Embarked for Egypt 17.6.1915, embark for Gallipoli 1.8.1915, hospital with sore feet 11.10.1915, rejoin unit 21.10.1915, WIA 26.11.1915 GSW to Arm, during recovery gets himself into a bit of trouble, hospital 8.3.1916 with Influenza, rejoin unit 10.3.1916, hospital again two days later with Influenza and then classed Rhuematism, returns to Australia 11.5.1916 classed Chronic Rhuematism. Edward DOWSEY No 5526 enlisted in the AIF in October 1916 Tunnelling Coy reinforcements on 13.3.1916 age 29 years 1 month. Lieut Col R Gartside VD was killed in action at the Dardanelles,on Saturday 8th May 1915. This portrait was presented to the Harcourt State School byShire President, Mr E Pritchard After a lengthy career in the militia, Colonel Gartside served with distinction in the South African War, becoming known as the ‘Hero of Elands River’. James William Jardine, a 20 year old farm labourer of Rathscar Victoria sailed with 19th Reinforcements to the 8th Light Horse Regiment. The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. The 8th Light Horse AIF was disbanded in 1919, but soon after re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. These three badges all bear the phrase " For Our Fighting Men" and were sold to raise funds for Australian servicemen's comforts in World War One. The funds would have been used to send food and amenities parcels to those serving overseas, to provide assistance to those soldiers who had returned to Australia or were serving within Australia. The funds from the sale of these badges were directed to the Australian Comforts Fund which was an organisation formed in August 1916 from the amalgamation of the State groups formed to provide assistance to those serving in World War One. These badges are of interest as examples of those made and sold in Australia during World War One to provide comforts for Australian servicemen..1 Circular metal and enamel badge. The front features the Australian flag on a red background surrounded by a white annulus and a pale blue ring with text. There are rust marks on the surface.The reverse has a pin clip. .2 Identical to .1 but very discoloured and faded. .3 Circular metal and enamel badge. The front features a the head and shoulders of an Australian soldier in uniform with a slouch hat and a gun with bayonet fixed against a background of the Australian flag. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse.
