. The writing material inside the pencil is missing. The back of the holder has a blank space in the middle where a name can be inscribed. At the top of the holder is a ring, holding a chain with an ornamented clip at the end. This enables the holder and pad to be hooked over a belt or lapel. Inside the holder are fifty paper pages on which to write appointments or notes. The pages are gilt-paged. This is a photograph of a painting by the noted artist George Webb (1861-1949). Webb was best known for his portraits of civic dignitaries in Melbourne and Adelaide but he also produced many landscapes and seascapes. Some of these feature Warrnambool landmarks as he married, in the late 1890s, Christina Lake, the step-daughter of George Rolfe who owned the property known as ‘Lyndoch’, near the mouth of the Hopkins River. Webb painted the early cottages at ‘Old Lyndoch’ using a photograph taken some time earlier. The painting was given to Dick Allan, the chauffeur in the employ of Florence Lake, Christina’s sister. Florence Lake owned and resided at Lyndoch after her parents’ death. Dick Allan’s son, living in Tasmania, acquired the painting and Les O’Callaghan obtained the photograph of the painting from him. Although this is only a photograph of an original painting, it is of some considerable importance as the painting has great historical significance and this is the only representation we have of it. The man in the photograph represents George Rolfe and the story of Rolfe and his ownership and development of the property of Lyndoch is an important one in Warrnambool’s history. The original by George Webb is also an important work of art in its own right.This is a colour photograph of a painting. The photograph is in on old frame which has two wooden edgings with the outer one having an ornate gold plaster edging and an inner one with a gold velvet insert next to the glass. The ornate gold plaster has a piece missing near the top left hand corner. The photograph is set into a gold-coloured wooden frame inside the glass. The photograph is mounted onto cardboard and covered with cardboard at the back with a small piece of wood attached (from the original frame).
