It was built in the 1950’s as a seminary for the Blessed Sacrament Fathers. Because of the poor and circuitous road access, a suspension footbridge was built across the river. Mia Mia was a cottage on the other side of the bridge on Diamond Creek at Hurstbridge. Fred and Catherine Hurst first lived here after their marriage in 1897. The newly constructed re-inforced concrete arched bridge across the Diamond Creek at Hurstbridge designed by John Monash. Eltham Shire shared the cost of the construction of the bridge with Heidelberg and Whittlesea Shires. The bridge was officially opened on 3rd November 1917. In 1920 the Hurstbridge Sawmill operated as part of a local logging industry where among other things large logs were used for bridge building and railway construction. The Wattle Valley Estate was first advertised in August 1925 as weekend building allotments by the Greater Melbourne Land and Development Company. Advertised from £28.10.0 or £60 per block. In August 1926, 30 picked allotments of 60x150 feet were put up for auction Saturday August 14, 1926 with frontages to Valley View Road and Fawkner Crescent advertised in the “Heart of the Glorious Wattle Country” and “Within 15 Minutes of the Newly Electrified Railway Station”. The Advertiser on August 13, 1926 in an article promoting the auction stated “the estate is regarded as one of the best in the district, and will be sold practically without reserve.” It is noted that an advertisement running in The Argus February 22, 1951 offered the remaining 16 blocks for sale at £12.10.0 or £200 the lot. View of the 1875 timber trestle bridge over the Yarra River reproduced from a newsprint image. Also known as Anderson's Creek (Road) Bridge A contract was accepted for William Elliot to erect a bridge over the Yarra River at Warrandyte on Anderson's Creek Road and other improvements for £1,331.6.2 - Gazette No. 143. Tuesday, November 13th 1860 - http://gazette.slv.vic.gov.au/view.cgi?year=1860&class=general&page_num=2161&state=V&classNum=G143&id=). The bridge was washed away by floods in 1863. It was replaced with a taller timber trestle structure in October 1875, designed and built by C.S. Wingrove, Shire Clerk, Engineer and Surveyor for Eltham Shire Council. A replacement for this bridge was commenced in 1955 to cope with increasing traffic and this structure was widened in 2018 to meet further traffic demands. Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957), Thursday 23 September 1875, page 7 ________________________________________ THE WARRANDYTE BRIDGE. The ceremony of formally opening the newly erected bridge over the Yarra at Ander-son's Creek was performed on Monday last, in the presence of the members of the Eltham and Bulleen shire councils whose territories it joins, and a goodly number of the residents of the district. The task was delegated to Mr. Cameron, M.L.A., who, after a few introductory remarks declared the bridge to be opened, and christened it the " Warrandyte Bridge." The party then adjourned to Grant's Hotel, where a cold collation had been prepared. The chair was taken by the president of the Eltham shire (Mr. John Bell) and the vice chair by Mr. Kent, a member of the Bulleen council. Mr Robert Williamson proposed "Success to the bridge," coupling with it the name of Mr. Cameron, to whose exertions was in the main to be attributed the erection of that structure which was an ornament to the district and would prove of great service to both sides of the river. Mr. Cameron, in responding, alluded to the great difficulties, mainly of a pecuniary nature, that had been encountered in carrying out the project, and which had only been got over by their united efforts and by the liberal spirit in which the late Commissioner of Roads had dealt with the case. The healths of the contractor and the engineer were also drunk. The bridge is a trussed timber one, resting on yellow box piles sunk into the solid rock, each pier being weighted with 50 tons of stone. The abutments consist of dry stone walls, 6ft. thick at the base, and tapering to 3ft. on the top, the face of the work having a batter of 1 to 1. The length of the bridge is 308ft., there being four openings in the centre of 66ft. each, and two at the ends of 20ft. each. The width in the clear is 9½ft., and the height from the bed of the river about 33ft. Copy of possible Rose Stereograph Co. postcard “View at Eltham, Vic.”, c.1924 looking southwest from Main Road near York Street to Bridge Street and the original 1875 bridge across what is now the Alistair Knox Park The land in the foreground was first bought from the Crown by J.M. Holloway in 1851. The land was sub-divided and called "Little Eltham". Bridge Street was created as part of the sub-division. Most of the sub-division was residential lots but the creek valley was divided into lots for small farms. Council started to buy the land for the Eltham Town park in the early 1960s. The area was used as a garbage tip and filled above the flood plain of the creek. Development of the land for a park began in the early 1970s. The house on the right was owned for many years by the Hill family until Council bought it in the early 1960s. The house was built in the 1850s or 60s. The house on the left stood on what is now the southwest corner of Susan and Bridge Streets. The Braithwaite family was associated with this house. The double line of fencing in the foreground was a continuation of York Street to the creek. The Bridge Street bridge was built in 1875 and replaced in 1958. Fernshaw was a rural township 63 km north-east of Melbourne and 10 km north-east of Healesville. Situated on the Watts River, near where a log had fallen making a convenient crossing, Fernshaw was settled in the 1860s. Postcard view of pedestrian log bridge in Kinglake National Park. The log bridge over Johnston's Creek is said to have been built to allow the timber tramline to cross the creek. The bridge was destroyed in the 1926 bushfires. The unveiling of the Eltham Obelisk War Memorial was performed by the Rev. Padre Charles Tregear, assisted by Church of England vicar, Mr Safsford on August 3, 1919. Reproduced page 99 of "Pioneers & Painters." "Beneath a lonely pine tree on the hill crest out from Eltham, where the Greensborough Road junctions with the main Melbourne Road, Eltham has erected an everlasting tribute to the memory of the fallen heroes of the district. It is an obelisk of Harcourt granite in the rough, bearing an appropriate inscription and 27 names—an unpretentious monument by the wayside, which will stand for all time silently expressing the appreciation of the living for the sacrifice of the dead. Located on what was referred to as Obelisk Corner, improvements have been been made since the unveiling in August 1919 with the provision of a stone retaining wall topped with a chain link and granite stone boundary, most likely in conjunction with improvements to the intersection into Main Road. Along with the use of the name Obelisk Corner, the Bridge Street bridge was also known as Obelisk Bridge. The Eltham Obelisk was originally located at the corner of Bridge and Main Roads in 1919. In 1943 (WW2) the local community commenced plans to establish the Eltham War Memorial, a living memorial to benefit the children as opposed to a one in stone as per the obelisk. The Eltham War Memorial Trust was established in 1945. In 1947 the Trust intended for the Obelisk to be relocated from Bridge Street and Main Road to the Garden of Remembrance which was planned as part of the Baby Health Centre which was to be the first of three buildings of the Eltham War Memorial to be built in 1951. In 1951 the Eltham RSL was invited to be represented on the Eltham War Memorial Trust. Around this time, with pending roadworks, the obelisk was relocated to the front garden of the Eltham RSL sub branch on Main Road for safe keeping. In 2007, a suggestion was proposed by Harry Gilham (President, EDHS) to John Cohen (ERSL) to claim a special site along with the historic Shillinglaw trees on the now vacant former Eltham Shire Office site adjacent to the Eltham War Memorial precinct for relocation of the obelisk. In 2010 following the financial collapse and sale of the Eltham RSL Sub-Branch property and amalgamation with the Montmorency Eltham RSL sub-branch, the location of the obelisk was again in immediate jepoardy and in conjunction with Nillumbik Shire Council, the obelisk was relocated in front of the Eltham War Memorial buildings in preparation for the Dawn Service on Anzac Day 2012.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971).
