John Gray was "actively associated with all movements for the benefit of neighbours and fellow citizens". [Quote from the official tribute on his death in 1909.] He was very active in the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the early 1900's. The rotunda built in the Surrey Gardens by the Progress Association in 1912 was dedicated to him. John Gray was born in 1861 in Eldorado. He died on 7 December 1909 in Surrey Hills and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M0472). He married Emma Beckett in 1888 at 'Guildford Villa' in Essex Road, the Beckett home. They are listed in both the 1903 and 1906 electoral rolls in Arundel Crescent; his occupation is given as bootmaker. The Alan Holt property register identifies this as 24 Arundel Crescent, known as 'Tumberumba'. John Gillies Waite Ellis was named after the captain of a vessel that sailed to Australia. He was a scholar at Redan State School. John Moule was President for the Association for the Blind from 1992 until 1999. Shortly after his commencement, political changes forced the realignment of government departments and expenditure, requiring a reduction in nursing home accommodation and staffing levels. With the demand increasing for services, and the need for a financially sustainable model, he oversaw the increasing amount of government support for the AFB as well as the successful centenary appeal. This photo, part 1 of a 2 photo sequence taken by John Witzig, is of of Bob McTavish riding a very large waves (15'+) at Bells Beach on Easter Sunday (April 18th) 1965. This wave is thought to be the same one described by McTavish in his book as one of the biggest, most powerful waves he had ridden, almost resulting in his drowning after being washed down past the next headland at winki pop. Bells, Easter, 1965 is considered one of the biggest days that this break has been surfed. The surfer in the photograph, Bob McTavish would go on to become one of the most influential surfer/shapers in Australian during the next decade.The extremely large waves experienced by surfers at Bells Beach on Easter Sunday 1965 is part of surfing folklore. John Leslie Shepherdson joined as a private on 31st August 1914 from Tatura, Victoria. His father lived at Birregurra, Victoria. John's military number 857. Australia declared war on Germany on the 4th August. Wounded (shot in the head) landing on the beaches at Gallipoli, 25th April 1915, John recuperated in hospital and rejoined 7th Battalion 25th July 1915. Just in time for Lone Pine where he was wounded a second time 9th August 1915. While recovering was promoted to Sergeant and sent to 7th Battalion headquarters as part of 3rd Echelon B.E.F. This unit was reinforcements and returning wounded/sick who could not go back to active service due to wounds. He remained at headquarters as a clerk until the end of the war and was promoted to Lieutenant on recommendation of Secretary of State for valuable services rendered to Australia. John returned to Australia via America (at his own expense) in 1919. The maker’s initials on the back of the patter, “A.F. & S.” are one of the marks of Alfred Fenton & Sons (& Co) of Brook Street Works (renamed Century Street in 1950’s), Hanley, Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent in the United Kingdom. The partners were Alfred Fenton, James Tunstall Fenton, Arthur Fenton and John Fenton. Other initials used are “A F & Co.” The company operated from 1887 to 1901. According to the London Gazette of January 10, 1899, the Earthenware Manufacturers “Alfred Fenton & Sons“ also had a location in Australia at the corner of Elizabeth Street and 314-316 Bourke Street Melbourne Victoria, and Bond Street, Sydney, and in New Zealand at Manse Street, Dunedin. The maker’s mark also includes the word ‘PRAHRAN’, which is an inner suburb of Melbourne. “Prahran” may have been the name of this particular pattern or even the location chosen in preference to the location ‘Melbourne’. The Melbourne address was purchased from a long established drapery business, Wright and Neil, between 1911-1914 by Sidney Myer. Myer constructed his 1914 building in on this site in Bourke Street.
