Charles Henry Bennett, born at Linton in 1871, was a son of William Garnsworthy Bennett and Susan Bennett née Williams. The cornet was owned and used by W H Nicholls, a member of the Linton Brass Band, most likely in the 1890s or early 1900s. The cornet was donated to Linton & District Historical Society in 2017 by Robyn Nicholls, of Blackburn. It is understood in the Nicholls family that Robyn's late husband, Graeme Nicholls, inherited the cornet from his great-grandfather, William Henry Nicholls (1845-1902). However it is also possible that the cornet was owned and played by Graeme's grandfather, also named William Henry Nicholls (1880-1943).Brass cornet with mouthpieces, in original dark wooden case which has red fabric lining. Instrument is approximately 30cm in length, has a 12 cm bell and three valves. A small portable sheet-music holder is also in the carrying case. The manufacturer's name "Gautrot Brevete, Paris" is imprinted on the bell, along with the inscription "Exposition Universelle de Paris, 1889, Medaille d'Or". Jane Graham Austin purchased Allotment 14, Section 1, Township of Linton in 1871. This property, a house and shop in Sussex Street next to the Shire Hall, had formerly been owned by her father, Thomas Austin, who was forced to sell it after being declared insolvent. Jane Austin mortgaged the property for £20 in 1878. When Thomas Austin left Linton in 1882, his daughter sold the property to Benjamin Dodd, who in turn sold it in 1887 to John Angus.Approximately A3-size sheet of blue paper which has been folded twice. Printed and handwritten documentation of the 'Equitable Mortgage' arrangement entered into by Jane Graham Austin with the Bank of New South Wales in December 1878. The release of the mortgage, in October 1882, is also documented. The reunion was held during Easter 1936, from 10th to 13th April. Its highlight was a visit by the Moorabbin City Band, which performed at various events including a Grand Concert on Easter Saturday. This garage was on the site of the Ball family's blacksmith's workshop. In 2017 parts of the building are still on the site, although in a very dilapidated condition.Photograph copied from original of a petrol station/mechanic's workshop. Gertrude Kathleen Barry was a music teacher, performer, and director of many musical productions in Linton and district, playing and teaching both piano and violin. She was the youngest of five daughters of Linton policeman/Clerk of Courts Denis Barry and his wife Ellen (née Quirk). The Barry family lived in a house they called "Listowel", which was in Cumberland Street, almost opposite the Catholic Church. As a pupil of the Sisters of Mercy in Ballarat, Gertrude passed the Musical Society of Victoria pianoforte examination in 1900. She became a music teacher shortly afterwards, teaching both privately and assisting in the music programme at Linton State School. She is first listed as a music teacher in music examination results published in 1906, and it is understood that she ran a private music school with her sister Dora from around this time until about 1915. The "Misses Barry" frequently performed at local concerts and fundraising activities. Gertrude moved to Ballarat in 1925, and was still listed as a music teacher in electoral records in 1972. She died in 1976. The former manse is located at 954 Linton-Carngham Road. According to the donor these image copies were used in an exhibition, and distributed at the conclusion. Shire of Grenville certificate awarded to school students who participated in victory celebrations after the end of the First World War. This certificate was awarded to Elsie Godden, a pupil at Linton State School.Colourful, illustrated certificate, shows winged angel on right hand side, and Australian flag in top left corner, with images of war and peace in lower section. Small, inscribed metal plaque nailed to wooden backing board. Plaque acknowledges that the heating service of a church was installed by Dr Agnes Donaldson in memory of her parents, Dr James Blair Donaldson Snr. and Mrs. Amelia Jane Donaldson. An egg timer attached by a loop of wire to a cardboard mount, on which has been glued a small photograph of Sussex Street, Linton. Mary Hepbuirn (or Hepburn) married Henry Francis in 1857, and they had nine children. In the 1870s they acquired land south-west of Linton, where they lived and farmed for many years. Understood to have been used in Linton c.1864. Information provided in 1993 by Russell McDonagh Bennett suggests these scales may also have been used at Dawsons Dam mine c.1907-1909.Beam scales used for weighing gold. Scales consist of two circular metal dishes, each supported by three wires suspended from a metal balance (beam), which in turn is linked to and supported by a vertical metal stand. A lever attached to the stand can be used to move the weighing dishes vertically and horizontally. The scales are mounted on a rectangular wooden box with a sliding drawer which is divided into three compartments.Maker's marks stamped on dishes, lever and stand.
