The frescos, of which fragments survive, were some of the most important murals used as elements of interior decoration in Melbourne during the Boom Period of the 1880s. These photographs were taken immediately prior to the demolition of the house, and are the best examples of the murals.Notwithstanding its grand Italianate façade, the most important aspect of Southesk (formerly ‘Ordsall’) were the murals in the front two rooms. An article in the Melbourne Argus in 1882 records that Mr Vandenbrandt and Signor Rizzi created these under the supervision of Cullis Hill. This fresco from the ceiling of the ballroom depicts ‘Night, represented by a female figure in a diaphanous garment, skirted with flowers, wafted before the approaching dawn into space illuminated by the moonlight, and peopled by the fairies, is a striking picture. Set of 3 Kitchen Canisters, DRU Holland (Diepenbrock & Reigers of Ulft, Holland), 20th century
Ulft consists of three hamlets: Ulft, Oer and De Pol. Oer is the northern part of Ulft and is called Oer because of the iron in the earth, which is called IJzeroer in Dutch. The DRU, an iron foundry, was located in Ulft. DRU moved to Duiven in 1999 and may be found at the Rijksweg A12. The Ulft site is still called "De Smeltkroes", a reference to the historic foundry, but is being converted to residential accommodation on top of a shopping centrum.Such sets of 3 canisters (coffee, tea and sugar) were commonly to be found on a shelf in Dutch kitchens. 5874 (a,b,c,d,e,f) Three (3) near-identical lidded enamelled steel cylindrical canisters, green on the outside and white on the inside. A small bakelite stand-alone coffee grinder with curved metal handle and metal grinding works. 1. On the lid: Within a circle and in relief Pe-De Dienes Reform D.R.G.M.D.R.P. Above the final inscription a small metal plate carries the words: Gesmeed maalwerk loopt op kogels - (forged grinding mechanism runs on ball bearings) 2. On the main body: Another circle with, in relief, an image of a deer head with with a cross inserted between his antlers. Thereunder the brand-name Pe De. -

These tops normally driven by small whips. Thin string was wound around from the bottom up up to the groove. Then a sharp pull on the whip would start the top spinning. It was kept going by whipping. Example of children's pastimes before the age of TV. Dutch families tended to play boardgames during the long winter nights.It was brought to Australia to continue old customsRectangular white box with black lid on which information is printed in orange. Inside box is a plastic moulded container holding the various puzzle pieces. Puzzle pieces are made from variety of materials including metal, wood and possibly plastic Some items are missing judging by the diagrams.Seven language on top of box all saying "play it anywhere". Images of the various puzzles. The manufacturer logo and name (Jumbo) all featured prominently on side of lid. "Made in Holland by Jumbo, Hausemann & Hoette nv Amsterdam" Has recommended play age of 8 and higher. On sides of lid feature multi-coloured title of the game. Ornamental container with lid (Sierbusje voor thee of koffie)
The cylindrical silver-plated container has slightly convex lid with central knob. Container and lid are decorated with scenes of country life. The decorations are in bas-relief.The initials D and E ( for Douwe Egberts) are imprinted within a rosette. Also a tag with the letters HH with 90 beside it, possibly a record of the silver-plating process. -

4161 - One of a set of 10. This mug carried the Netherlands coat of arms. The other 9 mugs depict provincial coats of arms.The Netherlands coat of arms of two lions holding a shield surmounted by a crown and depicting a lion rampant. A banner below carries the Dutch Royal Motto "Je Maintiendrai". (I shall persevere).
