This 1989 booklet contains lists of publications connected with Warrnambool and District and it was compiled by W. Pinson and M. Johnstone. The publications listed were ones held at the time by the Warrnambool branch of the Corangamite Regional Library Service and the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education library. The publications are listed under the headings of Community, Environment, Heritage, Industry and Tourism. Although the information in this book is well out-of-date, it may be of interest to researchers today. The publications may still be available at the Warrnambool Library or at the South West College of TAFE in Timor Street Warrnambool or at Deakin University in Warrnambool. The Acme Field Days are held each year at Allansford beginning in 1982 and continuing to the present day. This Almanac records the many various organisations, such as churches schools councils and law related information.It lists public holidays, members of Parliament as well as births and deaths natural events such as rainfall, sunrise/sunsets and moon charts. it records mail charges and coach timetables.A middle section presents a calendar for 1870 with a record of events which were deemed important since the time of settlement It lists such things as the first telegram from Melbourne to Sydney1858, Governor Bligh deposed 1808, Burke and Wills funeral 1863. At the bottom of the page is a Warrnambool Business Directory which includes J S Rowley Corio brewery, Royal Hotel , J H Rule Painter, plumber and glazier, J Brady , tinsmith and A Lanagan , Golden Boot The Warrnambool Examiner was founded by John Wilkinson and Richard Osburne in 1851. After a gap of a couple of years Richard Osburne resumed publication in October 1853 and continued until 1867. William Fairfax and Henry Laurie then leased the paper (1867 to 1872) before Richard Osburne again became the proprietor from October 1872 to April 1878 and from December 1879 to December 1880 when publication ceased. Fairfax and Laurie were the proprietors of the paper when this Almanac was published. William Fairfax was a member of the Fairfax family which was, and still is, associated with the publication of many Australian newspapers. Henry Laurie later became well-known as a Melbourne University Philosophy Professor.This single sheet of newspaper is an interesting and valuable record of Warrnambool and its people in 1870. There are names of many local people recorded and it also gives an insight into the variety of businesses and orhganisations which were established by 1870. Thomas' pharmacy operated from Fairy Street in Warrnambool, initially from 90 fairy Street on the corner of Fairy and Koroit Streets then later moving to 140 Fairy Street on the corner of Fairy and Lava Streets. Mrs W L Hobson is noted as the pharmacist in the 1970's. Olive oil in the 1970's was used primarily to moisten and cleanse dry skin.It has also been used as a laxative. This is the biography of Father John Brosnan (1919-2003) who was well-known as the Catholic Chaplain at Pentridge Prison in Melbourne for 30 years and the person who attended the hanging of Robert Ryan, the last man hanged in Victoria in 1967. Father Brosnan was born in Keilambete and spent his early years in Cudgee, attending Cudgee State School. This book is of interest because it tells the life story of Father John Brosnan who was born in the Western District and spent his early years at Cudgee, 15 kilometres from Warrnambool. Father Brosnan achieved fame as the Catholic Chaplain at Pentridge Prison and as the priest who campaigned to save Ronald Ryan from hanging and who was with Ryan when he was hanged. This is a soft cover book of 170 pages. The cover has an image of Father Brosnan in sepia tones set against a background of the front of Pentridge Prison in dark blue tonings. These booklets were produced in 1896 by the Warrnambool photographer, Joseph Jordan as a souvenir of Warrnambool with three of them being also souvenirs of the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition. Joseph Jordan, born in England, took up photography whilst on military service in India. In 1890 he set up as a professional photographer in Warrnambool and became well-known for his family portraits and official photographs of civic dignitaries in the town. He retired in 1916 and the business was continued by his son, Arthur. The Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition was held over three months in 1896-7 in the civic buildings with some temporary buildings added. 70,000 people were said to have attended over that time with concerts, operas, art and sporting competitions and many exhibits. Joseph Jordan had the exclusive rights to publish a souvenir booklet. These booklets are of prime importance because:- 1. They are invaluable pictorial records of Warrnambool and district in the late 1890s. 2. They contain valuable advertisements which give us pictorial representations and other information on businesses in Warrnambool in the late 1890s. 3. Three of them relate directly to the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition and contain an article dealing with the Exhibition. 4. They contain a written description of Warrnambool in the late 1890s. 5. They show the work of one of our most important photographers, Joseph Jordan and probably also the work of his son, Arthur. These booklets have been published in 1896 by the Warrnambool photographer, Joseph Jordan and contain 15 pages of black and white photographs of Warrnambool and district, many advertisements for local and Melbourne business and an article of the town of Warrnambool. Three of the booklets also contain information on the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition. Booklet One and Two – dark red hard cover with the title in gold and ornamental scroll work. This book is of general as well as local interest as it gives short biographies of prominent 19th century Australian men. Included in the book are people of local importance to Warrnambool and district – Dr Fleetwood, Dr Singleton, Rev. George Tait, James Stewart Butters, Stephen Henty and Dr Thomas Scott. This book is important because it has interesting and informative biographies of prominent Australian men of the 19th century but it is of greater importance to Warrnambool’s historians because of its biographies of men who were influential in Warrnambool’s history. It is also of interest that the book has the signature of Henri Worland, the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949. Worland was also a great Warrnambool historian, preserving items of historical importance, writing on local history and talking about our history for a number of years in a series of broadcasts on Warrnambool’s 3YB. It is due to him that we have ‘Australian Representative Men’ in our collection today. This is a hard cover book with a black cover and gold-coloured lettering on the spine. The pages are unnumbered. The book contains 107 biographies of well-known 19th century men in Australia, together with their portraits fronted by a piece of tissue paper. The book also has articles on the Federal Council and the Soudan Expedition. The first couple of pages are missing. The cover is a little stained and some of the pages have blotches on them. Doctor Egbert Connell worked as an Honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool General Hospital and benevolent Asylum from around 1901 and continued until his death on 4th April 1928 from pneumonia. he had a private practice at his house " Ambleside" in Koroit Street Warrnambool opposite the Baptist church. He was highly regarded as being kind and sympathetic towards his patients. His practice was subsequently bought by Dr A E Brauer another of Warrnambool's well known doctors. This glass plate accompanied a stain glass window which was once in the Warrnambool hospital. It was moved to the chapel at Flagstaff Hill. This walking stick, which is also a horse measurer, belonged to Atwell George Bendall, the well-known racing man, judge and handicapper in the Western District early in the 20th century. Born in the Caramut district, he was the manager of the ‘Green Hills’ estate at Winslow, a property owned by his father who also operated a livery and coach service at Caramut. When his father died Bendall carried on the family business until the end of the 19th century when he went to live in Warrnambool. A lover of horses, Bendall was an amateur rider of note and an owner of several racehorses. He also took a keen interest in coursing and owned and bred many successful dogs. In Warrnambool he took an interest in trotting and owned several trotters. For the last sixteen years of his life Atwell Bendall was a handicapper for most of the Western District race clubs and his keen judgment and knowledge of horses were greatly admired and appreciated. He was also a judge at agricultural shows and other horse events and this is probably where he was made use of this horse-measuring walking stick. He died in 1922. This is a most significant item as it belonged to the prominent early 20th century horse racing identity in the Western District – Atwell Bendall. It is also of general historical interest as an ingenious object – a walking stick doubling as a horse measurer. This is a mottled brown-coloured wooden walking stick, slightly tapered and with seven segments. It has a wooden knob at the top curved and indented in an acorn shape. The knob has silver coloured nails or tacks driven into the raised sections. The knob lifts out and is actually a wooden ruler with silver casing at the top of the ruler. Also at the top of the ruler, at a right angle to the ruler, is a lift-out metal piece which has a spirit level at the top end and this metal piece is used to rest on the horse to estimate its measurement in hands. There is a leather strap near the top of the walking stick for attachment to the wrist and a gold metal cap at the bottom of the stick. Bruce & McClure were manufacturers of windmills and agricultural machinery including motor engines , pumps, tanks,and appliances for supplying and conserving water.Also included was brass,iron and steel foundry works. They won 11 first prizes at the Grand national Show of 1907 and in 1914 designed and manufactured a new water boring machine which could also be used for oil and gold exploration They operated from Lava Street well into the 1940's as well as from the geelong area. This plaque is possibly from one of their machines.A tangible link to one of Warrnambool's manufacturing businesses which was innovative and an essential part of the beginnings of machine use in farms and industry in the district. This object is used to wind yarn ,typically wool from a skein or hank into a ball from which it can be worked into the required garment. The skein is placed around the four pegs on the ends of each arm and wound from this into a ball. The movable arm facilitate easier winding of the yarn. It is thought that this may have come from Fletcher Jones factory where it was probably used more to rewind cotton onto reels. Either use is possible.This item or those similar would have been a well used tool in many households before the time of woollen yarn being purchased in balls. As such it has social and historical significance as well as being useful as an item to create discussion.Square wooden base with bevelled edge and central post from which is screwed two wooden strips of wood. A shorter piece of wood is riveted to each end of these two pieces and these have dowel running upright from each end. The top section is movable and can be extended or contracted as required. This is the Eighth Reader in the series of school readers introduced in 1928 for the Education Department of Victoria and used extensively in Victorian schools in the early to mid 20th century decades. This copy was in use as a Form Two (Year 8) class set at St. Ann’s College, Warrnambool in the 1970s .This book is of general interest, being the final book in the series of school readers that were in widespread use in Victorian schools from the late 1920s to the 1950s. The book is also of interest because it was used at St. Ann’s College, Warrnambool in the 1970s and has the signatures of nine pupils who used the book at that time. St. Ann’s College, the Catholic secondary school for girls in Warrnambool in the 1970s, is now incorporated into the co-educational Catholic secondary school in Warrnambool – Emmanuel College. This is a hard cover book of 260 pages. It has a Contents page, an Acknowledgments page, reading material of prose and verse, including extracts from books of well-known authors and Notes and Explanations at the back of the book. This is a book given as a prize to Allan Scarfe in 1942 when he was in Form One at Warrnambool High School. Allan Scarfe, spelled ‘Alan’ in the book inscription, died in 2016. He was a teacher at Warrnambool High School/College for a great number of years and was an author of note. He wrote several works of non-fiction in conjunction with his wife, Wendy, and several novels, mostly crime fiction.This book is of interest because it belonged to Allan Scarfe, a resident of Warrnambool for many years, well-known as a teacher and a writer. It is also of interest as an example of the type of reading material favoured by young boys in the 1940s. This is a hard cover book of 224 pages. The cover is blue with black print on the front cover and spine and a sketch of a sailor on the spine. The dust cover is multi-coloured with sketches of scouts on the front cover and on the spine. The dust cover is ragged at the edges and torn at the bottom part of the spine. The dust cover also has lists of books published by Blackie’s Books. The book has several black and white plates scattered throughout the pages. St. Anns College had its beginnings in the arrival in May 1872 of a group of nuns from Ireland. They were the third group of Sisters of Mercy to come to Victoria. The Warrnambool nuns worked hard to establish a school and orphanage for the socially disadvantaged children of the district. They purchased Wyton from Captain Ardlie that year and also Amhurst later on. The Nazareth sisters of Ballarat took over the orphanage in the late 1880's and moved the children to Ballarat but the school continued to develop an expanding curriculum. A chapel was built in 1887 and a school wing in 1906. They survived on tuition fees and the generosity of benefactors though the early and middle part of the 20th century including a large bequest by Mrs Vera Kenna in the 1960's. Boarders were a regular part of convent life until the 1970's which is probably the source of this plate. St Ann's College was combined with St Joseph's CBC college as Emmanuel College and operates today as the largest Catholic college in the district.This has significance as it is associated with one of the longest running schools in the district and hence would have a connection to many Warrnambool people as well as district people who boarded at the college.White bowl, with green and yellow stripe around edge and emblem. The Reeves family emigrated from Dublin arriving in Geelong around 1845. The established their cordial business in Warrnambool in mid 19th century and operated well into the 20th century.The Reeves family were one of a number of drink manufacturers which operated in Warrnambool in the late 19th century and 20th century. This tapestry was funded by the Geoff and Helen Handbury Foundation. It was woven at the Australian Tapestry Workshop, South Melbourne. Newcombe and Co traded as timber merchants And iron mongers in Koroit Street in the later part of the 19th century and early 20th century. Nelson’s New Drawing Course was in use around the early part of the 20th century. The owner of this particular copy Mary Norman, was born in Ararat in July 1883. She produced her first public work in 1900 and came to Warrnambool in 1901 and worked with S. Pearce Fuller. She taught at Warrnambool Ladies’ High School at Upton in Canterbury Road and also took art classes at Fullers Art School. She left Warrnambool in 1906, going first to Echuca before returning to Ararat where she set up her studio and held her first public exhibition in 1908. She married Jesse Bail in 1922 and had one child Jessica in 1923. She died in 1962 in Ararat, aged 79. Mary Norman worked in Warrnambool, and has left a significant amount of work of scenes from around the district. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has five in its collection, Gaul’s Cave, Mermaid Cave, Seascape, Wreck of “La Bella”, Clifton Banks, Hopkins River.Dark olive green hardcover book with black scrolling and coat of arms at bottom of cover. There is evidence of the game of marbles in the ruins of Pompeii and the tombs of Egyptians as well as early American Indians. The earliest marbles were simply rounded stones which had been polished but this was refined to handmade versions made of clay, stone and glass. It was in the late 19th century that mass production began and it gives testament to the popularity of the game that the Dyke factory of Ohio could produce 1,000,000 marbles a day. It was around 1915 that the mass production of glass marbles began. The game reached the height of popularity in the 1920-1930’s. Many were prized for their designs.The game of marbles was one of the most common games played universally, from childhood hence has a strong link with people of all ages and cultures. Five marbles in glass jar. All are various sizes ranging from large yellow streaked with red and blue, black striped with white, marbled tan, clear with multi coloured streaks and bright blue. Shapes are roughly spherical. Materials range from glass to glazed and stone. Three have pontil marks either on end.The lid of the jar has Nestle vacuumed sealed for extra protection. The Winslow races were held from approximately mid-19th century to around 1946. It began as a small picnic race club in Tobin’s paddock to a splendid race course on the property, “Green Hills” owned by Mr. John O’Keefe about one mile north of the Winslow township.. The annual meetings held on New Year’s Day drew crowds of seven to eight thousand people. This photo provides a snapshot of one of the most important and well patronised events in the district.
