Rev. John Allen Manton (1807 - 1864) was born in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. He was appointed missionary to Australia in 1830. In 1833 he was appointed first chaplain at Port Arthur penal settlement. President of Horton College, first Secretary of the Australasian Wesleyan Conference, President of Conference in 1857. William and Eliza DALEY were married at St Mary’s Williamstown in 1862. Their children Ann was born in Williamstown in 1864 died at Melton 1933, Elizabeth was born and died in Melton in 1864 – 1949 and Frederick was born and died in Melton 1867-1868 Eliza died in Melton on the 12th July 1869 aged 33years of a ruptured womb. This image captures the moment just before the Maldon Market Building was converted into the Shire Hall and Offices. The decision to so convert it was made formally by the man who painted it in has new role as Shire Secretary.This framed oil painting on canvas depicts the Maldon Market building, in the period before it was converted to be the Maldon Shire Hall and Offices. In the rear of the scene the Courthouse can be seen, with the Maldon Contingent of the Victorian Volunteer Rifles drilling in front of it. These buildings are located in the former Government Camp area. This building on the corner of Court House Place and Main Street Bacchus Marsh was a licensed hotel since 1864. Prior to 1864 the building was in use as a saddlery business, established by Joseph Purday and Alfred Smith. In 1864, Purday and Alfred Tanner converted the shop to a hotel. Tanner, followed by his wife Ann, were licensees until 1892. The hotel signage above the door features the Prince of Wales feathers, an acknowledgement of the Prince of Wales Volunteer Light Horse Werribee unit which used the hotel for their meetings. In 1911 the single-storey hotel was demolished and a two-storey brick hotel was built. The identities of the five men and one woman in the photo are not known. The woman at the left of the group is possibly Ann Tanner who was the licensee around the time this photograph was taken. Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Following a Royal Commission in 1854, the building of a new Asylum at Kew began in 1864. It was built to replace the Yarra Bend Asylum on the Fairfield side of the Yarra River. Work started in 1864 and was completed in 1872 at a cost of ₤198,334. Operating over a period of 116 years, and often renamed to take account of public sensitivities, the ‘Kew Lunatic Asylum’ was one of the largest asylums built in Australia. ‘Willsmere’ was finally closed in December 1988 and sold by the Government of Victoria in the late 1980s.A rare and historically significant photograph of female staff of the Kew Hospital for the Insane, in front of the central wing. The photograph is one of a pair donated to the Kew Historical Society by Frances Dorothea Van Brummelen (1931-2011) in 1994. Following her graduation as a social worker, Fran Van Brummelen joined the staff of Kew Cottages in 1969, and became senior social worker there in 1971. She remained at the cottages until she retired in 1994. Earlier, In 1987, with psychiatrist Cliff Judge, she founded the Kew Cottages Historical Society becoming its president. In 2002, the pair collaborated on the book Kew Cottages: the World of Dolly Stainer, which was later commended in the Victorian Community History Awards.
