An item forming part of a collection of costumes, photographs and documents relating to the Weir family who lived in a mansion, originally named Illapa, at 84 Princess Street, Kew, from c.1917 to 1950. This historically significant collection includes items relating to both George Weir (1866-1937), his wife Edith Mary Weir (1867-1948) and their children. George Weir attained national prominence in the mining industry, becoming General Manager of the North Broken Hill Silver Mining Company in 1903 (later renamed North Broken Hill Mining Company 1905-12, and North Broken Hill Ltd 1912-1988), and subsequently President of the Mine Owners Association. He was to remain General Manager of North Broken Hill Ltd until his retirement in 1926.This garment is part of a collection of women’s clothing, owned and worn by Edith Mary Weir (nee Betteridge) - born in Clare, South Australia 1867, died Kew 1948 - and also by her daughter. As the wife and daughter of a mine manager, the collection includes representative examples of clothing worn by upper middle class Australian women in domestic circumstances, and at social and civic events. A number of the costumes from the 1920s to the 1930s are of a particularly fine quality, being both rare, representative and intact examples of Australian fashion of the period. Clothing. Women's black silk calf length skirt. Skirt has silk lining with a layer of silk fabric stitched to cover lower section of lining (52 cm). An outer layer of silk fabric falls from the waist to overlap the underlayer. The top layer has an irregular curved hem line.The inside waistband of ribbed cotton fabric (7cm) has six boned casings. The centre back opening (28 cm) overlaps at the waistband and is fastened with metal hooks and eyes and press-studs. The silk lining opening is fastened with four metal press-studs. This pair of silk split-leg drawers was handmade by Gladys Angus for her trousseau in 1929 when she married Dr. Angus. The design became popular in the mid-1800's and continued into the early 1900's. It is part of the W.R.Angus Collection and was donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the family of Doctor William Roy Angus, Surgeon and Oculist. The Collection that includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material once belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) as well as Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr Angus, up until 1969. Dr Angus was the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool.This garment is an example of the beautiful handmade clothing produced in Australian homes in the early 20th century. The W.R. Angus Collection is significant for still being located at the site it is connected with, Doctor Angus being the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool. The collection of medical instruments and other equipment is culturally significant, being an historical example of medicine from late 19th to mid-20th century. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade, founded in 1863, has been a strong participant in competitions throughout its history and was particularly successful in the 1890s and early 1900s. It has hosted many State Championships at Junior and Senior level. In the 1920s there were many significant fires in Warrnambool. These ribbons are of minor significance as they are in a poor condition and three of them have no provenance. They are however examples of ribbons used in Fire Brigade competitions in the past. These are four ribbons that come from Fire Brigade demonstrations or competitions. At least one is connected to the Warrnambool Fire Brigade. One is a buff-coloured silk label marked ‘Examiner’ in red printing, fraying at both ends. One is a red silk ribbon marked ‘Warrnambool Fire Brigade’, fraying at both ends. The reverse side of pink silk has a row of ruffled dark pink ribbon across each end (18cm above hem). The row of ruffled ribbon has a circular loop in the centre and half loop on each side edge. Along one long edge are three decorative pink rosettes of ruffled ribbon. The middle rosette joins the two sides of the scarf together 20 cm from the centre point to form a small hood section. At the centre of the scarf on this side above the hood is a 28cm tassel of pink and green silk cotton strands attached by a 4cm cord of twisted pink silk cotton.
