Music boxes have been around at least since the end of the 18th century. The finest artisans in Europe created them and brought music into family homes when there were really no other types of music entertainment for homes. Music boxes performed the popular music of their day; songs from the opera, traditional songs, and hymns.The Nicole Freres were regarded as the best maker of cylinder music boxes during the mid 1800s. This is a fine example of a 19th century music box.Small wooden music box operated by winding a key which moves a studded cylinder against a comb of tuned teeth. The Fanning Family home, 'Sunnyside', was built in Loemans Road after William Patrick Fanning migrated from Thurles, Co Tipperary, Ireland. He was one of the early farmers in Bulla. He and his wife, Catherine had five children. Since he and his wife died their descendants continued to live at 'Sunnyside' in Bulla. Saint Joseph’s Convent Patrick Street once the family home of the Kinsella family. The house was built in 1900 by architect M. Ryan and building contractor A. J. Barnes for Thomas Kinsella who occupied the home till he died in 1902. The Kinsella family later sold the house to the Catholic Church and was occupied by the Sisters of St Joseph. 3 Black & White photographs of a brick home with slate roof. This book of poetry was written by war poet, Violet Bertha Cramer. It is a record of an Australian civilian woman’s perspective on war. The initials are G. K. Cameron, for Grace Kerr Cameron - Grace Charlotte Kerr Cameron. She was the twin daughter of James Cameron and Jane (Jean) Moffat. Her twin sister was Agnes Helen (Nell) Cameron, and her one brother was Harry Purchase Cameron (Roma Smith's father). Another brother Archibald Peter CAMERON, died aged 7. There is a family photo of Mrs Jane Cameron and the twins in the garden of the family home "Carinya". Grace and Nell lived in the family home following the death of their parents. Grace and Nell both died in 1940, then Roma and Ron SMITH lived at "Carinya" after their marriage in 1944. Lorraine and Peter COULTON's home is now on the site. (information from John Phillips and Margaret Smith). There was a lot of material written by Australian civilian women during the First World War. Violet B. Cramer was one poet who contributed to a valuable record of Australian civilian women’s perspectives on war. Mrs Nesta Drew is a longtime resident of Tawonga having operated a dairy farm with her family on the Kiewa Valley Highway in Tawonga. She grew up in the area and attending local schools and raised her own family there, until selling up the family home and moving into an aged care facility in recent years. Some of her family still reside in the local area. Mrs Drew is a well known community figure in the Tawonga area with links to many social and family groups. She has a very strong historical connection to Tawonga and has been a reliable source of anecdotal local historical knowledge. Miss Jean Partington (1903-1992) was Headmistress at Preston Girls’ School. She lived in the family home at 25 Hailes Street until it was demolished for Greensborough Plaza. This item comes from the estate of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie and contains a clear photograph of their family home, Aroona (19 Princess Street, Warrnambool). Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. This calendar is of interest as it contains a photograph of Aroona, the early 20th century residence of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie. The photograph is at least 54 years old and so has historic significance, especially for local researchers.This is a piece of lightweight cream-coloured cardboard with a calendar for the year 1954 printed in blue on the bottom half of the sheet and some blue decorative patterns around the calendar. The top half of the sheet has a black and white photograph of a house inserted in slots with a blue border around the photograph. This Ockanui Hollow Plywood Surfboard was shaped by Peter Watson and his father at their family home in Murrumbeena in 1959 (Peter was aged 16 at the time). The surfboard was based on a series of full size plans purchased from the USA. The surfboard is made from marine ply, ureal/resorcinal glue, marine varnish, copper nails, the skeg (fin) is Huon Pine made from an old kitchen sink drain board.This surfboard is an excellent example of the type of hollow wooden surfboards being made in the USA and Australia in 1959. A picnic organised on the first of January 1928 on the grounds of the Duckett family home, Riversdale in Hawthorn. (See Jottings 90, January 1928) Mr Duckett , an ironmaster and manufacturer. In 2017 a link with a Mrs Marjorie Duckett (nee Mclennan) in the late 20th C confirmed her role as secretary of the Altona Op Shop which provided funds to the Mission in the late 20th C.
