Sergeant Neil Grant died from bullet wounds in the chest during the battle in Rensburg on 10 February 1900. Private Willson, quick to go to his aid, was killed instantly as he bent over the wounded man. He was well known in Ballarat for his military career and also as an auctioneer. He was 45 years of age, married and father of eight children. A very small number of these Gilera 100 three wheeled motorcycles were purchased by Ambulance Victoria so that paramedics could negotiate traffic in built up areas and attend patients more quickly. Unfortunately, the paramedics using these vehicles did not feel they were safe to drive and they were soon withdrawn from service and replaced by conventional BWM motorcycles. Businesses had quickly recognized the potential for advertising on blotting paper, and began customizing sheets with company marketing. James Bostock, a grazier, was a member of the Bostock family, prominent Warrnambool pastoralists and businessmen who had come from Tasmania in the mid 1840s and settled in the Warrnambool area. The chemist shop of R.F. Kennedy was established in Warrnambool in 1880 and quickly became one of the leading businesses in the town. Kennedy was a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist in Timor Street (the building still exists) and a prominent community member and a Town Councillor. He died in 1903 but the business continued to use the name of R. F. Kennedy and Co. until 1924. This docket is of some interest as it contains the names of the R.F. Kennedy chemist shop and James Bostock , a prominent Warrnambool resident. This is a cream-coloured docket issued by R.F.Kennedy & Co. to James Bostock in 1908. The printing shows a variety of styles in blue and white and the page has blue printed lines. The famous Kennedy symbol of a lighthouse is printed prominently and the name of Kennedy is contained in an ornamental banner. The sales information is printed in blue type and there is a Kennedy stamp attached to the bottom of the docket and this is slightly overlapping the page. The glass phial contained liquid ethyl chloride, little pressure being required to liquefy the gas at room temperature. By directing the nozzle downwards at the skin or mucous membrane to be analgesed, a stream of liquid squirts out, vaporising on contact, thus producing transient local temperatures of approximately -10 qc. Ether's unpleasant smell agitated patients. Ethyl chloride's pleasant odour reduced agitation. It could be used for induction and worked quickly without irritating respiratory passages. The Argus Melbourne Friday 10 July 1908 QUEENSCLIFF, Thursday. - After a series of successful experiments in dredging the eastern end of the South Channel, the suction dredge Pioneer sailed this after-noon for the Gippsland Lakes, where work awaits her. During operations in the South Channel the dredge worked on a sandy and shell bottom in depths ranging from 35ft. to 40ft. with unqualified success, performing the work much quicker and cheaper than the bucket drudge John Nimmo, which is still employed. The advent of anaesthesia posed immediate problems for the oral surgeons and dentists who were used to operating on awake patients with intact airway reflexes. Early anaesthetics were very light and often created an uncooperative patient. Dentists were quick to complain they had trouble opening the mouth quickly enough and dental props soon made an appearance. Gags and tongue depressors proliferated, all initially devised to improve surgical and anaesthetic access, not to protect the airway. Other instruments for opening the jaws included the somewhat fearsome devices known as mouth openers. Heister's mouth opener was incorporated in anaesthetic practice but was not designed for this purpose. Lorenz Heister (1983 - 1758) used his device for mouth inspection and for operations on the palate, tonsils and teeth in the pre-anaesthesia era. He was not impressed with the way it was used by others in his life time and believed that it overstretched the jaw when used inappropriately. Despite its apparent brutality, the Heister mouth gag was still advertised for sale in 1983 and its useful mechanism has been incorporated into modern surgical retractors. The A.N.A. Hall in View Street was opened in August 1894. The Sandhurst Branch was started on August 26th, 1874. In July 1874, several gentlemen met together, and when a sufficient number had given in their names and sufficient promises of support had been received, the board of directors were approached with a view to forming a branch of the association in Bendigo. On August 26, 1874, the inception took place. The building was demolished in 1971. Plaque formerly attached to the lower edge of the framed photo collage of the Building Committee of the Sandhurst Branch of the Australian Natives' Association. It lists names of men in the photos. Names printed on gold coloured paper mounted on piece of masonite, matching the position on the collage. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.George Lynch standing alongside a DD Locomotive. The DD Class locomotives entered service in 1902 as a new express passenger and mixed traffic steam locomotive class. Originally introduced on mainline express passenger services, they were quickly superseded by the much larger A class and were relegated to secondary and branch line passenger and goods service, where they gave excellent service for the next 50 years. This was a Slab Hut (Orbost Information Centre) display item. Cast iron was a suitable material for pots and pans because it heats up fairly quickly and retains the heat for some time. Soot from the fire would cover the cast iron and give the pot its black appearance. This was considered good because dark colours absorb heat more readily. The were used for cooking in a variety of situations, such as on an open fire and wood-burning stove. The early forties saw rapid growth of Bogong Village, with single and married men’s quarters, workshops, mess huts and administrative offices. The facilities necessary for communal living were quickly in place- a post office, police station, co-op store, medical centre, community hall/theatre, tennis courts and school. Bogong Primary School opened in 1941 to provide an education for the families of employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The school had up to date equipment and received glowing reports from school inspectors. It closed circa 1970.The Bogong State School was opened for the children of S.E.C.V. workers who lived in Bogong in a remote part of north east Victoria. Son of a Virginian farmer, he developed his father's earlier ideas into a viable harvesting machine capable of harvesting up to fifteen acres of wheat and other grains each day. Without it, only three acres could be cut. McCormick established a manufacturing business that quickly became one of the leading industrial companies in the United States. Louis Robert JAMES (22 September 1920-1997) Born Adelaide, South Australia Died Sydney, New South Wales Louis James worked as a draughtsman in Adelaide. Although he had no formal art training, he started painting after World War Two quickly acquiring a wide reputation in Australia and London. This backpack was manufactured in the 1960s. It was typical of backpacks used to carry in packages, small boxes and supplies by early residents of Falls Creek before any oversnow transport was available. The pack may have belonged to Julian Newton Brown as it was found outside the old Falls Creek Flats, commonly referred to as Alcatraz, where he lived for some time. The Flats were built in 1961 and quickly earned the name Alcatraz as they were only 2½ squares each so were compared to prison cells in Alcatraz. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Born in 1884 at Fryerstown, May Catherine Quick married David William Streader in 1910. The Victorian Bands' League was officially founded on the 10th of April, 1931. This new organisation quickly gained the affliations of all brass bands in Victoria and took over the control of bands from the Victorian Bands' Association. The new VBL started presenting massed bands events at the MCG and ran competitions around Victoria. This program pamphlet is a unique example of the style of massed bands events that were held at the MCG with 24 brass bands all marching into the ground and performing a number of items individually or in groups. This would have been quite a spectacle! This small program is very significant to the banding history in Victoria. It provides a wealth of information as to the bands that existed in 1933 as well as what they played, and how the VBL organised events.
