In the link above there is also reference to airborne lifeboats. It seems that the Austin 8HP so-called lifeboat motor was very often re-used by boating enthusiasts which would account for the publication or e-issue? of this manual in 1986. Built in 1889. Was known as 'Willcyrus' during the occupancy of Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) William McGregor Cairncross and family. It was named after two of his sons - Sergeant William McGregor Cairncross and Trooper Cyrus Hay Cairncross, who served with the 2nd Scottish Horse during the Boer War and in British units in the First World War. Lt Col Cairncross served at the Victoria Barracks in Melbourne for 25 years. During the Boer War he was controller of stores at Victoria Barracks. It was renamed 'Medlow' when it became the home of Dr Richard Joseph Bull (1874-1927) and his wife Catherine Grace, nee Perrier (1884-1972) in 1911. Richard Joseph Bull was the Director of Bacteriology at Melbourne University. Norma was a noted artist and was born in Hawthorn in 1906; her brother Ronald Richard was born in Surrey Hills in 1912. Fundraising events were held there during the First World War. Abel Hoyle Turton was born in 1877 and married Hannah Richardson of Barnawartha, Victoria in 1902. He established a wheelwright and coach making business. Mr. Turton also operated a blacksmith business as a side trade. In his earlier years he was actively involved in the fire brigade, including as Secretary, and on the committee of the Wodonga Brass Band. Mr. Turton also served as secretary of the local branch of the Australian Natives Association. In 1912, despite having received a long service medal for the Wodonga Fire Brigade, Turton resigned for the brigade under a cloud after having been accused of insubordination at a fire. The brigade captain Mr. Twomey also resigned. They were both later reinstated. He died in Wodonga on 24 December 1932. After a quiet period, interest in bookplates in Australia began to increase in the early 1970s, Entrepreneurial art and book collectors such as Edwin Jewell and others commissioned multiple Bookplate designs from a range of well known fine artists. At a 1997 meeting in Melbourne of the Ephemera Society of Australia Edwin Jewell and others announced the formation of the Australian Bookplate Society. The society was instrumental in promoting the art of the bookplate through establishment of the Australian Bookplate Design competition. This book has been given by the Woodford Sunday School to Edith Cassady (note the misspelling of ‘Cassady’). Edith Cassady was the daughter of William and Elizabeth who lived at Boughton on the Merri River (near Cassady’s Bridge, Caramut Road today). This property was established about 1845. The donor of the book was William Wines, a member of a pioneering family in the Woodford district. This book is of some interest as it belonged to Edith Cassady, a member of a pioneering family who lived at Boughton on the Merri River. This is a hard cover book of 344 pages. The cover is red with black border decorations and black and gold lettering. There are several full page black and white illustrations scattered throughout the book which has 23 chapters of story. The cover and pages are much water-stained. The HD Holden was introduced by GMH in 1965 and for a variety of reasons was considered the ugly duckling. The HD replaced the large selling and very popular EH (1964) model. the dramatic change in design from the square slopped EH to the sharp edged shape of the HD was met with some buyer resistance and was highly criticised by the motor writing fraternity. The unusual front guard shape, which became known as kidney cutters, which assisted with the unpopular impression, resulted in lower sales. The vehicle had both the 149 and 179 cubic inch capacity red engines with either the hydromatic or 3 speed manual was a good vehicle. The HD model also introduced the X2/ which was the first attempt by GMH to produce a performance vehicle. Our HD also has the leather seats in the premier version and this was the last model to have dealership leather seats.
