Trophy, NWRC Barber Cup 1935
The North Warrnambool Rifle Club was operating in Warrnambool in the 1930s. It had 132 members in 1935. A noted member was the well-known local photographer, Arthur Jordan whose father, Joseph, was a crack rifle shot and was a member of the Warrnambool Rifle Club. The Barber Centenary Cup was presumably established to commemorate the Centenary of Victoria as the cup competitions commenced in 1934 and were completed in 1935. The competitions were usually held over distances of 300, 500 and 600 yards. It is not known which member of the several Barber families in Warrnambool at the time donated the cup but G. Barber was a member of the Rifle Club in 1934-5 and winner of the Gray Centenary Cup. W. D. McDonald, the winner of the trophy, was the Captain of the C lub in 1935.This item is significant as it is connected with early 20th century Warrnambool sport (rifle shooting). It shows what sort of award was given for competition winners and reveals the popularity of rifle shooting in Warrnambool in earlier decades, with two clubs existing at that timeThis is a sports trophy cup made of electro-plated nickel silver (now very tarnished). It was a trophy named ‘The Barber Centenary Cup’ given for competitions amongst the North Warrnambool Rifle Club members during 1934-5. On cup: N.W.R.C. Tray, Apex District 2
This tray was commissioned as a perpetual trophy for the Apex District 2 (south west Victoria) public speaking competition. The names of 27 winners from 1977 to 2003 are inscribed on the tray. Apex Clubs are service clubs that provide people with the opportunity to volunteer within their community. Members are aged between 18 and 45. The first Apex Club was formed in Geelong in 1931 and Warrnambool Apex Club was the fifth club established in 1931. It went into recess in 1941 and was re-established in 1952. The club closed in 2011. This tray is of interest as an example of the awards given by local Apex Clubs and is retained because the Warrnambool Apex Club closed in 2011. This is a rectangular-shaped silver-plated tray with an etched decorative pattern, two handles attached to the base by metal screws and two side railings also attached to the tray by metal screws. The base has a brown board (mock leather?) inserted through the metal screws. The tray has the names of the winners of the trophy inscribed around the edge of the tray. The tray’s silver is slightly rusted. ‘Apex District 2 Perpetual Public Speaking Trophy Donated by Murray Kelson’ warrnambool apex club, history of warrnambool -

Goblet, Silver South Norwood Athletics, 1880
This cup was awarded in 1880 to James Dickson Junior for winning a 400 yards race. The cup was awarded by the South Norwood Athletic Club. There is a Norwood in South Australia and Scotland and a South Norwood in London. James Dickson Junior (1859-1949) was born in Warrnambool to James and Susan Dickson. His father had established a general store in Warrnambool in 1855 in partnership with John Cramond. This store, known as Cramond and Dickson, was a prominent one in Warrnambool until its closure in 1973. James Dickson managed the London branch store of Cramond and Dickson from 1870 to 1880 and James Dickson Junior lived in London during that time and went to school in Scotland. So the cup could have been won in Scotland but it is most likely from a London athletics meeting. James Dickson Junior became a senior partner in the Cramond and Dickson business and was a leading citizen in Warrnambool as a director of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory, a committeeman on the Warrnambool Hospital Board for nearly 50 years and a president of the Warrnambool Racing Club. This cup is of considerable significance as it was won by James Dickson Junior in 1880. James Dickson Junior was a prominent businessman and active community worker in Warrnambool for more than 50 years. This is a silver cup or trophy with a maker’s symbol and four other hallmarks. It is in the shape of a goblet and has the race and winner’s information etched on the side of the cup. It has some small dents.‘South Norwood Athletic Sports 12 June 1880 400 Yards Maiden Race won by J. Dickson Jnr.’cramond and dickson store, warrnambool -

This cup was awarded at a sports day held in 1937 by the Second Cavalry Division of the Victorian Light Horse regiments (The 4th/19th Light Horse Regiment was active in the Warrnambool region at that time). Eight mounted contingents from Australia served in the Boer War and the Australian Light Horse served with distinction in World War One. The Australian Light Horse, as official military units, ceased to exist in the 1940s. It is not known to whom this cup was awarded in 1937. This cup is of considerable interest as a memento of the activities of the Victorian Light Horse regiments in the 1930s, possibly in the Warrnambool district. This is a silver-plated cup on a circular Bakelite stand.
