'The 'United Devonshire' - New Chum Line of Reef'. Situated in the Devonshire Valley immediately south of Victoria St, Eaglehawk. Was the leading mine in the field in the years 1883-4 and 1885 during which time it produced 65,898 oz of gold and paid $(?)399,800 in dividends. This mine was then situated on what in January, 1902, became the West Shaft. The Company was then amalgamated with the 'Princess Alexandra' (approx 100 yds further east) which then became the Main Shaft of the 'United Devonshire'. All typed on paper and glued to back of image. Handwritten notes and carbon copy titled Question 5. Notes refer to Victoria Hill being opended up by Theodore Ballerstedt and his son early in 1854. Theodore Ballerstedt left for Germany having sold his home, crushing battery and mine to Mr Geo Lansell. He called the mine the '180'. Next mine north to the '180' was the Victoria Quartz. Tool - BENDIGO ELECTRONIC COMPANY SCALEBUOY, 1940-1950's
Scalebuoy. Invented by Hartley Abbott & patented under the name of the Bendigo Electronic Company, made in various sizes & for different applications, such as to prevent scaling in the boilers at mines. Made up of a sealed glass bulb containing mercury and gasses enclosed within a chromed wire cage & with a chromed handle. The one shown being a hand held shaker model. Scalebuoy sent to Alan from work colleague, Pat Curran in Tasmania. Pat Curran was working as the CEO of a retirement village and found the scalebuoys in the equipment there. Bottom, 'Casey & Wenborn's Print Forbes & Holmes, Agents',' Office Battery House Main Shaft',' The famous Quartz Claim covers on area of 24 acres, and has six shafts which represent 4000 feet of sinking; there are no less than 13 level and 16 crosscuts, giving a total of 12,000 feet in length. The total amount expended in labour by this Company £228,000. The Quartz raised amounts to 144,500 tons, and it has yielded 188,000 oz's of gold. The amount paid in dividends is £585,600 being nearly £20 per share, employment is given to nearly 200 men. It is stated that this rich mine changed hands in early days for the small sum of £30.'. 'Applications and allotment of 12,000 new shares, containing lists of shareholders for The Central Deborah Gold Mine as at 15th January 1948, contains information regarding applications for shares, transaction details of what was sold, cost and allocated to list of people who they were sold to'. A3 lined paper, hand written with names of each purchaser and balances of each transactions. Blue & white forms printed as contracts of applications to the directors of the company to state who the owners of the shares were and receipt of payments. Forms state the issue of release of 12,000 contributing shares of 1 pound each per share which were submitted by shareholders desiring to exercise their quota rights.
