Book, Ballarat School of Mines Apprentices' Handbook, 1953
Apprentices' Handbook, Issued with the compliments of The Council and Staff of The Ballarat School of Mines and Industries. It contains a foreword from the Principal to apprentices. It states how they are taking the first step towards becoming a first class craftsman in their chosen field. The course is set down by the Victorian Apprenticeship Commission and consists of the practical experience obtained while on the job together with the subjects studied at this school. Page 26 gives the date the book was produced. From the diary of a service man dated January 25, 1913:- "Been filing crank pins all day. Hard to get a good job if they are much out of round, but it is the only practical way at present." That is 40 years ago and contrasts with today. Collars and box
Detachable collars enclosed in a leather box such as this one were used in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly by men in the business and clerical professions. The collars were attached by studs or buttons to a shirt. The collars were removed prior to shirt washing the shirt. The leather box was most useful for travelling. Detachable collars could still be used today particularly by clergymen. Two are named E R Twomey.This box and collars are retained as an example of vintage men's wear. It will be useful for display.A brown leather cylindrical case with a strap and buckle. It has white thread stitching around the rim and upper edge of the lid, the slot for the buckle, the rim and lower edge of the base . Inside are four detachable white winged collars for wearing with a shirt. Each has three holes, one for a button and two for a stud or for buttons at the front, two wings and a curved slot at the back.They are made of very fine cotton and linen.002215.1 J.T. As well as showing some of the scenic beauties of Gippsland, the talk and lantern slides dealt with slum conditions in South Melbourne, and showed the Methodist home at Cheltenham. Sister Gwen is a sister of Rev. E. Lechte, a former minister in the Shepparton circuit. Sisters, Francis Ellen Hurst (who married William George Gray), of Hurstbridge, Mary Ellen Hurst (who married C. E. Rankin) with their mother Catherine Hurst (nee Heffernan) of Hurstbridge and Ada Alice Hurst (1880-1910). Ada married Claude Pizzey of Diamond Creek. It is thought that this photo was produced after Ada's death and has incorporated a separate image of Ada behind the piano. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' A collection of photographs depicting numerous people. Some have been taken by studios such as Lovewell & Co, Hider, Jordan and Daniel Clarke of Warrnambool. Most of the photos are unnamed but of those that are there is a Thom Wickham, E. M. Fleming, Henry and Stanly Frisch. Belvoir drinks were marketed by Stephens Bros. They established their business in Wodonga c1938, having taken over the aerated water and drinks business previously operated by Messrs. E. Bartel and E. Clark. Bartel and Clark had purchased S. Mason Cordial Company from Samuel Mason Jr. in 1920. Samuel Mason Sr. began a bakery and aerated water company c1857. Stephens Brothers was operated by Lindsay, Donald and William Stephens. In 1947 they manufactured their own cement bricks to build a new factory in High Street, Wodonga. Over time they operated under various names including the Wodonga Cordial Company and Belvoir Wodonga Cordial Company. In 1938 their output of aerated waters was 100 dozen bottles a day but by 1948 that had doubled. In 1949 they also established a wood yard at their High Street premises to provide additional income during the slower winter months. In 1966 the company was purchased by the Tarax Ale Brewing Co. with Lindsay Stephens staying on as Company Manager.These artefacts has local significance as they are representative of a well-known Wodonga manufacturing business.2 different sized bottles for Belvoir soft drink. Both bottles feature the blue brand on one side and information related to manufacture and contents in white print on the opposite side. The larger bottle holds 26 fluid ounces and the smaller one holds 13 fluid ounces.On front: An oval shaped name "BELVOIR" surrounded by leaf design with white text "The seal of quality" above the oval and "A Flavour for every taste" beneath the name.
